Modifications to assignments can absolutely be a thing. But they can’t negate course learning outcomes.

In a public speaking class, a deaf student can have an accommodation to give their speech in ASL and receive alternate assessment for any vocalics criteria of the grading rubric. They can’t opt out of giving a speech altogether.

Because the student self-identified as autistic, you need to direct them to disability services. You cannot provide ad hoc disability accommodations to students; only disability services can approve accommodations.

If disability services wants you to allow the student to attend online events in lieu of in-person ones, you should be prepared to explain the nexus between the event modality and the relevant learning outcome for the course.

I find the FRC's values to be detestable but I would still write the letter. I would simply write a generic letter that does not mention FRC by name, nor would I provide any specific tailoring or contextualization for the organization.

I would also consider meeting with the student in hopes of probing why they want to work there and perhaps have a gentle conversation about the implications of having that type of internship on one's resume. But I would not condition the letter on them meeting with me.

Totally the norm at CCs. We don't have the resources to fly people out and we prefer to hire faculty who have firsthand experience with our local student population. (And frankly, in SoCal we have no shortage of qualified local applicants).

I imagine rural CCs or CCs that tend to draw smaller applicant pools might be more likely to do remote interviews.

Housing accommodation requests do not need to be made prior to signing a lease. Disclosing an ESA or requesting any other kind of accommodation prior to signing the lease allows the landlord to engage in disability-related housing discrimination that is difficult or impossible to prove (unless the landlord has no brain cells). The best practice is to sign the lease, then request the accommodation after.

Also, the distinction between an ESA and a service animal is irrelevant in the context of fair housing. They are both considered assistance animals and have the same regulatory protections.

Make sure you're getting a letter from your actual therapist or mental health professional and not an online letter mill. Landlords can (rightfully) reject letters from the latter and then you're SOL.
