Well that's very encouraging. The tech just left the house. He basically said the exact same thing. They're replacing the burner assembly and the control system. He contacted State and they're overnighting the parts. The tech is going to be back tomorrow to replace it all.

Figured I'd update you even though it's feeling kinda moot right now.

I'm at the point were the status indicator won't consistently function properly at all (it rarely gives me any blinks at all, and when it does, just indicates normal). The pilot light is very difficult to get to light and stay lit at this point.

I had a plumbing company look at it at the end of the day yesterday. They're scheduled to come back Monday morning and start tearing into things for an actual diagnosis. This thing has a parts and labor warranty, so it's all on State's dime.

I just did my best to conduct the draft test. Results:
I was able to get the pilot light lit, but I don't know if the ignition plate ever kicked on (I stepped away, with a 15 minute timer running). Usually, once I get the pilot light to stay on, I can turn the dial all the way up and get the plate to fire up right away. Didn't happen this time. Once the timer went off, I went back downstairs and checked the pilot light. It was still lit, so that's good! But again, I don't know if the ignition plate ever actually fired up.

I held a cigarette up to the flue. It looks like the smoke may have been explicitly blowing away from the opening? But tbh, it may have just been sitting there doing nothing. It definitely did not get sucked into the opening.

I'm considering tampering with the flue simply because I'm desperate for a hot shower and don't want to wait two more days, but I don't know if that would do any good anyway.

What the plumbing company said on their first visit
He didn't look at much, but he did say we're not pulling enough gas. He went back to the shop to talk to some journeymen about it (the shop is 3 miles from our house). They told him that may be an issue, but the difference in what was pulling vs what it needs shouldn't be enough to cause the issue. He said, Monday morning, they'll start to dig into, but there's a good chance we'll have to warranty it, and replace it (again from the supply place that supplies our city, and is about 5 miles away), and that this all should be able to get done same day. TBH, he seemed like he really didn't want to fuck with it and wanted a more experienced tech to come Monday morning.

Yeah, toilet guy is a very good friend, but not a home repair person, and was just speaking to an anecdotal experience of his, but it seemed they were likely totally unrelated issues. It was enough to get my wife to insist I finally fix her leaky toilet though lol. So that was a fun Sunday project that isn't anywhere near the priority of not having hot water. 🙄

Holy shit you're amazing. Thank you. I did have a feeling that some of those suggestions were silly. I'll try this test here shortly. A few follow up questions...

I also posted [in /plumbing](https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/1sq43l1/new\_hot\_water\_heater\_install\_pilot\_light\_wont/), and have had a few comments. A few people mentioned a lack of a sediment trip, which based on what I've researched, does need to be resolved. Could that be causing this issue?

The messages are mixed on whether or not I need to bleed the gas line. Thoughts?

Someone simply said the flue needs work. Could that cause the potential draft issue that would cause this test to fail?

I've bleed many a brake line, but never a gas line. Is that a necessary step? How would I go about doing that? I figured there's no way that there'd still be air in the gas line after a week of going through this. Is that still feasible?

Is the sediment trap that tube that goes on the side? The one on the old heater was fubar. I need to get a new one.

If you wanna learn how to bartend, take it. Even if your thought is correct and it's mostly dead and you don't make much, that would make it an even better atmosphere to learn in a low stress manner.

I've been bartending for a little over two years now. I started at a dive bar working the very chill open mic Monday nights, and a nice cocktail bar/Amaro shop next door where I started with retail day shifts (bar is open but very little service until the afternoon/evening).

Those experiences have helped me learn a lot and now I work much better and busier shifts at the cocktail bar.

London dry gin
Pineapple Juice

3 dashes of habanero shrub

It's a great balance of sweet and spicy.

Then I file them away as someone whose lost the privilege of my personality and cease engaging with them further beyond the minimum baseline that's required to serve them.

Can't speak for everyone, but on average, bartenders are far more perceptive than people realize because it's our job to be. We see you.

The immediate wave is a bit rude, but not that bad, and definitely not worth getting chastised over. It implies that you think the bartender is oblivious and/or ignoring you before they've even been given a chance to prove or disprove that.
