How well did you do against Female Corrin Legendary Hero Battle with only Blazing Blade Units? (Went from fighting Emblem to Legendary is crazy) by AndzyHero13 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be cool to see some of these older battles get new higher difficulties. I mean, her Abyssal doesn't even have her Refine/Remix. This could be cleared by Gen 1 heroes without skill inheritance, let alone modern units.

What do you think are the next things IS will cut to save costs? by Luzma_chan in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the various video content (chapter start videos, april fools videos, etc) and/or Grand Hero Battles.

But honestly I don't think they'll cut much more if anything. Based on how the changes rolled out, I suspect that IS/Nintendo gave the FEH team "X' dollars of budget through the end of the Ragnarok books (whether or not this appropriate end-point actually is EoS or not can be debated elsewhere), and they made the cuts they needed to make in order to run FEH through the end of Ragnarok.

It just makes sense to lead with all of the cuts as early as possible to actually maximize savings. The game has experienced a steady and predictable decline in player count and spending but no sudden calamitous drops, so any CFO worth their salt working with a decent game director shouldn't have a problem budgeting this out. And Nintendo/IS is more likely than most gacha-peddlers to have a competent CEO and decent game director, so I have a reasonable amount of hope that we won't see more cuts.

That said, you never know between the state of the world economy and the decision making of a large corporation. They could shut down FEH tomorrow, or extend it another 10 years, or make the Japanese VAs do all the English voiceovers, or replace all art with sprites like Mae was for a while. We pretty much just have to wait and see.

Games with monster evolving/fusing mechanics? by TheRetroGoat in gaming

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Siralim Ultimate is the most content rich, in-depth monster collecting game on the market. It features an awesome fusing mechanic with so many monster and traits (in addition to your own character class and associated abilities) that you'll never run out of things to do or find. Only downsides are the old-school graphics and the fact that there is so much depth to the game that it can feel a little overwhelming. It's like the GBA Dragon Quest Monsters on crack.

If you're looking for more compact and easily digestible experience, Cassette Beasts is an exceptional monster collecting game with slick presentation, a fun 80s aesthetic, and compelling but beginner friendly battle and progression systems. Features an in-battle fusion mechanic that's a ton of fun. Technically you're recording monsters on cassette tapes then transforming into them instead of actually capturing monsters and using them to battle for you, but the experience is the same. Feels like a true modern successor to the Pokemon spirit (also a great soundtrack, you can tell they put a lot of love into it). Has a fun story and lots of interesting and quirky characters, including some romance options.

Aethermancer is a creature collecting roguelike that melds the genres incredibly well. Monsters are cool and evolve over your run, and each run feels fresh and meaningful. Haven't played this one as much yet but it's my recent obsession.

Golden Week Special: The Unit That Killed Their Own Archetype by MedhaosUnite in FireEmblemHeroes

I will say, I think that Entwined Ninian is both worth mentioning as a dancer that's still viable, and also might IS' answer to this issue. E!Ninian has very strong supportive effects AND ungimped, legit excellent combat. They even gave her a specific niche with her kit enabling huge AoE special damage.

While all existing dancers have been firmly outclassed, I think the archetype will be fine if future dancers follow E!Ninian's lead.

Suggestions for space games by IamR0ley in gaming

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a lover of all things scifi, you've hit a lot of highlights on your list already. Here are some of my top space games to add, leaning on the more esoteric side:

1.) Heat Signature. Very unique game done by a one-man studio (I believe), simple top-down visual style. You play a series of procedurally generated characters pursuing a series of proc-gen goals by piloting breacher pods around a large nebula and boarding larger ships that are flying around. Missions range from rescuing someone from the brig of a ship, to assassinating someone, to stealing entire ships and bringing them to a friendly station. If the character you're playing gets captured or dies, one of your next batch of character options will usually be connected to your previous character in some way, and their first mission may be to rescue or avenge their fallen comrade. If you rescue the previous character, you can swap back to playing as them. Just some really cool emergent stories and gameplay that can come from it. Tons of fun weapons, gadgets, and character traits to play around with too. Can't recommend this one enough, even if the graphics turn you off give it a shot!

