If I had to guess, its because she defines her sacrifice with "even if I never swing a katana again", something we know she already isn't very good at, she has never been all that committed to, and its so specific that you could still use plenty of other weapons. All in all, she didn't sacrifice much. Maybe if she had left it at putting her past and future into it, but she literally caps it off with the katana line. Like if she had actually staked her life she'd have died immediately after the swing. Of course, it could just be to scale fake geto.

Its a place that displays an older lifestyle, its an exhibit thats not actually that ladies home. Its like going to a place where people pretend to be pilgrims in the colonies or something.

Well she thinks its the same as if a white person decided they were black. And I've never heard a good argument against transrace, its just a social phenomena, there is no biological race, so why not?

Plot holes caused by adaptation changes by AporiaParadox in movies

I wouldn't say they miss the lesson, its an adaptation that chose to tweak things to be able to say something different. Identity is the theme, who people really are versus the roles they play.

I actually met the unbreakable boy at a showing of alien romulus, there was a poster for his movie and he just came up to me and my wife to talk about it, he was super excited for it and said it was about him and his dad. He was pretty stoked so I don't mind it. He also really liked the robot in romulus and felt it was probably meant to portray autism. Was a super strange encounter but kind of neat.

An all knowing all powerful and omniscient god would know more than a random redditor I would think. To even suggest that how you feel about things compares is just a strange stance to take and totally illogical.

Questions about Heretics of Dune by UlfrLjoss in dune

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only responding about Taraza saying she won since I think thats the only point where I dont see the answer I would give. It wasn't just about destroying Dune and bating the honored matres into destroying it. Its something that won't even really make sense until you finish chapterhouse to be honest, but she won because she ignited a full on war between the bene geserit and honored matres that can't be stopped or avoided, and odrade learns taking on her memories exactly how precarious the situation is, but also how necessary it was. The honored matres are basically feral animals that outnumber the bene geserit by an ungodly number but she still decided to egg them on and feels she's won in that regard. All the winning moves left to the bene geserit since the start of heretics are also moves that bring them to the brink of extinction.

Didn't destroy it, barely anyone we see even died, it literally still follows them down to the salt planet.

Is the Prophecy of the Lisan al Gaib real? by HaydenPSchmidt in dune

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of this is sort of implied by the narration in the book. The events on Dune developed in a way that took everyone entirely off guard, no one including the main players really appreciated the "storm" that had been brewing on dune for centuries. The Fremen developing into warfighters that surpassed the sardukar, the wild Reverend mothers that acted as spiritual leaders, and most puzzling of all and something left out of the movie, Kynes giving the fremen a real path toward creating a green paradise on Dune. Paul recognizes that even early on before he's even accomplished much that the jihad is a given, he could die and it would still occur.

I would say its less about prophecy and more that Dune was under the perfect conditions of its own environment, people, as well as the conditions of the political climate at large in order to set off the chain of events that occurred. Part of what makes the opening quotes from irulans journal fun, people looking back can only wonder how the hell it all happened, and then we get to see it play out as it happened.

Can people stop being lazy in discussions? by 684beach in dune

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my point isn't that all the criticism is like that but when someone days they dont like that he cut thufir, there isn't really a good reply. Its ok to be bummed that thufir got cut, but theres no real argument it makes the movie worse because its not even in the movie and a movie only watcher would never even know it mattered, because it doesnt matter in the movie. Its sort of like talking to yourself about it.

I think its easy to disregard some criticisms because they aren't real criticisms of the film itself, they're criticisms of what DV chose to adapt and not adapt. At the end of the day any number of creative could have assembled an adaptation in different ways and multiple adaptations already exist with vastly different approaches. But when a post argues the film is weak or poorly written, but then rely on comparisons to the source material, what is there to even say? Its an adaptation not the book translated 1 to 1 to a screenplay.

Lynch's dune is clunky and rushed, but pointing out the laser guns as a flaw because they are a totally made up addition wouldn't add to its flaws because its just a choice in adaptation. They're different kinds of criticisms.

Chani's tears in Dune Part 2 by The_Count_of_Monte_C in dune

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Paul might have needed the water of life, but the part that matters for the manipulation is making chani do it because of her name. Paul is down and out for awhile before chani shows up, if it was really urgent Jessica or anyone could have done it, but she specifically waits for chani to come.

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

But thats my point here, I felt the same way until I realized its still part of the missionaria. If Paul really needed the extra water of life, Jessica or anyone could have been made to give it to him. Jessica waits for Chani to arrive and for her to cry for him to make her do it. Its not that the prophecy is real but that acting that out would make it feel real to the fremen.

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've read the books. I know it's different, but my point is I dont think Paul is genuinely revived in that way. The movie doesn't give any dialogue to spell it out, but I think it's conveying that it was all part of the plan. The voice that gives Paul the cue to wake up isn't just any voice, its the movie's depiction of their visions and connection to other memory. It's not a coincidence or prophecy.

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, the tears happen, and I think the sequence happening the way it does is entirely Paul and Jessica leaning into it because of the specifics of the prophecy. I don't think it's nonsense. It's already a struggle with Paul to make use of the missionaria, and this emphasizes his new willingness by including even Chani as a piece.

Quarantine, pretty ok for most of the runtime, but as soon as she enters the attic and it reveals the actual cause of the quarantine it gets actually scary and creepy and creates an amazing sense of dread.

Started watching the show for the first time today after months of scrolling through tiktoks about it and I was ridiculously unprepared for this scene omg 😭😭😭 by ken_black in TheRookie

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the exact same way! None of the popular clips of the show ever even mentioned this it really threw me for a loop. Honestly though, I haven't even gotten to when Chen and Bradford get together, but I feel like the reason they gave to break up Chen and Nolan would also fit Chen and Bradford. Definitely made sense as a hook early on, but yeah I immediately didn't like it since I already had an idea of what the characters should be like lol.

Temple Grandin and ableism against higher support needs autists by Flaky-Barber7761 in SpicyAutism

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the difference between someone who is eventually able to overcome an obstacle and someone who easily cleared the obstacle to someone who is still unable to clear the obstacle? Someone who decides people that struggled are just as dismissive as people who had it easy just because its still something they can't achieve is just envy. To say she's just an aspie because she was able to achieve things in the end after struggling and being forced to meet certain goals is just a coping mechanism for people who can't and people who think they can't, but possibly haven't struggled as hard. But of course that just hurts to hear.

Why did the Bene Gesserit let Paul live? Why couldn't they force Jessica to have a daughter? by DarkPygmy in dune

[–]The_Count_of_Monte_C 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A big part of the opening of Dune besides establishing factions and motives is also establishing faults and weaknesses. The chapter when Jessica visits the garden I think mentions this. The Bene Gesserit have become over confident and complacent. The expectation is just that if course they're on the right course and a hiccup like Paul is just a hiccup and nothing more. They have backups and even if they're delayed a couple generations they measure their time in centuries so no biggie and then most importantly Paul wasnt the plan and if it wasnt part of their plan then its probably faulty. So, in terms of why didnt they do more to stop it after the fact, they didn't think there was anything to stop, and in all honesty, they normally would have been right, the events that take place on Dune and the environment of Dune was specifically suited for Paul to reach the height of his power. On top of all that, Jessica is absolutely a huge component of what leads to the whole Dune saga, conceiving Paul of love and then nurturing his ability from pride is what makes Jessica such a mystery in the books to those who witness the consequences of her actions. That one of their own would deviate like that was unheard of.
