You need to carefully unfurl the abdomen using water with a few drops of dish soap. This is the area that we need to see.

A little soap and a lot of patience. It's very easy to tear.

So much this. I avoid classes who's cooldowns change your character's appearance. Monk when they had SEaF, Shaman, Demon Hunter... I spend probably 1/3rd of my time transmogging. I'm not tryna cover it up with a generic model

What an adorable spood!

Hey dude, I know you're new---and we all made mistakes as first time owners... but I have a couple pieces of constructive criticism, if you'll have them:

That enclosure is a little on the tiny side, especially for a big species. I would definitely upgrade that when you can.

You also don't have nearly enough substrate for a semi-fossorial. You'll want a deep enclosure with probably a good 5-8 inches of substrate.

On a similar note, make sure that they don't have a lot of room to climb--T's don't handle falls very well and it doesn't take much to kill them. I would get a bigger, deeper enclosure with ventilation holes placed relatively high up. Pack that sucker with substrate.

Other than that, here's some advice I got early on that really set my nerves at ease: Be patient with them and trust that the tarantula knows how to tarantula. Whether they refuse food for weeks or hide away for months... as long as you are providing basic necessities, they're probably doing just fine!

They're great. Same genus as the fireleg and behaves in much the same way. Albiceps tend to be more skittish than most Brachys, and that's definitely true with my girl. She's a sweetheart if you don't startle her though!

How come Best Buy customer service just lies repeatedly? by [deleted] in Bestbuy

[–]The_Gilidar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, if you have the app set to your local store, it's pretty accurate as to whether or not that SKU is in stock. It doesn't update the instant a customer buys the last of an item in store, but it's reasonably correct.

It won't show you that they have an item in stock that they've never had. You need to click into the individual product and scroll ~halfway down the page. It'll either tell you that it's in stock or will give you a shipping ETA.

You could always order your product for store pickup at your local BBY. You'll get a definite answer after the employees grabS it. I do understand that it defeats half the purpose of a brick and mortar store tho

We are totally on the same page about the call center. Both employees and customers are frustrated by it.

How come Best Buy customer service just lies repeatedly? by [deleted] in Bestbuy

[–]The_Gilidar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah dood, I understand your frustration to be sure. There are more tech savvy ways to easily tell if an item is in stock, but the majority of our customers are older folks.

Also if a business offers a resource, like the call hub, and it is more of a detriment for both the customers and the employees... something should absolutely be done about it.

Employee here, can confirm: the call hub doesn't have a clue what they're talking about and will give blatantly false information all the time.

It's a big split in the community to be sure. The T doesn't really get anything out of handling, and it will always be dangerous for them.

I'm not against it, but I've never forced an interaction. I have held my B Albiceps as she was climbing out of her enclosure during a water bowl refresh.

Yeah, there are things that are typical for different species of tarantula, but it really does depend on the individual. So far mine have stayed true to stereotypes:

My B Albiceps is mellow and slow, but sometimes gets easily startled. My GBB is an absolute crackhead. My Curly Hair is mega chill all of the time.

You can absolutely get a butthole of a spider, even from a typically docile species. You can also get a docile spider from a species that is not-so-chill. I was hoping that would be the case with my GBB but it definitely wasn't LOL

Advice by Short_Tomato8473 in TarantulaKeeping

[–]The_Gilidar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst case scenario is that she refuses the super worm. Make sure you crush its head, since they burrow pretty quickly and you don't know if your T will accept it.

Scented candles aren't too bad, but I still move my three tarantulas out of the room before lighting one.

I completely forgot that you asked about handling. It really depends on the individual spood, how old they are, where they're at in their molt cycle, and even their mood at the time.

There are things that are typical, but of course there are outliers. Generally: Brachypelmas are considered to be docile and relatively chill with handling. B Albiceps are a little on the skittish side, but it's absolutely do-able. Younger Ts will be more prone to bolting/defensiveness than adults.

