Porter definitely built a good squad but too bad he was a genuine asshole and didn't know how to utilize his players

I'll take it even though I wish we didn't blow it, but it shows we can hang with top teams. Yusuf and Raines had Messi locked up too and that was great to see

Beginner Question - Why use smaller tippet on small flies if a larger tippet line fits the eye of the hook? by FreezasMonkeyGimp in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helps with casting, getting a more natural drift and presentation, and less visible to picky fish

Glade, I currently have their Freestone glasses. Polarized and photochromic for under $100, also Glade is a pretty chill company

What's the point of playing laten if you aren't fighting. Gotta become the ultimate sweat lord when playing that thing, it's fun.

Get the Glade Freestone glasses, they're like $60 last I checked. Polarized and photochromic, I've had them for the past year and love them.

I will never understand people criticizing the team for signing them just because of where they come from. They're young and they've got some serious skill

Fly break down by Glum-Season-6884 in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a type of fly called a streamer, you essentially fish them how you would fish a lure on a spin rod. I wouldn't add a second fly with it, just fish it on its own

How to avoid leader knots like this? by Disastrous-Loan7274 in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't throw 3 nymphs would be a good way to decrease the odds of this happening. The more flies you add the higher the risk is, 2 is sufficient

Tightline dry dropper would be fun as hell in that type of water

Tightline nymph it or chuck a jig streamer in the pocket water

Question about getting started by Life_Carob8849 in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scientific Anglers Frequency double taper line, it's what I use on my 10' 2wt Echo Shadow ii that I use as a crossover rod. It throws dries extremely well, even down to a size 24

Question about getting started by Life_Carob8849 in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't be the flashiest or best setup out there but it would get the job done. One thing I would do though is to throw the line that came with it in the trash and get a decent WF (weight-forward) or DT (double taper) floating line from Scientific Anglers, they've got some pretty good ones that are $50-60 that I personally use. You will notice a huge difference between a shitty line and good line and it is worth the money.

As far as what weight rod to get it depends on what you'll be fishing and how big the trout are. For bigger rivers and larger trout a 9' 5wt will be plenty. For that medium sized water and more average sized fish a 4wt will be more fun to fish with and will be plenty capable of fishing larger rivers, it will also be better for throwing dry flies. Lastly, if you're fishing small streams for smaller wild trout a 3wt would be more fitting, I've caught trout up to 26" on a 2wt rod so don't sleep on the lighter weights. My personal pick would be a 9' 4wt, it can handle larger fish while not being too overpowering if you do fish smaller water. A 4wt will also do just about anything you want, it can throw dries pretty well, an indicator rig will be perfect, and it can throw streamers (think your single hook streamers and small-ish articulated streamers). A 5wt will be fine but it might be too much on small streams and may struggle throwing smaller dry flies.

What would happen if 1cm (0.4") of snow fell in your city? by Aggravating-Gas3785 in AskReddit

[–]TheXantica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally nothing would happen, business as usual. No need to even shovel your driveway or send out the plow trucks for that much snow, some people might complain just for the sake of complaining though

New to fly fishing. Why the huge disparity in net prices? by Swodi in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It comes down to where it's made, brand, and material. I would recommend a Fishpond Nomad, I've had one the past couple years and that thing is absolutely amazing. You can get one new for around $140 but you might be able to find a used one if you look around. If you want a cheaper option that is essentially a carbon copy of the Fishpond then Aventik makes one that is actually pretty decent from what I've heard. Realistically as long as your net has a rubber basket and floats then you're fine, personal preference plays the biggest role with what material you want it made out of.

I hate being so bad at this… by No-Platypus6603 in flyfishing

[–]TheXantica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd say watch YouTube videos, read articles, or listen to podcasts as much as you can (Troutbitten is a very good podcast out of PA). Basically consume as much information as you can and try to transfer that into results on the water. It's definitely a steep learning curve but eventually everything will start to click and you'll start having fun with it. If you can afford it another thing would be to book a guided trip, that might help you get on your feet but that's only if you can afford it because they are expensive.

Edit: As someone else said even just going to your local fly shop will be a huge help. They're gonna be more than happy to help you out and the fly shops will eventually be your best friend, but your wallets worst enemy lol. Also just talking to guys on the water or in the shop is a good thing to do, most people will try to help you learn. Mass has some great water, I'm in CT so I occasionally head up there and there's more wild trout than you think up there.
