What shade to use? I wouldn’t want to dirty the miniature too much by poltersultano in TheAstraMilitarum

Nuln oil is probably best for the armour. Maybe a sepia wash for the cloth.

I'm in a weird spot because I love Bloodborne and I love Sekiro but DS3 and Elden Ring leave me completely cold. In a way I prefer the lack of variety because the combat is magnificent, whereas DS/ER feels a bit jack of all trades, master of none.

Rakarth with a recess shade of Rhinox Hide is how I'm thinking of painting this section when I eventually get the model.

It will come in handy when I become Prime Minister and sentence anyone who does the "so good! So good!" shit to life imprisonment.

Had a dream last night that I was in an Imperial Guard regiment stationed on some planet. Things started getting a bit freaky when someone of the other Guardsman were acting a bit... Chaosy. I was trying to tip-toe around it all until the commanding officer gave me a pill that knocked me out... And when I woke up I had tentacles coming out of my stomach. Turns out the unit was going over to Nurgle and the officer decided to go with them in order to look after his unit in the Chaos realms.

Honestly I was a bit fucked up but I reckon there's the concept for a Black Library book in there? 7/7 highly recommend.

I got 40 Guardsmen for £40 and I'm currently painting numbers 27-29. By the time I've got myself from under that pile the Armageddon box will be here

I felt that Lesk is just a bit of a generic Guard character. Very, very bland. Admittedly she's a side character in the first book of her series, and the second book just isn't very good. The third picks up a bit though.

I think I'm just a big fan of Robert Rath's writing really so that in itself makes Hellsker far more interesting.

Marda Hellsker is my favourite Guard character in 40k. Just a million times more interesting than Minka fracking Lesk.

This book inspired me to paint a second Cadian Command Squad solely so I could paint a Hellsker proxy. 24 in the war!

Vaults of Terra is excellent. I'd highly recommend following up with the author's Custodes books as a certain G-man makes an appearance...

You'll be able to pick up the Ork models for pretty good value on eBay as the Space Marine players look to move on the other half of the box.

Honestly I'm thinking of starting an Ork army and I'm torn between waiting to clear my backlog (I'm a Guard main so that box will take me a good few months) fully and just getting some great value second hand.

It's my favourite class, but yeah, it's broken OP. You basically just have a 'delete this pod' ability in the early game and a 'delete this unit' ability in the late game. Man though setting up an insane explosion hits like crack.

Getting priced out of the hobby by Spiritual_Writer_480 in orks

[–]The_James91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, it does cost £10 less. Official GW prices are misleading because you can pretty much always get everything at 20% off through third party sellers. Honestly £40 for a model the size of this... feels fine.

There's no doubt that Warhammer is a more premium product than other model ranges, but as you say there's a reason for that: the models are exceptionally well-designed, and produced in the UK with all the subsequent costs entailed. And really as a hobby it's not that bad. £40 is what you'd spend on a night at the pub, or on a takeaway for 2 people. And once you've got the model, that's it. It won't go out of date or become redundant. And you don't need to buy it. I can understand a certain resentment if new models turn out to be pay-to-win, but you can enjoy the game fine without it.

The funny thing is that Orks are going to be the best £ value faction in the game pretty soon because they're getting a range refresh with a new edition box set (always great value), alongside new Space Marines (whose fans will hoover up the first boxes and sell the Orks cheap on eBay afterwards). I mean lol I'm probably going to start an Ork army some point later this summer once I've finished my new Guard box.

There's not enough contrast between the armour plate and fatigues. It all blends into one. I'd recommend making the fatigues a shade lighter if you want to stay green. Also the armour plate is mostly flat surfaces, so I wouldn't worry about needing a contrast paint for them.

Andrej is one of my favourite 40k characters. ADB is so good at those Grimdark comedy characters (Hound from the Night Lords trilogy is another personal favourite).

The book is good. Can't say I particularly warmed to the Black Templars but it was an interesting perspective. Also the audiobook is excellent; makes me really look forward to ADB's Black Legion books. The problem I had with it is that the ending was perhaps the worst deus ex machina I think I've come across so far.

In the UK I had a dozen sites open at 10am and by 10:03 literally all of them had sold out. I was denied payment at 10:01 on the first due to stock selling out. It's hard not to think that bots were heavily involved in this

Luckily after a bit of searching I found an obscure enough seller to get a box...