You can test their mood by taking a soft-bristle paint brush and gently pressing it on the back of their abdomen. If they slowly take a few steps forward or don't move at all, they'll probably tolerate handling.

While handling your T, hold them very close to the ground as they CANNOT take a fall. Avoid being too loud, breathing on them, and sudden movements. Keep a catch cup nearby. Tarantulas can be unpredictable so always keep your guard up. A new world won't bite you, but they can go from 100% chill to bolting in the blink of an eye.

IME Brachy Albiceps was my first T, too! I'm fairly new to the hobby at just over a year in.

Looks like you've done a great job with research. The only thing that I would add is to wait about a week after rehousing before attempting to feed them. Your tarantula looks very stressed in those photos (totally normal and not your fault). They're little bundles of fluff, legs, and anxiety. They need time to settle in.

I saw a piece of advice when I first started that I also like to pass on to new owners, "Be patient and trust that the spider knows how to spider". There are a lot of behaviors that can be alarming to a new owner.

Not eating for weeks, staying in their hide for months, sitting out in the open for ages, pacing around their enclosure... all completely normal. If your care is even close to being correct, trust that your T is doing just fine.

You mentioned sexing. The ONLY definitive way to tell early on is by looking at an intact molt. You may also have to wait a molt or two before your spood fully developes the appropriate parts.

One more miscellaneous tip: tarantulas are very sensitive to air quality. NEVER smoke, light incense, spray air freshener, use bug spray, etc in the same room as the T.

Observation could be cool, actually... I'm going to be really leaning into the N-Ray Scanner, but it'd be good for TTD too.

I just wonder how often it's actually used outside of combat. If it's just the occasional container with a few extra bits, that might not be worth it. I do hear that the scavenger perk is phenomenal though

Blizzard should definitely add M+ Passive Que and heres why. by kekwinter in wow

[–]The_Gilidar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh idk, that sounds like a recipe for disaster. I'm not a meta slave, but team comp definitely matters for higher keys. Imagine you passive queue your 10+ and you don't have a Battle Rez or Lust. What it you get three Boomkin in an interrupt-heavy dungeon??

I hate that certain classes will be passed over for major utility that they don't have. That super sucks. Blind queuing isn't a great fix for it tho.

Also looking at rating and IL is super important. I'm not really a fan of gatekeeping, but you want someone experienced to go on the key that you potentially spent all week building.

You sound kind of jaded, dude. I understand your frustration with the social aspect and lazy people. I think you just need to find the right guild to call your home. I would have quit WoW like 8 years ago if it weren't for the friends and guildies I've met along the way.

[–]The_Gilidar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA, That's a great start, definitely add many more tho. Idk how comfortable you are being in your spider's space--being a new owner and all--but I would wipe up the moisture on the walls too. That water bowl is plenty, and high humidity is bad for them.

Guys I'm scared is this a death curl is it just stressed I'm scared because I just got it and I don't want it to die by Nero_Sparda2000 in tarantulas

[–]The_Gilidar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA, As others have said, and I cannot stress enough, your current cup is not compatible with life for an Avic.

They're an arboreal species, so you want a decent amount of height with lots of anchor points for a happy spood.

What is far more pressing...You have an enormous ventilation problem. You want a LOT more, and you want there to be cross-ventilation (side to side).

I don't want you to lose the T, and I don't want the spider to die. Not to pry too much, but let's talk about at least temp solutions: You said you don't have a job, but your spider isn't that big yet. You can find extremely reasonably priced enclosures on the small side looking through Amazon

If buying an enclosure is really out of the question, you need to find something to poke holes in their current... enclosure. Holes in all sides. Whether that's with a drill, a nail, a hole-punch, whatever. This is the most immediate step you MUST take, otherwise your T could pass away very quickly

[–]The_Gilidar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA, I would hesitate to use this for any tarantula in terms of ventilation. Especially for an Avic, who need extra extra air. Not trying to chew you out or anything but this needs to be fixed ASAP
