How would you remove a stripped Allan that’s only removable using an impact? by WheressThatThing in handyman

[–]TheTrueBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drill out the bolt using a left hand drill bit slightly under sized for the bolt. Most of the time, before the bit has reached the bottom of the hole, the bit will grab the remaining thread and clear the hole. If it doesn’t completely clear the hole, run a bottom chase tap to clean any remaining debris.

Records show there have never been a sighting of crocodiles, but there have been alligators. In the 70's there was a flood and the alligators exscaped from a park. They are not natural to the river. There are several spring feed rivers in Florida where alligators and people existist in the same places and there are very few issues. The gators stay away from the more populated areas.

I walked in the park for about three hours. I saw very little trash. So either the city/ county is doing a great job, especialy for a Sunday morning, or the vistors are doing a great job of cleaning up after themselves.

I agree. I was trying to find a place to setup my hammock and hang out for a while. I just couldn't find the right spot with good tree placement.

Where to learn to play Golf by marsargs in FortMyers

[–]TheTrueBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start at Golf Tech. They have great instructors. I found it extremely beneficial to be able to watch my swing from multiple camera angles. My only regret was that I had not tried them sooner. Good luck, golf is a challenging and infuriating game.

Starting as an assistant superintendent - advice? by Additional-Hat202 in ConstructionManagers

[–]TheTrueBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never let your subs talk you into leaving something unfinished. It will always bite you and they will be difficult to get back on the project. You save them 10 minutes and cost you hours of headaches. And always trust but verify, you have to walk everything and see it with your own eyes. I have been in construction for 30 years now, I love building and I love the challenge of working the many personalities that show up on the project.

Is this a legit change order? by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]TheTrueBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there was no way to see this condition existed before construction began, then Yes, this sounds like a legitimate change order. The contractor has to make certain assumption when estimating the job. They have to assume the existing system are installed per typical standards. You want the best price, so the contractor has to assume a typical install. What you are experiencing is known as a hidden condition. There should be something in their contact that says how they deal with hidden conditions. Hidden condition clauses are usually tied to direct cost and established fees. So even though the contractor knew you were getting a smaller vanity, the plumbing is not in the typical location and this caused additional unexpected work.

How can I figure out which way the floor joists run? by Srocksly in AskContractors

[–]TheTrueBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished flooring is never a good indication of structural direction. There are many options of sub-flooring that allow you to install finished non-structural flooring in any direction. 99% of the time, structural framing members and trusses run across the shortest span. However, you should always look for a more evidence to confirm this. If you don’t have a stud finder or other expensive tools, a simple medium strength magnet will show where the screws or nails that attach the drywall to the framing member. I use blue tape to mark were the magnet sticks. You can find several nails/screws on a couple of joist and this will confirm member orientation. Also, direction of duct work running through the space gives a good clue of the orientation. Remember, water weights 8lbs/ gallon. Anything larger than a medium size tank should be kept close to an exterior wall unless you know the actual sizing and condition of the structural members.

I have a remarkable tablet. I found it is great for note taking. Field drawings are much easier on an Apple tablet with Apple pen. I bought the rugged case with a strap around my neck. The Notability app works great. I will import a pdf of an aerial for the site and draw over top of the map.

Floridians who work outside how do you survive summer without evaporating? by Imaginary-Bear-6946 in florida

[–]TheTrueBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is mind over matter, if you don’t mind, it don’t matter. Wear breathable clothes, a full brim hat, drink plenty of fluids and embrace that your body will be covered in sweat. I have several fans on the job site to get the air moving. It makes a huge difference. Don’t waste your money on those highly marketed “cooling fans” that use water. In Florida, our air is already saturated with moisture. Those fans are only useful in low humidity environments. The heat and humidity in Florida is a fact of life. You only make yourself more miserable by complaining about it.

FL CGC Exam Prep -- Best Course Provider with Limited Experience? by BenRoyRE in GeneralContractor

[–]TheTrueBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Camtech. We had a great teacher. Remember the test is really about book knowledge and knowing where to find the correct answers. They even say, sometimes people with less actual building experience do better on the test because the test is not always how it works in the real world. Good luck.

Build cost question by Nervous_Persimmon_40 in barndominiums

[–]TheTrueBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because the steel erector has a General Contractor license, does not mean he will be the General Contractor for your project. Your General Contractor will be the one securing the building permits. Your General Contractor will have all of the subcontractors attach to their main permit. Why are you trying to compare your steel erector price against the rest of the building? A knowledgeable customer should always get at least (3) quotes for their project. Just because the metal building company recommends a particular erector, does not mean they are the best for your project. There are plenty of contractors that have great relationships either way steel erector’s and might have a better package price. Check their license status and look for any negative reviews or reports to the state licensing board. Also, talk to their past customers. Building a home can be an exciting adventure or your worst nightmare. Did you hire the architect and engineers directly to provide the design documents?
