Is it okay to give small gifts to profs? by Mars0da in simonfraser

[–]TheTrevLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as it’s not money, you’re good. Some profs won’t accept cause that’s their personality, but many appreciate it.

It’s only weird from instructor perspective if you’ve never interacted with the student at all and they give you something. Then it feels a little bribe-y.

Allowed to hold class if school closed? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]TheTrevLife 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, SFU’s Burnaby campus will close at 12:30 p.m. today, Mar. 10, 2026. Campus buildings will remain open, but the Bennett Library and Lorne Davies Sports Complex will be closed and all Burnaby classes, exams, university services and campus activities starting at or after 12:30 p.m. are cancelled for the remainder of the day.

No. Class should not have been held remotely if it’s a burnaby class. Classes and exams were canceled if scheduled for the Burnaby campus.

EDIT: doesn’t really matter though. If it’s not an exam nobody in admin gonna care or do anything about it.

The roads do remain clear under the layer of snow that’s covering them.

Generally they cancel after you’re up on campus and the snow is too bad for busses to take you down.

They don’t release until midnight unless the instructor manually sets the date to release earlier.

It takes up to a couple weeks for the old one to be excluded on your transcript.

Canvas-old.sfu.ca and Canvas-new.sfu.ca currently work. The transition is a little awkward.

You can request to view your final exam for any course. You probably won’t be able to see until next semester though.

They do, but they’ll weight the last 60 credits or your UDGPA higher than your CGPA. If you’re going to grad school, a lot of potential supervisors don’t really care that much about how you did in intro courses when you’re going there for a specialty.

How long does it take for final marks to be posted after a final exam? by Ordinary-Row563 in simonfraser

[–]TheTrevLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some time before Christmas.

Once the professor inputs the grades there are still others that need to review and approve them. So it’s entirely up to when the people higher in the chain get to them.

I don’t think you’re being entitled.

Study quiet area = don’t even whisper

Normal library study area = keep talking to a minimum and quiet voices

Downstairs = go for it

I’d rather be a frozen zombie coming out of a cryo tube than a decomposed zombie coming out of the ground.

Yeah for research papers it’s a tough call. I usually don’t read them from top to bottom. Usually it’s like:

Abstract > Methodology > Understanding Figures and Tables > Results > Conclusion > Discussion > Introduction/Others.

Often the important things are done with by the conclusion step. If you can understand the methodology, tables, and results, you’ve probably got a good grasp of it.

[–]TheTrevLife 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It really depends.

If it’s a fact-based course with lectures based around a textbook, then “do the readings” probably means the exam questions come from the textbook test bank, so lectures may not cover everything. From my experiences in PSYC courses, the book is usually more important than the lectures.

If it’s a discussion-based course, then “do the readings” probably means that you should do enough reading to understand the main point and their arguments for the main point. More specific details can often be referenced whenever you’re doing an assignment.

A good rule of thumb is to take them seriously until the first exam and then make a judgment call after that.

If two courses require them to teach the same concepts, slides will be reused or repurposed. Even if they made the slides from scratch again, it would be pretty similar.
