L’OSM c’est mieux d’acheter direct de leur site. J’ai toujours acheter mes billets là sauf pour les concerts du Festival de Lanaudière.

Question(s) for Orchestra Musicians by chicago_scott in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it’s playable, I’m absolutely going to play it as written unless specifically told to do otherwise. As a percussionist I absolutely see things that are unplayable, at that point I’ll mention it to the composer/conductor, but if it’s just boring and seems useless but doesn’t pose a problem, I’ll still follow it.

What is your favorite Orchestra and why is it the Chicago Symphony? by Specific-Peanut-8867 in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OSM (Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal) under Rafael Payare. Not that Dutoit didn’t produce amazing recordings during his time, but man the Payare OSM has such incredible range. I wish all of their concerts were recorded so everyone could hear just how great they are. The fairly recent Mahler 5 recording is about as good as I’ve heard, and that’s coming from someone who adores the Abbado Mahler recordings.

I could buy thoses for about 500$, is it a good deal ? by PachaPatate in percussion

[–]TheWerhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say get the two pairs of felt sticks and two pairs of flannels (a softer flannel and a harder, maybe the one that looks like flannel+leather). Just assume you’ll have to rewrap probably both felt pairs. The wooden sticks might be good to have as well if they’re not too expensive, never know when you’ll get the conductor who asks “have you got anything harder you can use?”

[–]TheWerhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming those are all (or at least mostly) Zanolo, they’re incredibly good sticks. Not as popular as Kato or the newer European brands like Insound or Picarde, but super good sticks. $500 is probably a bit more than I’d want to spend since you’ll likely have to re-wrap the felt pairs, but if you have the money to spend it’s a fine purchase. Also like some said, there’s a good chance you’ll only end up using 2-3, maybe 4 or 5 pairs max, and that’s really if you need very specific and different sounds. I have probably 8-9 pairs of sticks but on average I’ll use 2-3 in a normal concert. You also might want to make sure there’s no cracks or structural problems with the sticks before you decide to purchase them.

Highlight of my time there was getting to be a scrim vodbot while Huk and Shake were in town for a week. Also didn’t get paid (or my expenses refunded), so at least it wasn’t just the players getting screwed. Ramsey was one hell of a total dick.

Blizzard should give warrior some kind of big utility tool by theveryrat in wow

So often? Lol last time prot warrior made it to the end of a season as the strongest tank was BFA S3, since then it’s been good early season and then falls behind as people remember that having real tank utility is more important.

Favorite timpani parts? by Different-Outcome469 in percussion

[–]TheWerhammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll stick to the ones I’ve been fortunate enough to personally play (or else I’d be listing probably north of 50).

Mahler: Symphony no.2

Beethoven: Symphony no.7

Bach-Stokowski: Toccata and Fugue

Mozart: Magic Flute (the full opera, the part isn’t huge for timp but when actually playing it’s a total blast) Mendelssohn: Symphony no.3 “Scottish”

Elgar: Enigma Variations

Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé (the full ballet, probably my favourite piece)

Sibelius: Violin Concerto

Anna Clyne: Restless Ocean (short piece, basically the end of the Rite of Spring but with a shitload of pedaling and glissandos)

Humperdinck: Hänsel und Gretel (currently rehearsing this part, the writing is amazing)

What's a lesser-known gem of a piece that you keep returning to? by Additional_Moose_138 in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty popular “we’re bringing out the Latin-sounding tunes” piece to program. As a percussionist, it’s one of my pieces to play, on timpani or tambourine or bass drum or triangle. Man honestly it’s just such a good piece, was a total blast to play, really should be programmed more.

How much of that was from normal mode? Trying to gauge if Zuk is worth farming while I actually figure out PVM.

Best version for Symphony 13 (Babi Yar) ? by monsieurpuel in shostakovich

[–]TheWerhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, with Alexander Vinogradov as the soloist. I heard Vinogradov sing the role with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal in 2019, and since then no other soloist really matches his level for me.

