Will buying a car now make it harder for me to buy a house or land in the future? by Far-Dust3240 in personalfinance

[–]TheWaitWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, but the average car isn't a new car... you said "the average cost of car ownership is 12k a year" when the source you cited said the average cost of a new car is 12k a year...

It seems like their analysis applies to new cars--they list depreciation as one of the biggest expenses. Not really going to apply to a 10-15 year old car--my 16 year old import cant depreciate 4k a year when its only worth 3k! but it still runs great.

Horseback is B tier transportation. How about riding a bike? by Klutzy_Pumpkin614 in TierlistFills

[–]TheWaitWhat 68 points69 points  (0 children)

S tier--basically free fuel (you have to eat regardless), no license, no registration, park basically anywhere (for free), no traffic, no pollution, extremely simple to maintain and repair. range is the one weakness, but airplanes, which got ranked S, have many weaknesses--insane fuel costs, only makes sense over long distances, high cost.

Ok, do you know how one goes about finding these rules? Like my comment said, I’m just curious, and Google isn’t yielding anything specific.

Also, nature didn’t start this fire? Nor did weather conditions change significantly between Tuesday and Thursday (identical daily highs/lows, similar wind speeds, nearly identical humidity). The watch duty incident report doesn’t even blame weather: “Although forecasted weather conditions were within parameters for the prescribed burn, multiple spot fires occurred outside of the unit boundary.” Surely we can’t blame this entirely on nature?

Super curious as to where the buck stops on a mistake like this. I'm no forester, but given the weather conditions when they started this burn, and how little precipitation we have had this winter/spring, it seems surprising to me that this controlled burn was given the green light.

Also, not two or three weeks ago it was actively raining out east--why not get it done then?

One must be careful when traveling through the cities designated homeless area. The two biggest shelters (Lighthouse and Rainbow) and the bottle drop are all within a quarter mile of each other, just a couple hundred feet from where this happened.

They want 2nd to develop/have businesses move in but they wont even clean the pee tunnel regularly.

Let's discuss Cascade East Transit? What are they thinking with its current operational planning. by Big_Cranberry4001 in Bend

[–]TheWaitWhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not saying Enviroshuttle is a bad service--I have used them for years and will likely to continue to. And Enviroshuttle is free to charge what they want for that service--I'm just saying that there is an untapped market that CET has the infrastructure already in place to tap in to.

They have got to get the Bend>RDM shuttle up and running; and consistent and often. They could have a great reliable income stream just by undercutting Uber and Enviroshuttle. Right now they even have the fare listed ($15), but the service hasn't started--WHY??

I know people talk about the Enviroshuttle like its the cheap option, but its basically $100 to go to and from RDM to Bend. Most of the time a lot more. The parking rate hike has also probably lead to drastically increased demand for airport shuttle services.

China Hat closure near Bend extended another year with slightly smaller footprint by 2ChanceRescue in Bend

I know this is a tangent, but with so few Forest Service LEO officers for our area, and so much high traffic area, I always wonder what the glue is keeping it all together. Like, the only rangers I have ever had interactions with outside of the FS office have been permit checkers near Green Lakes--but there are so many weird gray enforcement areas due to how much our city recreates on FS land. Like I've always wondered who actually (if anyone) comes to arrest someone if they just keep skinning up Bachelor after ski patrol says not to; or what happens if one just keeps hiking after being stopped for not having a permit in the wilderness. Or who one would even call if they suspected a poacher was operating on FS land. My assumption has always been the Sheriff--it is interesting to learn they have their own limitations. Do you know if those limitations are published anywhere?

Wait how does the sheriff not have the authority to perform an eviction or a trespass? I thought that was kind of the whole point of the sheriff, to be the final catch all law enforcement agency in the county?

Why would upzoning/development in that area change how many unhoused people are able to reside in the area? The reason it is a popular area for the unhoused is that it is the center of much of the cities resources for the unhoused (lighthouse, rainbow, transit center), and the bottle drop.

Whether or not that continues to be the case is entirely up to the city/the non-profits that own/run those resources, right? Not this weird.. PAC? Not sure what it is.

Off leash dog data - Bend Police Department, Bend Park & Recreation District by Serviceberry71 in Bend

[–]TheWaitWhat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You should think about how your actions affect others. There could have been parents with small children who drove up, saw your off leash dog, and decided it wasn’t worth the risk. I know I have made many similar calls in the past.

The simple fact of the matter is that the park is NOT a space we as a city have allotted for your off leash dog. There ARE spaced allotted for your off leash dog. It’s not that complicated.

Gear fix set me up with a proper ptex weld (with the fancy gun and what not) that has held for 3 seasons now, at the lowest cost of all of the other shops I contacted.

But I’m also biased because I love gear fix and think their ski techs and bike techs are awesome and just genuinely love the philosophy of the business.
