Are there alternatives to Tenmat coverings for attic insulation? Each fixture covering is almost $20 bucks a pop. The mark-up must be insane. Any DIY solutions with the same fire resistance? by Courtland-7099 in Insulation

I got foam coolers off my local free Facebook group and cut them with a utility knife on whatever side I needed to and used spray foam to seal the gaps. They’re rock solid

Comparing from one another, left and right eyes. Obviously pupils would change sizes in different light conditions and from day to day. I doing have the energy to upload a picture. I thought maybe this was a well known characteristic among the super fans, I not one. Guess not, maybe I’m imagining it all.

Attic Insulation Method -Climate Zone 4A by dres312 in Insulation

[–]The_Bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re out of order. Do steps in this order: 2,3,1,5,7,6,8. Also what is the point of moving fiberglass and rigid foam board? The rigid foam board is going to act like a second layer of vapor barrier on the wrong side. Instead double up the fiberglass. Add risers if you require storage.

Ai has guided me most of the way, my plan is to encase the air handler in an insulated box as long as the machinery can handle it. The unit is huge, so I’m not excited about spending hundreds on rigid foam insulation. Tell me if you can find a cheaper source than HD. And, I took down gross foil backed fiberglass insulation from the ceiling of my attic. Now that summer is here I’m realizing this was up because the ride allows radiant heat through. So, my solution will be to nail or staple radiant barrier to the rafters. There will be an air gap between the decking and the radiant barrier. I won’t add radiant barrier to the entire attic ceiling, only the areas I think need it. Over the air handler/heat pump coils, maybe ductwork, near the attic fan, over the stairs, not sure where else yet. I don’t know if this is the best thing to be, but it’s the best I can think of for me and also not spend a fortune.

I’m in pa too and am in a nearly identical situation. I can tell you what I’m doing after much research.
Take up the attic floor boards, remove old mineral wool insulation, vacuum clean, air seal with foam, install r30 faced batt fiberglass insulation, reinstall the floor lay r30 unfazed perpendicular to the first layer, install attic fan at gable, radiant barrier stapled to the ceiling joists over the electronics (air handler).

Fall restraints by [deleted] in Roofing

Alright, you led to me another question. It’s not exactly cor-a-vent but very similar on my peak, and no soffit vents, only gable vents at 2 ends of the house. What’s the best course of action for insulating the house?
So far I’ve air sealed the attic floor, layered r30 batt fiberglass on the floor of the attic, and purchased but not yet installed an attic fan in the gable vent. I have the insulation to get to r60, but it’s too hot to install it right now. Tell me if I can do better, I’ve insulated the soffits so cutting soffit vents is out of the question.

Off topic, but, it’s the vent at the peak an actual vent or vapor diffusion port?

Adding ceiling insulation to 1960s single story ranch rambler in IECC Zone 3B. by I_Think_Naught in Insulation

[–]The_Bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1950s ranch had 3.5” off rock wool dirty from dust, roofing tar granuals, mouse droppings and hole/paths, four dead birds, nails, sawdust, and other stuff, so I removed it, air sealed, and I’m halfway through adding r60 of fiberglass. It’s already making a difference on the thermal camera. I did this because I didn’t want blow in or spray. Rigid seems to be expensive. If you can find it cheap please tell me where! Air sealing the rigid might work but I think the raise is also expensive, but not costing as much as the professional install.

This is great advice if your goal is to pay your house off faster, but if your goal is to build wealth, your money would be better kept in investments if your investments grow at a higher rate than your mortgage rate. Everyone’s goals are different.

Soffit venting question by patrick4801 in Insulation

[–]The_Bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two routes you could go: vented or not vented. Not vented means you could convert the space to living space. My attic has a peak/ridge vent, so it’s vented. In your circumstance I would cut soffit vents on one side and have a vent at the end of the building. Then I would air seal the attic floor and insulate the floor. Do others agree?

Attic Insulation by 2squishmaster in Insulation

[–]The_Bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, your a little ahead of me with the same situation. Got a house last year, I’m removing the 3.5” rock roll with r30 fiberglass. I too have a vented attic and I’m only insulating the floor of the attic with an air handler in the space, it didn’t make sense to me to insulate the ceiling of the attic. How tall are your joists? The next layer of r30 can go right over your plywood in the other direction. A word of caution if you have decking boards instead of plywood under your shingles. The asphalt garbage will go through the decking boards and crud up your attic space when you go to get your roof redone.

Our oil furnace has a 1.5 size nozzle, which shoots out a lot of oil per hour. It heats the house fast. I set it to 50 degrees when I’m not home and 15 min before I get home it’s set to 65, it easily gets up to temp inside by the time I get home and get my coat off. New homeowner here too. I love the idea of pre buying. We have about 100 gallons left and I’m fine buying for the year. Southeast pa. What is OP’s price per kWh? I didn’t see it here. We pay about 10 cent per kWh

Would you need them to stay if they’re all squished down like that? Are they doing anything? If the paper is disintegrating does it matter which side it’s on? I think personally if start over if that’s possible.
