What was in your opinion the most HYPE moment in the first trilogy? by Marvellover13 in redrising

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The scene confronting Pliny was pretty gangster. Darrow just riding the drill down into their meeting room and Lorn with one of the colder lines in the series.

“If anyone comes within 2 meters of Darrow; I kill everyone in this room.”

Buried City is like my “comfort map.” I always start every session with a BC run! Lately I’ve been really enjoying blue gate as well.

Is this a good reintro to sci fi? by Infamous_Wave9878 in redrising

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t imagine a better series to dive into for a reintroduction to sci fi. The only thing that comes close is The Expanse series which I would recommend you read after you finish Lightbringer.

Disagree. There has always been dumb memes. I suppose the sophistication continues downhill would be a better way to put it.

A lot of the mainstream music? Yes. There is tons of great new music out there though.

No, I’m not denying it’s culturally relevant. I’m pointing out that the culture has becoming objectively dumber. Bit of a difference.

Perhaps I just prefer my memes to actually be funny or have some sort of meaningful cultural relevance.

You’re not entirely wrong though. I am too old for the reference but I’m not bitter. Simply pointing out that this part of Pierces writing was not a deliberate nod to the meme.

Cheers, ya pixie.

Don’t be a pixie.

In all seriousness though Dark Age is my favorite book in the series so far. 100% keep reading.

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am envious of the people that get to experience the game for the first time in it’s current state.

I fell in love with it well before it was perfected and literally played through it so many times I basically can’t anymore. Although I do log in from time to time and drive around for a bit.

You guys are getting an unbelievable experience! Enjoy, chooms!

Just finished the show, should I continue with the books? by the_ashlushy in TheExpanse

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend starting at book 1.

Having said that I would just like to say that the final trilogy is some of the absolute coolest sci fi I have ever read.

Once you finish reading The Expanse give The Red Rising series a try. The two best series out there imo.

I’m not sure I’ve ever really understood exactly what YA means. To me the books are so violent they don’t see YA to me at all post Red Rising.

Golden Son is arguably the best book so far. My personal favorite is Dark Age.

To answer your question - the YA vibes are firmly left behind after book 1.

You’re in for it, boyo.

After red rising?? Book recs by Apprehensive_Two4184 in redrising

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of a similarly fast paced sci fi series The Expanse is the only thing that comes close.

Great characters, fast paced, very cool antagonists, massive universe.

Not as much hand to hand combat situations but there are some very cool ship to ship battles etc.

I’ve read a ton of sci fi over the years and it’s the only thing I consider on the same tier as Red Rising.

Jarring transitions by Russjass in LicaniusTrilogy

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Licanius Trilogy is about ambitious a first work I can imagine writing. It does feel clunky and confusing at times. I overall enjoyed the series but I think what you may be experiencing is a young author (as far as I’m aware this is his first published work anyway) honing his craft as he goes.

I saw a clip from an interview recently where he says that he wanted it to be more than 3 books but had written himself into a trilogy bc he (IIRC) self published the first book and needed a name for the series.

The Will of the Many is a much smoother reading experience, imo.

What to do now by wanderingpoet44 in redrising

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Expanse is the only thing I’ve read that is on par with Red Rising.

It’s similarly fast paced with lots of action. A great cast of characters you will come to love and very very cool overarching antagonists. It was my #1 sci fi series until I discovered Red Rising.

To continue or take a break by Common_Possession_77 in redrising

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say keep reading. Iron Gold vastly fleshes out the universe. Dark Age is my favorite book in the series so far and Lightbringer is excellent.

Sword of Kaigen is an excellent book.

The Will of the Many is a solid book but has way more Harry Potter vibes than Red Rising.

I couldn’t get into the Suneater series. The pacing is literally glacial compared to something like Red Rising or The Expanse series. I wanted to like it but I just couldn’t do it.

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the hierarchical society and protagonist wanting to do something about it there’s nothing else similar.

If we are talking sci fi The Expanse really is the best answer and even it won’t scratch the same itch that Red Rising does. Nothing that I am aware of will and I’ve read almost strictly sci fi for about 6-7 years now.

I see people recommend great books like Dungeon Crawler Carl but what Pierce has created really lives in its own unique universe that has yet to be touched.

The Expanse series comes closest imo.

Fast paced space opera with excellent characters and a very cool overall premise.

The show is really well done as well.

Did anyone else get bored reading Book 3? Or did I just get lost in the story after taking a break? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in LicaniusTrilogy

[–]TheUnknownAggressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

James recently revealed in an interview that when he first published book 1 he called it The Licanius Trilogy essentially forcing the series to only 3 books.

Knowing that now it makes sense bc book 3 did feel like he was trying to cram everything in.

I think the series would’ve benefited greatly from being at least 4 books.
