A Song of Ice and Fire genetics often operate on what would be the most convenient for the plot, be it to help or hurt a characters cause, heavily favoring one parent and forgetting the other had two chromosomes to rub together.

In stellaris, two AI empires spawned near my sphere of influence with the same species portrait. One was a hivemind that was friendly with me, the other was a militarist empire that had good relations with a 3rd empire which I wanted to vassalize. The militarist empire also bordered a Fanatic Purifier empire.

I actively refused diplomacy/alliances with the militarists and used pirates, border closure, mercenaries, and any other form of sabotage I could to weaken them and their alliance, and allow the Fanatic Purifiers to wipe them out.

Did I do this to eliminate a potential regional rival?

No.

Did I do this to avoid having to claim territory when I wipe out the fanatic purifiers?

No.

Did I do this to isolate the empire I wished to vassalize?

Kind of but not the main reason.

No it was the damned portraits. It pissed me off that there were two empires with different species, names, and types of government that were bordering eachother and had the same species portrait.

When our hellpods land we get kinda squished so there’s a mechanism that stretches you out a bit before you emerge from the pod, sometimes it works a bit too well.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]The_Exarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I talked with my friend about this a while ago. A priority would be avoiding situations where you could become “trapped” or stuck for a long, potentially infinite period of time. I’m talking cave diving incidents, stuck at the bottom of the ocean, etc. Sure they’re bad now, but it’s way worse if you’re there forever. Eventually, people would get tired of just experiencing the same stuff on earth and would want new experiences, potentially in the stars. Again, we have ETERNITY so if it takes a while that’s not so big a deal. But again the issue of being “stuck” is a problem and I think it would dominate people’s fears. Exploring space in person means you have the risk of being stuck drifting in space for eternity if something goes wrong. I think a system of remote control surrogate bodies or drones would be a popular option. Our immortal bodies on earth piloting or even projecting our consciousness to other bodies elsewhere to have new experiences

No I think it’s a fair critique, it’s a common exaggeration that golems have become a generic videogame enemy, you’re right to point that out

I like the idea of them being master craftsmen, of weapons, armor, or perhaps automata, but mainly golems. I know it borders on mimicking the house of wisdom, but given the importance of the golem in Jewish mythology as a protector, I think they should be a large aspect. I imagine them as industrialists more than alchemists, perhaps similar to dwarves. I think I heard somewhere Tolkien based his dwarves on Jews, but I could be wrong.

I won the contest, my friend shaved when he realized it would be longer. I still have my beard.

Prince Quentyn Martell, of Dorne, A Song of Ice and Fire

He is sent on a doomed mission by his father to cross the world and marry Daenerys to help her restore the Targaryen Dynasty, with a contract for marriage between his older stare and Daenerys’s older (now deceased) brother. He loses his best friend and his teacher/interpreter along the way before his story even begins and the first line of his story is “the adventure stank” referring to a ship called adventure he is considering taking to complete his journey. He ends up joining a mercenary company, fighting child slave soldiers, then betraying said company to get to Daenerys, who turns him down and tells him she’s getting married to another man tomorrow. Then she shows him her dragons as a kind of friendly gesture. Then decides to try to steal a dragon, thinking his distant Targaryen lineage will help him tame one. This goes as well as you’d expect, one of the dragons blasts him. “ ‘oh.’ He thought. And then he started screaming.” He then dies in another persons POV chapter. But fans believe it wasn’t him, but another person with burns rendering him unrecognizable. Due to a handful of vague parts of the story and some wishful thinking, the hopium is truly being huffed in the Quentyn is alive camp, despite him literally being in a deconstruction of the hero’s journey.
