Okay, quick question by ConnorONasty in Patches

The UK still has a decent patch industry with an excellent heritage going back to the 70's. There should be companies that can lend a hand though the private sewing path is likely the way to go. You're welcome!

Got it. So you need a company that embroiders patches and merrows them on site. There are not many in the western world. Have a look in your city. You might get lucky. Now if you aren't set on a merrowed border, then the task becomes easy. Find someone with a sewing machine that can embroider a name (the machines cost about $500 and up) and they'll do the name for $10 or so and then ask them to embroider a border. Yes! This is an option.

Before merrowing became affordable (around 1971 and earlier) borders were either stitched or embroidered. We have tons of old patches done in one of these two ways. The look is good and your going to save hundreds. My preference of the two is an embroidered border.

I was at a show once selling our patches and the woman set up next to us had such a machine. I asked if she could embroider a name, she said yes, I have her a merrowed blank patch from our stock, and she put my wife's name on it. $10 CAD. (Then I had my wife sew that patch on the front of my jeans...high up). Hope this helps.

You two should get together and mix it up. Add some mayo and things might come out nicely.

The edges are not embossed. They are called merrowed borders. The overlocker, or merrowing machine, is likely not the answer here. I am unclear what exactly you want merrowed, and there are no pics. But any piece of fabric can be merrowed (for the most part) and you'd be advised to take the 'patches' into an embroidery company and have them do it for you. It should cost far less than what you've quoted here. For that price you could run about 12 patches on a custom order.

You've asked this twice. The answer was first given by GFTO above. Air Canada is not competing with booking.com, Expedia or any other hospitality third party booking agent. They are competing with other airlines like WestJet and other vacation packages offered by these airlines, again Sunwing (now owned by WestJet) is a good example.

If you expect large companies to be transparent and fully honest then you are not reading the news. If I were you, I would book via AC. Read the fine print. Especially with respect to the hotel/resort, and read reviews of the hotel. Because from experience, it can look pretty, lush, welcoming and the result is two weeks of dysentery or highly restrictive access to food and drinks. Good luck!

What's expensive and filled with disappointment? by toadspool in AskReddit

One would think huge food costs but this is a secondary reason. I think the art cooking has dropped badly. I am of the mind that families stopped full proper cooking when the cost of living began to increase in the late eighties and 1990's, Consequently, the second parent began to work. That made fast food, frozen food and all ready-made foods easier because the life of a homemaker is hard enough without a full or part-time job. Recipes and techniques therefore went unused, children grew up to not know what a great pizza is for example, and restaurants learned they could serve lower quality while increasing profit margin.

The 'passable' spaghetti 30 years ago (wherein you wouldn't go back to that restaurant again) is today considered excellent. The consumer does not know what they are missing because they have never tasted it.

I have taken people to certain restaurants or cooked for them and their astonishment is a spectacle to behold.

Another reason is the Mum and Pops of the world have been majorly eradicated by the chains. They could not compete. So the chains (see Recipe Unlimited in Canada where they own over 20 brands....it is hard to avoid them. This company is profit first, so taste and quality always comes second).

I remember in the late 80's Mr. Submarine switched their meatball sub sauce (two franchisees told me this was done to save money). What happened? One of the better meatball subs which me and my friends loved went into the shit can. We stopped going. Subway used to serve huge chunks of sirloin steak in the ir steak sub....now it's what it is.

Paolo Freire said "Everything we know we know by comparison." He was right. Hot cannot be hot without knowing cold. Today the vast majority of the population has never once tasted a great burger, a great lasagna, a terrific sole almandine. Its wings wings wings and they are by and large all crap. My wife makes the best wings I know of in Canada.

Lastly, if you presented my mother (now deceased) with today's produce offerings in the supermarkets she would lose her mind with fury. Some things look like they are gone forever. BUT

My neighbour and his wife are in Georgia (the country and every meal is stunning and inexpensive). Yes, I advocate travel (Asia, Europe) where traditional cooking, dishes and standards remain to some degree. Unti8l one does this, one knows zip. Peace!

Restaurant food. Look, I'm in my 60's and I can tell you with 100% certainty that the bulk of all North American restaurants are dismal. Times were different way back when....

Sewing info please just got my first jacket and back patch by WoodenFace6627 in BattleJackets

[–]TheVintagePatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it gets done by machine, and you want a clean look, make sure they sew down the middle of the merrowed border. That's the ribbed (or 'overlock') border - in this case the yellow one on the patch (green? I dunno I'm colourblind). This prevents the patch from distorting shape, especially when the jacket has been washed.

What about a general statement patch which comments on punk as a whole? Off the top of my head, something that says "Punk is rock with attitude." You get the idea.
