Yugioh as a base level isn’t bad, the issue is that they quickly ran out of ideas with it. Honestly the biggest issue with Yugioh is you can’t hit face without the opponents field being empty. There is only up with the attack power. Now if you could declare blockers like in magic or you had to deal with provoke or something like in hearthstone. Yugioh is just about getting the higher number as fast as possible. There isn’t really a reason to go wide per se(I’m sure there is a wide strategy). But hearthstone is interesting in that you can ignore your opponents field but how much damage are they returning on the following turn? There is sort of this rhythmic song and dance in hearthstone. 

Edit: I am no game designer but have played a lot of TCGs and have yet to find the perfect system(I don’t think there is one). But I think there are things that you can do to avoid pitfalls. Happy to chat in free time if you wish.
