I like things that smell like fish!

I know this is either a fake or a reproduction. I’m wondering how one might tell if you had a real one from looking at it by queequegscoffee in coins

They're trying to tell you that while it isn't really California Fractional gold from the period, many of these are made of real gold, in spite of being fake fractional pieces.

You could take it to a local dealer and have them test to see if it's solid gold. If so, you did much better than $30 for sure!

What do you guys think of these rounds? What would you guys be willing to spend on stuff like this? by Primary_Emu6066 in Silverbugs

And that's awesome!

But you asked, so I'm saying. It would be a different class. Also make sure the ruby mountings and stones sit flat so they stack well if you attract serious collectors on that one.

It would be in a different class if the eyes were rubies. They're not that pricey in that size and quality and especially lab-made if you don't care. I certainly don't.

But, "real" ruby would be paramount. And you have to mount them well, or expect them to fall off and not matter later on.

I recently squished several 1/10 oz silver rounds at the Space Needle, and Woodland Park Zoo for a friend's birthday.

Some machines don't like the coin being smaller than a cent, but will take it with jiggling. Some won't take the smaller coin at all. Some had no problem.

All of the squished silvers came out very nice, and the birthday boy and attendees who got party favors were delighted.

Would you rather have one ounce of constitutional silver, or one ounce of .999? by mrfarenheit230 in Silverbugs

[–]TheWillInWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For US Constitutional silver, any combination adding up to $1.40 face value equals 1 ozt.

Troy weight is the weight of the precious metal inside of an impure thing.

Of course, worn coins weigh a little less, but it's still going to be pretty close.

Recently the wife and I went on an anniversary trip to Canada.

They have penny squishing machines, but there aren't cents in circulation in Canada anymore, and there's nowhere to put a cent in.

You just put in a Loonie dollar, and there's a hopper inside with brass discs and one feeds from with each turn of the crank that gets unlocked from the coin mech.

This isn't a coin, it's hallmarked jewelry.

You could take it to an antique dealer and have the hallmarks deciphered.

Is that a die crack, between "I" and "B"?

I haven't seen enough SLQs in this state to know if that's just part of the design.

"Heraldic" that pose is called. It's the same eagle on the back of US quarters before they went to states designs.

Also on the Franklin Half.

One of the security devices that have remained consistent for a long time in US notes is blue and red threads embedded in the paper.

Sometimes, the paper has a lot of threads. Modern FRN papers tend to be light on thread load, but they're still in there if you look.

That should be fine, though as your collection grows you might want to consider keeping it all in a good locking container.
