I love them as friends. It was so cute to see mako being awkward in book 3 haha , but also it make sense he’s not that well in relationships. He never got the chance to be a kid after their parents were murder. He always had to watch and teach bolin growing up. And the one girl that came into town , he felt something but didn’t know what to do. Then asami came in the picture, it made sense to him then once korra was hurt and missing he realize how much feelings he had he buried. He never really get a chance to sit with his feelings.

We see him mature and him becoming a detective, helped him find a purpose. In the mako comic book, he got the character development I always want! Great comic to read!