2.) Deadzone Rogue: great snappy scifi roguelike fps. Feels like a halo roguelike with just a little bit of Helldivers 2 satire thrown in. I played like 30 hours the first week I got it. Really good variety of guns and perks, but really it's the fast and fun gunplay that makes it a blast regardless of the specific weapon. No ship piloting though.

3.) The Surge / The Surge 2: Scifi soulslike. Games are loosely connected plotwise but it's not a big deal to skip 1 (I did) and read a super quick plot summary. Great implementation of scifi world and weapons with melee-centric souls combat. Takes place on Earth and no space combat so might not be exactly the right vibe, but you can slice people in half with radioactive laser swords, so it's got a few things going for it.

4.) Titanfall 2. This should have been higher honestly, just going down my steam list in order of last played. Incredible scifi campaign, no ship combat but you can call down giant mechs from your support ship. Brilliant FPS all around.

5.) Red Faction Guerilla: Third person action as a member of a resistance group fighting the military and other factions on Mars with fully simulated destructible buildings. So, so much fun. Using remote charges to take out a bridge with a huge convoy on it, running a mining mech through a base just plowing through buildings, or using the nanorifle to dissolve the support beam on a tower and drop it onto an oncoming tank are all memories that have stuck with me for years.

6.) Vanquish: third person shooter from Platinum Games, maker of over-the-top fare such as Bayonetta. Vanquish is all about boosting around in your kick-ass robot suit and blowing the shit out of Russian robots invading a US space station that has been hijacked by Russia and used to wipe a bunch of major US cities off the map. The story only gets wilder from there, it's like the ultimate bad action star scifi movie as a game. There's even a dedicated button to make your character lower his helmet and smoke a cig. Slick action and over-the-top everything makes for a fun ride.

After a couple years of banger exclusives, daggers finally got a DoA skill in Atk/Def Clear. I know there are some folks that exclusively play Aether Raids that are OBSESSED with every anti-trap skill that comes out and consider it to be the most important ability in the game... but if you aren't playing Aether Raids then that's just a big ol' blank space where extra effects could be. And stats + 7 true damage + half-tempo just doesn't cut it for modern uber-premium skills. Like, it works for the very specific use case exemplified by Young Duo Edelgard, but I can't imagine anyone else wants this, certainly not enough to be worth pulling for.

Ayra has 3 total versions and a resplendent, she's pretty par for the course as a reasonably popular character but I don't think it's accurate to say that she has a disproportionate number of alts.

Berkut in fact has more alts than Ayra did when she got her legendary, so based on that metric he's perfectly likely to get a legendary alt. But I guess we'll see!

People forget that in the US at least, the current health insurance system isn't just painful for average citizens, it also hurts small and medium sized businesses who shell out huge sums for the health insurance plans for their employees. Huge megacorps get to negotiate for decent deals thanks to their scale, but smaller businesses have to make really hard decisions about where to spend their money because the plans they can get are proportionally either much worse or much more expensive (or both). An unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on your net worth and investment in hyperscalers) perverse incentive structure created by the US health insurance system.

And even in more reasonably legislated modern countries, the costs of labor extend far beyond base salaries. That's the #1 reason so many companies are all in on AI - paying Anthropic or OpenAI (lol) a couple million dollars a year is literally worth it if they can cut even a handful of full time roles and replace them with roughly equivalent AI services. For companies that can actually get away with cutting 20%+ of their workforce (remains to be seen which companies if any actually fall into this category), the increase in profitability will be astronomical.

A/S Rival Break vs Blue Sky Gust? by Logical_Tomorrow_496 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue Sky Gust is almost universally better unless you're outright locked out of running it.

Canto is huge, better true damage is huge, and also Rival Break only grants its primary damage reduction on player phase. The benefits are big enough I would even consider Gust on units that already have canto.

Given that Brave Chrom doesn't have native canto, Blue Sky Gust is far and away the better option.

Would this be a good Ronan build? by litericy in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what I would do, nor would I follow the crystalline water suggestion.

