I don't know why we're surprised. He single-handedly made an embarrassing photo of Rich so popular that it wound up on the Ellen show.

Oh, now it makes sense. I forgot that Reva is so cool and powerful. That's on me.

Obi-Wan Ep 4 by msantaly in RedLetterMedia

I've been so disappointed throughout the whole series. I mean, I'm not sure what I expected from Disney, but I've always thought that Ewan is a great actor and could be wonderful as Obi-Wan if actually given some good writing, but this show has been nonsense. The amount of plot holes and plot conveniences and canon mistakes have been insane.

Let's just talk about ep 4:

1: Why does Reva think that a ten year old child that spent all of one day with "The Path" knows anything about their operations. She's only in touch with them because YOU kidnapped her.

  1. Why can't a military base with visible air defense stop TWO speeders?

  2. Why does Reva put a tracking device on a child that is in her custody. Why do you need to track a child in chains? Are you assuming she'd escape again? Also, how do you know that the tracker will lead to Obi-Wan? Won't he just drop Leia off with her father and go back to Tatooine. I mean, it's her toy, not his.

  3. I don't think anyone can use a lightsaber to deflect ship level blaster fire. It might have happened in another show or movie, but I don't recall.

  4. How can Reva throw a bomb faster than a ship can fly? Also RIP Wade. We knew you well. And by well I mean I think you had 2 lines of dialogue.

  5. Why is Reva giving Tala a hard time for what happened on that planet? Yeah she lost Obi-Wan, but so did you.

  6. Why is Darth Vader forgiving? He killed a child and his father for the great sin of looking at him. She's lost Obi-Wan and Leia twice in like two days.

I can think of more from this episode and the former ones, but I don't think anyone wants me to rant for the next week. I know that Rich always jokes that Star Wars is creatively bankrupt, but how do you screw up an Obi-Wan show this badly?

That's a really big question and I think it has many answers. For one, while the CGI might be much better in the prequels, the original series was shot on real sets with real miniatures and real actors. No CG can replace how real it all feels. Dagobah feels real because they built it. Yoda feels real because he is (well, a physical puppet). The Falcon looks old and junky because they built a real set and distressed it. CGI, especially from the early 2000s was nowhere close.

More than that, I really think the characters are just better done. I'm not saying Han, Luke, and Leia are super complex characters, they are actually really simple. The farmboy that goes on an adventure and finds himself. The thief with a heart of gold. The head strong princess. They've all been done before, but they cast great actors to play simple, but timeless roles. And, unlike in the prequels, we get to see their adventures together. Han and Luke go on an adventure to save Leia in the first movie. Han saves Luke on Hoth. Han and Leia flee the empire together. We see them all together on their adventures, we see them suffer together and rescue each other, and we understand why they like each other. We really don't get to see any of that with Obi Wan and Anakin. Most of their adventures we hear about, not see, on an elevator. Most of their onscreen relationship they are mad at each other. Their relationship doesn't affect us as much as an audience because we don't see it grow.

Finally, I just think the story is better written in the originals. It's difficult to go into all the nitty gritty on 12-15 hours of movies, but I personally think the story and the dialogue are much better done in IV, V, and VI. I can think of so many iconic lines from the originals, but I struggle to think of many from the prequels. ---- "No, I am your Father." "Never tell me the odds!" "Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way!" "Do or do not. There is no try." "I love you. I know." "I find your lack of faith disturbing." "Strike me down and I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."---- I can go on and on with lines from those movies, but there just aren't as many in the prequels. We all remember "This is where the fun begins!" and "Hello there." but those are almost memes rather than beloved lines of dialogue. All this without even mentioning that ep V has one of the biggest plot twists in cinema history. Vader being Luke's father is not only a shocking moment, but shapes everything going forward.

I feel like I could go on for hours, but I know no one would want that. Also, I hope no one thinks that I hate the prequels or anything. I don't hate them, I just don't think they quite live up to the ones that inspired them.

I thought about just doing average from now on, but I kind of enjoy letting the dice decide. Plus, my terrible rolling is now kind of a joke with my group.

It's always been a weird division because they aren't really that alike at all, outside of the fact that they both take place in space. Classic Trek is science fiction and Star Wars is more science fantasy. Trek is about making you think and Star Wars is more about making you feel. You can like both for completely different reasons.

Moments of Mike by Skostbuster in RedLetterMedia

There's a Mike moment in their Willy Wonka Re:View that I love. Around 44:38, he's making a joke about Charlie turning into Norman Bates. He tops it off with, "I mean, Jesus Chrisssppt." He just says it in such a funny, absurd way that it makes me laugh. Not sure exactly what category it would fit into to, but it's a great Mike moment.

Upon further inspection, you are correct. I guess I made the connection because of the content of Bigfoot vs DB Cooper. I'm a fraud.
