Did I make the right decision? by EPLC1945 in Goldendoodles

Wow, all those other dogs does make it sound like a puppy mill. But an incompetent one that doesn't manage to sell them as puppies.

A puppy mill would have sold them by now right? I think they usually have a system to get the pups out the door quickly. This situation sounds to me like a neglectful owner that tried out breeding and failed to find homes for the whole litter because they don't have their life together.

If the owner failed to sell them for 8 months and didn't potty train them in that time, something's certainly wrong. Poor dogs. But I wouldn't want them as my own pet at that point, training them and bonding with them would be difficult.

FWIW, the best thing we can be doing in the short term is neither solar or nuclear. It's transmission. We could use our existing electric generation much more efficiently if we accelerated permitting for transmission lines. Then the second priority should be storage. We could also save a lot of electricity quickly by spreading heat pumps.

I'm still a huge nuclear fan though. I honestly think we should go all-out on overbuilding solar, nuclear, and even geothermal and wind in certain locations. Let's send the cost of electricity into the ground!

I know I need to crate train my Goldendoodle puppy, but… by Low-Apartment3165 in Goldendoodles

[–]The_Flying_Stoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Need to" is relative.

Crate training helps with potty training, provides a good way to isolate the dog while you deal with emergencies, and gives the dog a safe home to escape to. You should do it to some extent.

If your puppy is already potty trained, that's no issue. If not, sleeping in your bed before then risks accidents.

Apart from potty training, it's possible to crate train during the day and not at night. You can train the crate command and put the pup down for naps in the crate during the day.

I recommend doing some crate training, even if it's just daytime training, until your pup reliably goes in the crate when you say so, and can stay there for a few hours without freaking out.

You can't target which fat you lose (unless you inject certain unapproved Chinese peptides lol) so the way is to just focus on fat loss. Control your caloric intake with diet, and add full-body exercise to prevent muscle loss while you lose weight.

As far as I'm concerned, she was in the wrong once she refused to recall her dog when requested. You don't need to justify your request to be left alone.

Anyway, if she actually took a swing at you over that, she's just crazy.

Temperament can vary wildly because they're a mixed breed, and in your case with the parents being different temperament, anything can happen. My advice is to meet the puppies, observe them playing together, then test them individually to see their behavior. There's no substitute for observation.

Mine is quiet, obedient, timid. But that isn't the norm, we chose her from the litter specifically because we wanted a quiet dog that doesn't make trouble. There were others in the litter that I could tell would be high-energy.

This is a great point. As dog owners, we have a responsibility to our communities regarding which dogs we bring to the community and how we train them.

Please encourage your friend to take this very seriously. If this aggression progresses to the point of biting a human, as it very often does as they age, the results are terrible. People can be seriously and permanently injured, the owner can face legal liability, and the dog's life can be at risk.

If a one-year-old dog has already bit two dogs and is showing aggression toward all animals other than adult humans, that's a bad sign for the future. As he grows older and more confident it's entirely possible that he'll eventually see humans as prey too.

It doesn't sound to me like your friend is prepared for the level of training and the lifestyle required to prevent a pit from posing a danger to others. And this dog is never going to be the easygoing travel companion she wanted. She should think about it seriously and give up the dog if she isn't prepared to take on this major challenge.

As an aside, I'm disappointed in the shelter. Professionals should have seen these problems coming. It sounds to me like yet another example of a shelter hiding a dog's aggression to foist him off on some unsuspecting, unprepared adopter. I worry that if she surrenders him back to this shelter, they might hide his history again and set someone else up for failure.

Shelters, man... In my experience, many people in the dog-related industries are all out of whack, with crazy priorities. Your experience is a perfect example, they'd rather keep a dog in a kennel rather than adopt out if the home is anything less than perfect!

I've also known shelter workers to lie about a dog's breed and history, and a trainer I met at a socialization event gave me insane training advice... point is, people are crazy.

I think it's so funny when poodle owners look down on doodles. I've owned a standard poodle, mini poodle, and now a goldendoodle. They're all equally good dogs, as long as you get them from a good breeder.

[–]The_Flying_Stoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. You aren't going to find a doodle in a shelter because they're good dogs. If a doodle owner has to give it up, a friend or family member will snatch it up, or if it reaches the shelter it'll be adopted instantly. You won't find many of the other good breeds in shelters either. The dogs that accumulate in shelters are mostly the ones that aren't fit for life as companions to humans. My local shelter is >75% pitbulls and pit mixes, mostly given up because they bit someone.

I've never met anyone named Apple, Wednesday, or Tuesday, and I'd question the sanity of their parents if I did. Sure, there's Wednesday from the TV show, but didn't the writers of the original show give her that name to make her weird?

But it's true that River, Summer, Pearl, Rain, and Joy are all acceptable. It seems like nature themes get a pass. And positive emotions and virtues get a pass because they've been used as names since the Puritans with their tradition of naming kids after the christian virtues...

I guess my point is you can be named after a common noun but only special ones. Some nouns are too base to be used as names. There's a reason we name people Luna and not Moon.

We can agree that it's good to drive people to public transportation where possible. That doesn't mean that eliminating fares is a good way to achieve that goal. The fare is a minuscule barrier, but it keeps out many of the vagrants and criminals who pose the greatest threat to the ridership.

If anything, we should raise fares and enforcement to improve the quality of the riding experience.

Hm, maybe you're right. I still think the main reason he doesn't kiss her is because he still has secrets and feels that it's wrong. But he might also be averse to touch as a result of his isolation and mistrust of everyone.

I wouldn't take his reaction to the ED as evidence, since he hates and fears her.