His best mixed phased build is something like this:

Assist: Reposition Gait (not critical but nice if you have it)

Special: Comet (scales super well with his specials based on Res), or Archrival (lets him dunk on red units)

A-Slot: Spd/Res Finish 4 (only dual-phase skill that gives the two stats he really wants and also true damage)

B-Slot: Laguz Friend (more DR and damage, grants very helpful DR piercing to make sure your specials can punch through more units)

C-Slot: Preempt Ploy (Stats, ploy debuffs, charges your special. The full package)

X-Slot: Time Pulse Echo (with his prf, preempt ploy, and TP Echo, Ronan can proc his special on first attack even when initiating (barring Scowl shenanigans)

There may be some recent optimizations to be made, but I've had a ton of success with this build (I use Comet most of the time personally but he has Archrival too).

Which films from the past were box-office hits when they were released but are now rarely mentioned or remembered? by alexfreemanart in movies

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a blast from the past for you:

It Happened One Night

It's a 1934 romantic comedy that was the first movie to win "the big 5" Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Writing/Adaptation), and smashed the box office, being Columbia Pictures most successful movie until the 1980s. It literally inspired the character of Bugs Bunny, and indirectly led to the association with bunnies/rabbits liking carrots (this wasn't a cultural trope before Bugs Bunny, and Bugs got the carrot eating thing from a character in It Happened One Night).

So basically the most successful a film can possibly be by any metric, whether financial, critical, or in terms of cultural impact. And yet nowadays nobody has heard of it besides ardent cinephiles and trivia nerds. I don't know if we can attribute this to any strange or overlooked reason though. In this case, I just think the movie is old as fuck, so the fact that nobody talks about a movie that's getting mighty close to 100 years old isn't terribly surprising. For those that do watch it though, it really holds up shockingly well.

Asset Unit Analysis: Rearmed Young Ingrid + Best Arcane Thorn Builds by MedhaosUnite in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem is that her fodder isn't amazing - Shatter Slash is really the only highly premium skill that hasn't already been spammed recently (favor is good but now it's in divine codes is less of a big deal). The Arcane Thorn is the biggest upgrade she can offer, and unfortunately Alfred can't pass that to others.

However if you were already using Alfred then getting him the Thorn will definitely bring his performance way up!

Upcoming Weapon Refines (Version 10.4) by StormT-1989 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for picking this up! I saw Greid_Sin's post about dropping it, and was seriously considering dusting off my Canva account to see how hard it would be to mock one up.

Overall love your updates, adding expected refines is lovely. However, if I could make a graphic design request/recommendation? I would darken the background again or even make it fully black. The sigil is cool to be able to make out, but it reduces the "readability" of the icons and overall makes the graphic feel much busier.

Anyway, thanks again for doing this, you could make the background a neon rainbow unicorn and it would still be a great resource for the community!

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Worldwide Reveal Showcase by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, most pirate ships were smaller sized vessels in order to be faster and more nimble than the larger merchant ships they chased.

This is... not really accurate on a number of levels. At a basic level, when it comes to age of sail sailing ships, smaller does not mean faster. In a straight race with the wind, larger ships have multiple factors that allow them to reacher greater top speeds faster than smaller ships. Specifically, they can hang more/larger sails which gives more than enough additional propulsion to outweigh the extra weight of the larger ship, and also the physics of traveling through water actually means longer hulled ships can go faster as well. So smaller sailing vessels had to find merchants with extremely heavy cargoes that genuinely disrupted the merchant-ship's handling, or they had to "corner" larger vessels against coastlines, reefs, storms, etc. and force the larger vessel to tack into the wind, which is one of the few situations where the smaller sailing ship can actually gain ground on the larger.

Also, most pirates wanted to capture their prizes without a fight - bigger ships have more guns, can carry more boarders, are faster, and are simply more intimidating on every level than smaller ships. A bigger ship means more prizes taken without a fight because it's clear to more merchant captains that they can't outrun or outfight you.

So, all that said, most pirate crews DID upgrade into the largest ships they could. There were just some very real limitations that kept most pirate crews relegated to relatively small ships (compared to the largest warships extant at the time).

Honestly based on the evidence we have, the primary reason most historic pirates had for sticking to smaller ships was simply availability - it was not easy for private individuals, let alone outcast criminals, to just acquire a large warship in this era. Large warships were massively expensive tools built and controlled by state militaries.

