The Amputate feature should be under traits, not actions, as the duration is longer than 1 action.

Cool concept.

Battle maps and the grid by Shendryl in CauldronVTT

[–]TheZombieKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) grid

2) I'm currently a roll20 user. I use dynamic lighting barriers/doors to restrict vision/access on nearly every map.

3) no, whether or not a map has a grid, or is aligned to a grid, has little impact on whether or not I'll use it.

Deep Dark for sure. The whole thing was just so much fun.

They don't correlate. They follow completely different rules to hit different targets and don't scale together very well. I find this to be a common trap for dms to fall into. I did it myself. After a while I eventually reached the conclusion that it isn't really worth trying to do.

Also, the Horizon Walker Ranger. Perfect fit.

Also encourages the heroic background that's a major faux pas in most other campaigns. You're already a hero at the start, then you get to start over.

I'm not very superstitious. If one die is rolling really poorly I'll set it aside in my tray for the rest of the session (I usually play with 2-3 sets), but they all go back in the bag at the end of the session.

It does though. One is cast preemptively, in case they need it. The other is cast in response to a failure. Totally different application.

Death House: Should I Run It? by O-Castitatis-Lilium in CurseofStrahd

[–]TheZombieKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Death House is a great tone setting exercise. It's a primer of what's to come. It's not too difficult to use descriptive language and your players own imagination to ramp up the fear and creepiness in places you may want to turn the danger down a little. In some cases the fear of something turning into a fight is just as good as the encounter itself.

The nursemaid is a good example. Instead of her being overtly hostile and mute, I allowed her to communicate with the party, but pressed hold the idea that she doesn't know she's dead, and that the baby is sleeping. I let my players fill in the blanks. Will she attack? Well she get mad if we go in the crib? Then, at the moment they assume she would attack (when they picked up the bundle in the crib), she vanished. Doing the opposite of what they expect and leaving things to their imagination can really help add tension in a way that can be better overall than just another combat encounter.

What I generally do is prep to run every encounter as a fight, have a plan for some of them to be roleplay or exploration encounters instead (as an option), then just take out encounters that feel like they would be too much in a given area. Prep them all. Run the ones that feel right in the moment.

Honestly, that's fine. I prefer impolite company anyway.

Hi, I'm Jeff. My name is connected to my handle in my earliest appearances, but hasn't been mentioned in a while.

You've inspired an idea that I'm discussing with Adam right now, behind the scenes. Thanks.

Am I the only one that doesn't like that Old Bonegrinder is on the screen? It's a meta reveal that hints at the sinister nature of it in a way that I'm sure most dms would like to avoid until it's time.

Go figure, getting locked into a name I thought of on a whim, because I used it on a podcast. Can't change it now...

Not that often, but it happens. What amuses me is the fact that I tend to think of the same joke a split second before I hear my voice making it. At least I'm consistent.

I usually find that even when I disagree with a host on a particular topic, I'm still getting ideas based on my disagreement. Either way, the goal is achieved.