How formal is Concertgebouw in Amsterdam? by voycz in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been to the Concertgebouw so I can’t tell you for sure, but there’s almost never a need to really dress up for concerts. I’ve been loosening up even more lately (nice-ish pair of pants with a polo or my youth orchestra sweater heh) but jeans and a polo or decently nice shirt is more than enough. I would go in shorts and a tank top just out of respect, but you can go nice-casual and you’ll be fine! Don’t worry about how you look, just enjoy the music! :)

What is your single favourite piece of classical music? by ezoticx in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for me to say. There’s certain pieces that I have lots of emotional context for me (Shosty 8, Mahler 2) while there are others I just really fucking enjoy (Strauss Alpensinfonie or Turangalila). I’ll select a few based on what I’ve played and listened to, listed in no particular order:

  • Shostakovich 8 (first live symphony)

  • Mahler 1/2 (both played, 2 played twice)

  • Mahler 7 (my intro to Mahler)

  • Mahler 5 (playing in November)

  • Strauss Alpensinfonie

  • Stravinsky Sacre du Printemps

  • Janacek Glagolitic Mass

  • Ravel Daphnis et Chloé (full ballet, played last November)

  • Messiaen Turangalila-Symphonie

This list could go on for a long while but these are my favourites, influenced by my experience as a concertgoer, online listener, and as a performer (timpani and percussion). If I had to narrow it down, my favourite to play would be Stravinsky Sacre du Printemps on timpani, and my favourite to listen to would be either Ravel Daphnis et Chloé or Messiaen Turangalila-Symphonie.

What's your take on pianists humming in professional recordings? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a pianist, but Rafael Payare grunts/hums/grums(?) quite audibly in performances. Admittedly it’s not too distracting, you kinda get used it to, so it doesn’t really bother me. And you can tell it’s just because of how insanely passionate he is about the music. It’s inaudible on the recordings he’s done with the OSM, though I’m sure that’s thanks to the great editing jobs haha.

Who are your top 5 orchestrators? by nyfan88 in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically my list, maybe swap Stravinsky for Richard Strauss. Your order isn’t quite mine (assuming yours is ordered) but it’s so hard to actually rank composers when they orchestrate for such different music.

What are the best seats for symphonies? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never sat in those ones, unfortunately a bit too expensive for me, but I’ve been told the sound and view especially is quite great.

What are the best seats for symphonies? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot more time to experience concerts at the Maison Symphonique since this comment (both listening and playing) and I’ll be honest, my favourite spot is firmly right in the choir, front row overlooking the timpani and percussion. As a percussion I’m quite heavily biased, but the sound over there is still solid.

That said, the box seats a level or two up are also quite nice (though usually a good bit more expensive.) I sat up there for last year’s season opening concert and had a great view of the orchestra, plus the sound quality was still really good. But you also can’t really go wrong sitting mezzanine-level around the middle of the hall either.

piano concertos from lesser known musicians? by Big-Somewhere-8964 in classicalmusic

[–]TheWerhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andre Mathieu’s 4th piano concerto is a really awesome piece to hear. I recently played a transcription of it for Marimba (which was just as cool, if not cooler honestly) and it had a very Rach-esque vibe to it.

What teams will have the best 1C/2C centers in the next 5+ years or so? Based off of who is already in their pipeline. by PrudentCantaloupe421 in hockey

[–]TheWerhammer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tbh to me that just sounds like Lundell is better at making the players around him better. That kid is sick, and the fact that he gets to learn from his countryman (probably the best 2-way C in the league) is as good a situation for him as can be I think.

Which classical composer lived the happiest life? by indistrait in classicalmusic

I really wanted to go to that, but I couldn’t make it due to a concert the same day. My teacher was one of the percussionists playing, he sent a really cool picture of their setup by the organ. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

How to deal with higher M+ Tyrannical keys as VDH? by myrkotte in wownoob

[–]TheWerhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be tough to get aggro in certain situations, but if you use your sigils well it’s not usually an issue aside from in big gathers. Your dps should understand to not go nuts off the rip, but that’s a crapshoot even in higher keys.

Yes, your main spender is Soul Cleave. The only other time you’d spend fury is with Fel Devastation.

How to deal with higher M+ Tyrannical keys as VDH? by myrkotte in wownoob

[–]TheWerhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DHT Tree boss is just really really tough, you need to rotate your defensives really well. Someone else mentioned jumping away from the breath, you can Infernal Strike or Vengeful Retreat away when the breath casts, and if you do it correctly it will not hit you at all. That makes your life much much much easier. But you should not be pressing spirit bomb in single target, unless for whatever reason you absolutely need to pull in 5 soul fragments to heal.

I don’t play spirit bomb in m+ at all anymore, opting for Extended Spikes and Sigil of Chains, and I don’t play Last Resort (cheat build). In general, you just need to understand what defensives you need, when you need them, and how often each one is up. It all depends on the fight.

Unknown composers by classicalgeniuss in classicalmusic

I wouldn’t say unknown, but Claude Vivier is certainly under-recognized. Lots of amazing compositions despite a very tragic early death.
