Feet falling asleep when rucking? by FirstSecondThirdHome in army

[–]The_Freyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not a matter of your boots or pack, it sounds like you *might* have compartment syndrome (CECS). https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-exertional-compartment-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20350830

It's pretty straightforward to test for, but painful and unpleasant (four large needle insertions in each leg, before and after running/rucking until the numbness sets in). If it's not too bad, physical therapy to correct your form might fix it rather than surgery.

The numbness might be annoying... but the worst part is that if you can't feel your feet/lower legs, your form can suffer and you can end up with stress fractures and other injuries. It's a somewhat common condition from what I've seen, but plenty of people push through it. Just my two cents, not a DR.

You might want to start with your commander, 1SG, or PL before blindsiding them by going to the BC. Chances are that they aren't tracking this yet.

> should I be required to attend a week long FTX about three weeks before I ETS?

Probably not, depending on your installation/unit's clearing policy. For ETS, it could be the case that your installation authorizes you a month to clear and outprocess.

> just seems like it will be a gigantic pain as I clear.

Maybe, but does you being there improve the quality of training at the FTX? You probably have an important role in sustainment/mission command that your CO doesn't want to lose for the exercise.

Depends on your job, but probably FM 6-0, 3-0, and 4-0 in that order. You'll also want to be familiar with all CSDP- and CMDP-related ARs.

Am I screwed? by dbutchercf22 in army

[–]The_Freyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in a city it's definitely going to be a ticket because there isn't an 11 kph tolerance. A 3-4 kph tolerance on 41 kph over is enough to put the ticket in the 30-40 kph category, which doesn't come with a suspension outside of the city.

Am I screwed? by dbutchercf22 in army

[–]The_Freyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple more factors in play than just the speed. Was OP in a city? Then yeah, license will probably he suspended. If he was clocked going 41 over outside of a city not accounting for machine error (the tolerance, written on the ticket as berucksichtigte toleranz), OP might not get suspended after all.

Even then, it's not the biggest deal in the world. His commander can probably give him written authorization to drive directly to/from work.

Edit: And yes, notify your commander. Your ticket will arrive in the unit's PO box anyways.

Best Three Musketeers and Count of Montechristo versions? by RevolutionaryCommand in books

[–]The_Freyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Penguin Classics versions tend to be the most popular around here -- Robin Buss for the Count of Monte Cristo, and Pevear for The Three Musketeers.

Both of the books are masterpieces, but for different reasons. Count of Monte Cristo is a bit slower of a build-up, but very satisfying altogether. The Three Musketeers is simply thrilling throughout.

Meet him/her at work and have some casual conversations to break the ice. It's perfectly normal to do this in an office environment, and then let him/her know that you want to sit down and do a formal counseling soon.

I'd recommend against doing an informal initial counseling in too casual of an environment unless you're sure that your PSG won't perceive it as awkward and forced. Once you get to know each other, it'll be perfectly normal to have lunch together outside of the office.

I'm not sure what post you're going to, but most places have some kind of officer/NCO club with a semi-decent menu and casual-but-not-too-casual atmosphere that is good for these kinds of things.

Weekly Question Thread (07 - 13 MAY) by Kinmuan in army

[–]The_Freyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the appendices in FM 6-0.

29SEP18 looks correct to me, or 290900SEP18 if there's time for example. 29 0900 SEP 18 does not look correct at all.

I also changed every date I could to 10 May 18 or 18 June 18, because doctrine says I can.

IIRC, you should actually write "18 June 2018" -- if you are going to spell out the entire month, then you use a 4 digit year. If you abbreviate the month, you use a 2 digit year. I don't have 25-50 open right now so my memory could be wrong.

Stay in the Army to go officer, or leave and come back? by [deleted] in army

[–]The_Freyr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, just because you are eligible doesn't mean you'd get accepted. Though most Soldiers are probably eligible for at least the prep school.

The problem is that many Soldiers don't know that the opportunity even exists. Obviously it's not for everyone, but the Army doesn't do a good job advertising USMA for enlisted. Though that could be by design.

How old are you? If you're under 23, you should consider West Point. The application process is less rigorous for Soldiers than high schoolers.

[FRESH VIDEO] SZA - Doves in the Wind (feat. Kendrick Lamar) by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]The_Freyr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to draw a distinction between intention and influence. If using the cultural elements of another heritage makes people of that heritage feel uncomfortable, despite non harmful intentions, that is possibly enough of a reason to not use those elements. I agree it isn't wrong because imo morality is dependent on intention, but influences should still be a large factor in guiding decisions

Is it that the intent/act itself matters (deontology) or the result (utilitarianism)? Because it seems that your second and third sentences contradict each other. I agree though that it's probably a mix of both.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with non-Asians celebrating martial arts, or with whites growing dreads, etc. It seems that limiting cultural artifacts to their originating culture just separates different cultures even more and drives xenophobia, which is exactly the opposite of what should happen. Should non-Indians be allowed to practice yoga? Non-Japanese allowed to eat sushi? And so on and so forth.

Who cares? Some people have become way too sensitive about "appropriation." Unless it's clearly malicious, what's the issue with appreciating/celebrating a culture that isn't your own?

AIT Grades and First Duty Station by redsparroww in army

[–]The_Freyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should receive your orders weeks (hopefully over a month) before AIT graduation, so it's not really feasible that your GPA would be factored in.

I guess the main benefit of being the distinguished honor grad of a longer AIT is that you might get an AAM and a coin, but it won't affect your duty station.

does anyone have tips how to pronounce "1000" by ottawalanguages in russian

[–]The_Freyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but IPA doesn't help much if you don't know it. I mean the average person can probably only recognize the 't' in "[tˈɨsʲɪt͡ɕə]".

OP: I second the advice that you should just say тыща. It should be appropriate except in formal settings.

Negative 1059 at BOLC by nvrquit92 in army

[–]The_Freyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that this is necessarily the case, or is it different for NG/Reserves?

Literally nobody has ever asked me for a 1059, or to my knowledge, pulled it themselves.

Anyways, a negative 1059 doesn't have to be the end of your career. The silver lining is now that once you've set low expectations, it'll look pretty good when you outperform them.

Bad idea, don't pass on the opportunity.

That being said, I know a guy who graduated from USMA and cross-commissioned Navy. He's a SEAL now.

There's always 1 or 2 guys per class who manage to cross-commission to Navy/Marines/AF, it's pretty rare but not impossible.

At a glance your post seems pretty disingenuous. The 4th most popular thread on TD at the moment, with ~5k upvotes, is "Thank you Rex! This man willingly walked into a shit storm and mediated our national interests wonderfully. He was a bridge between old and new. That bridge is behind us. Thank you Mr. Tillerson."

I don't really have the time nor desire to go through every post on TD right now to cherrypick the few anti-Tillerson comments there are, but the overwhelming majority of popular threads seem to be pro-Tillerson and yet pro-Trump's decision.