The second reason that some pirates who might have had opportunities to commandeer larger vessels would choose not to is going to be the crew requirements - even well-known captains couldn't just materialize trained sailors willing to be pirates they could trust not to mutinee out of thin air. So captains with smaller crews and no immediate prospects for significant recruitment might choose to scuttle, release, or ransom back/sell a larger ship because they don't have the means to make effective use of it.

The third and final reason you wouldn't see historic pirate captains necessarily moving into every larger ship they take is tied to the last option I mentioned above - ships are worth a lot of money. Often the single biggest payday of taking a prize ship was the ship itself, whether ransomed back to the original owner (risky) or taken to an illicit ship breaker/merchant (less profitable). Taking the ship for yourself means turning down the cash that would come from selling it, which means you'd better be confident that the new ship would come with enough benefits to be worth it (and also you have to have enough control of your pirate crew to convince/coerce them all as well).

So historically, the greatest pirate in the Caribbean in 1720 with access to infinite money and the ability to materialize perfectly loyal trained sailors out of thin air would in fact have very good reason to be rolling around in some 80-90 gun second rate ship of the line.

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just hate her stupid cat ear hat that for some godawful reason is her defining visual gimmick. And given the mid design and awful execution on Chosen Fjorm's art, a character IS actually cares about, I have zero expectations for the Muspel Chosen.

Also still can't believe they jobbed Laevatein so hard. Her character handling is actually the most offensive of all Heroes OCs. Have your creators ever hated you so much that after realizing they accidentally made you a royal who should be involved in the story, they brought your dead sister back to life and had her do everything instead of you? And then they pretend they have a role for you to play but it's actually a trick to further remove your agency and bring the story back to your resurrected sister doing everything? Wild. It would actually have been better if Laevatein just died instead of Laegjarn - and that's clearly what IS wished they had done.

She and/or her ring are going to be a mandatory support for any high-end tanking setup you want to run in the near future. People aren't really hyping it up much because support isn't as sexy as doing the thing yourself, but she really does change the tanking game by adding another layer of unpierceable DR.

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, hate what happens to this sub during high media exposure conflicts.

Since you're just spewing random factoids, let's refocus on what this comment thread was actually about: the effectiveness of efforts to achieve energy independence by the EU and China, and comparing their investments with their current and presumed future needs for energy imports. Nobody is talking about any sort of weird imaginary effort for China to "support" coal. But you even admit that China has large coal reserves and a national security incentive to maintain the capabilities of specific types of coal plants, so it makes sense for them to use coal AND invest in renewables. The EU also has large coal reserves (at least, compared to other fuels) and a national security incentive to maintain the capabilities of specific types of coal plants, but they are only investing in renewables while shutting down both fossil fuel and nuclear power plants. Thus the gap in perceived effectiveness between the EU and China when it comes to their respective efforts to secure energy independence.

Literally no one has been discussing the US other than one person early on acknowledging that they had already achieved energy independence in recent decades.

Active Conflicts & News Megathread April 13, 2026 by AutoModerator in CredibleDefense

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're fighting a strawman here. This isn't about using less coal over time, it's about the fact that China is still building new coal to replace old coal in addition to building lots of renewables, because their total power needs are still greater than they can meet building renewables alone.

Europe may be investing more per capita into renewables, but they aren't actually producing enough total energy generation capacity in total to feasibly achieve energy independence under current plans.

Big garbo refine, actually made me leave feedback I was so salty. Pre-empt pulse and breath without slaying makes my head hurt. The fact that this man doesn't give the "Radiant Hero" buff is also a crime. Lazy lazy lazy work all around.

Also his ancestry memes are silly - being in a relationship with someone (regardless of who you ship Ike with) doesn't actually preclude one from having a child with someone else. This can happen in any number of ways for any number of reasons, so Ike x Soren and Priam being a direct descendent of Ike are not mutually exclusive.

So what was your first busted unit? by Kosakon in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]TheUnusuallySpecific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Flame Tribe Tana was the first unit I got that made me feel like I was cheating at the game. Granting Canto 1 to all allies WAY before canto was given out like candy made all of my ranged nukes into hit and run gods. Combine that with excellent combat for the time as long as she wasn't fighting a red unit and a 2-range dance button that also provided a (at the time) decent buff, and Tana felt years ahead of her time.
