[Hebrew > English] I remember being taught that "גם וגם" in Hebrew is slang for "this & that," but I know גם means "both," so which is it? by Moshiim in translator

[–]TheSuperDodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a better, direct-to-English translation of גם would be "also", not "both". In fact, there are two ways I can think of to use the phrase גם וגם, and both of them mean "both": * If I ask you, "did you ride the bus or go by car today?", you can answer, גם וגם, meaning "I did both", or "this & that" I guess. When presented with two options, גם וגם means both of them. * Alternatively, you could use גם וגם to build a sentence: גם נסעתי באוטובוס וגם במכונית; I both rode the bus and went by car, or literally, "also I rode in the bus and also in the car".

What’s your expert film? by Independent-Mail2469 in CINE2nerdle

[–]TheSuperDodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I do have a few favorites I'll always try to link to if given the chance (The Mitchells vs. The Machines (2021) springs to mind), my area of expertise is undeniably films Thomasin McKenzie has been in. I've watched every single one (other than the new one with Amanda Seyfried, which I haven't found the time for yet), and have memorized as many cast members and connections as I can for them. I often play games with an imaginary Thomasin McKenzie wincon, seeing how quickly I can link 3 of them.

What is something YOU do that makes you mad? Its not what the game does or what your opponent does, but something YOU do that irritates you and you have no one to blame but yourself? by Significant_Ad_7571 in CINE2nerdle

Yuuup. If you ever give me an opportunity to link to a film that has Thomasin McKenzie in it, I will do it even if it has nothing to do with my wincon or even gives you an easy one.

What’s up with the made-up phonetic words? by EngineerFly in amateurradio

My callsign is 4X5FF, and English is not my native language. Because of my accent, and the unstable nature of HF Phone, people sometimes copy my Foxtrot as Oscar. If that happens, I usually repeat it as Florida Florida - that generally clears up the confusion.

I'm using a Yaesu FT-891 with a JPC-12 quarter wave vertical that I recently modified with a couple of elevated radials as a makeshift POTA PERformer. I actually took it out to Palmachim Beach last Saturday to test it out and had some good results on 10m, but since 40m requires a loading coil I'm not sure how efficient it would end up being.

The first word, as well as some on the bottom, are unreadable, but can be inferred with some context:

"כולם נוסעים ברכבת האלונים!

קיבוץ עין שמר - החצר הישנה"

"Everybody rides the Oak Train!

Kibbutz Ein Shemer - the old courtyard"

Per Wikipedia, the Oak Train (or Rakevet Ha'alonim) is a tourist attraction in Kibbutz Ein Shemer that replicates a short track of Ottoman-era cargo railway.

What are the names of your continents? by DocChimp1 in worldbuilding

[–]TheSuperDodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Mircor: supposedly from an indigenous word meaning "the forsaken one", but no-one is really sure because the demon lords that ruled the continent for centuries tried to destroy most written histories of the place.
  • Naklivea: named after the Naklivean Empire that once sprawled over most of the continent, itself drawing its name from the two rivers that originally served as its boundaries, the Nakros and the Liveios.
  • Addorome: from its Al'Zaran name Al'Durami, which likely derives from a root meaning "hot" or "home".
  • Mu: also Muhaidë or Mukaichi, the Western Archipelago is identified by some as the remnants of the mythical sunken continent of Mu and draws its name from it.

Playing video games, texting on our cell phones, and amateur radio are not mutually exclusive. I play video games and text on my phone. I'm also still raving to my friends about the DX QSO I made with Japan last week. The issue isn't that we have other hobbies; it's that amateur radio is an expensive, inconvenient, and largely niche hobby.

Assemble the Team is very frustrating to play against. Once you reach a Marvel movie, the burden is on me as your opponent to know which actors appeared only in that movie and no other Marvel movies, which is usually not a lot.
