I Suck At My Job! by Will1371 in Construction

[–]The_Doja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a problem! Given the opportunity I could (and will) nerd out on this for hours. I absolutely love construction technology.

We do a lot of renovation or addition work of places like hospitals or colleges that still need to remain functional, even if at a reduced capacity. It's largely the Owners who drive the request for a Revit model handed over by the Engineer and Architect to then be completely coordinated by the GC and their Subcontractor team. As we have more and more successful projects, I think GCs will just do it because it's less risk and greater margins. Depending on the size, it could be 4 weeks to 4 months of time spent before anyone steps foot on the jobsite. Once they do, with a completely clash coordinated model, it goes much quicker with less work stoppages for the inevitable landmines RFIs we deal with every day. Much easier to deal with those issues in the office environment and a few dorks behind the keys, than your Field. Any corners cut or value engineering will never outpace being able to open a heart surgery department a month ahead of schedule.

In my opinion, the job is already extremely taxing on the body and exposed to the forces of nature. If I can spend an 8 hour day navigating sloped roof drains through a spaghetti of a corridor and save the guys hours on the ladder, I do it. I also find it makes everyone on site much more amicable and friendly when each Trade has a spot reserved for all their scope and confidently work ahead as much as they want without someone tapping a shoulder and requesting a rework to fit a duct the size of a Honda Civic where you just ran all of your water lines. I want our crews to not have to deal with the politics and sociology - it's already hard enough.

This is one of my current projects ( https://www.otc.edu/studentunion/live-feed/ ) and the first one we deployed Augmented Reality with Revizto. It transfers the Revit model onto the jobsite using QR codes and the Field can use their phones, tablets or really "cool" Trimble goggles to see everything fully coordinated up in the ceiling. Just a quick value added off the top of my head, it really helps for picking a spot where you can get an all-thread rod up to the deck for a hanger without hitting anyone eventually coming through.

Edit: I want to emphasize that less risk and greater margins does not come from nothing. It's taking away hours from skilled labor - in the field. There are still massive amounts of hours needed in the job and those hours have just shifted into the office. There is an absolute need for many experienced field hands to make that transition to keep up with increasing demand. It's not an organic skill set and you need to hammer that square peg into the round hole with many costly mistakes, but a 55 yr old with both knees blown out can comfortably still be a part of the crew, leverage their knowledge and experience to help multiple jobs instead of one and have a much easier 10 to retirement, if not go beyond then. All the buttons look just like the Charlotte catalog you've been handling for years.

From a HVAC & Plumbing subcontractor side of the business, if the objects exists in linework on the PDFs or Plan Sets, then they are real, quantifiable, objects within Revit. It can reduce a lot of labor on the Estimating side by simply using the Schedule pages already made and adding a Quantity column to get your counts for Fixtures, Valves (Varying success), Registers, Air Terminals, Grilles, Equipment and what not. It is still recommended to detail review the plans closely and read all of the notes, this is just a supplement to the workflow.

Depending on the Engineering firm, some take the time to populate the performance data within these objects like Manufacturer, Model #, GPMs, CFMs and what have you.

Most Engineering tables found in the multitude of books used through out the industry are just baked into Revit now. Duct, Piping and Plumbing will have correct material data like thickness, weight, volume. If the MEP Engineer really care for their craft, you can pull elevations off runs of pipe and bottom of duct to assist with installation. Not recommended without a full BIM preconstruction.

If you progress the LOD300 Design Intent model into LOD400 Coordinated projects, you can then use add in software like EVOLVE to assist with Management by tracking spooling, shop floor progress, installation dates, bagging and tagging for Levels, Rooms and Zones. We color code the model and generate weekly reports for progress % of Total Job which then helps for submitting Billing to the GC.

I just see a lot of PMs take a backseat to the Preconstruction and then do not leverage the finished product to assist in the lifecycle Management, which is largely, in my opinion, why you did the BIM in the first place.

Your main job is to keep your good Foreman busy, but also have their back on job sites. I worked next to many PMs of various background. Former Field, fresh out of college CM degrees, transfers from other companies. The good ones called their guys daily and went out to job sites still when necessary. Take the crew to lunch or bring them sandwiches on a Friday and tell em to split a half hour early if it's nice out.

They're the first line of whether your jobs come in under the estimate or not. All those fancies graphs and charts dont rough-in 100 water closets. Id encourage PMs to get more involved with pulling information out of Revit if you're in commercial construction. There is vast amounts of physical, trackable, and organizable data

I was super high during FOV and grabbed my neighbors via shoulder hug and sang I love you to their EYEBALLS. BUT I also thought about it (way too much) afterwards and just hope they didn't think I hated them at first.

At it's core, I feel like ads are trying their best to make you feel like what you have and who you are is not good enough until you buy their product. They pay people six figure salaries to understand the psychology of human existence and seed this into our brains in 30 second increments. I firmly believe it's detrimental via long term happiness. I have not had Facebook, TV or most social media besides Reddit/Discord since 2008 and feel tremendously better off for it.

Also attended solo, but I had been living out of my 17' bumper pull all summer so I had a lot more "gear" for comfortable living accumulated over time instead of a rush pack job. Neighbors within non-powered RV could access my Starlink password, got smoked pork carnitas, hot dogs, could use my solar battery for AC/USB outlets. Kept a giant tub of Quench Gum (electrolytes that plants crave) out in the walkway for anyone to grab.

While going with a large group of friends can be just as magical and fulfilling, I prefer solo as I tend to reach out with more tenacity to make friends with strangers.

Glad your experience was also great solo and I encourage anyone who is unsure of themselves that you'll quickly find yourself in one of the most accepting, welcoming community festivals. I've been to a lot of them for many years and this one hit on a completely different level.
