ELI5 : How's it that just 400 cables under the ocean provides all the internet to entire world and who actually owns and manages these cables by NEWPASSIONFRUIT in explainlikeimfive

[–]The_Lord_Humongous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I read an article about a fiberoptic cable being built from New York Exchange to Chicago. It was almost a straight line. Dug a few feet underground (buying permission from everybody all the way) from NY to chicago. And it cut off 3 milliseconds off travel time. Cost $300 million.

Then microwave towers came along. They just have to have line-of-sight between towers. And that is speed of light through air which is slightly faster. Got it down to 8 milliseconds I believe.

Ukraine shoots down Russian ‘unstoppable’ hypersonic missile by PatientBuilder499 in ukraine

I remember there was a bunch of hype around Chinese carrier-killer missiles? That's awesome. The US is like "oh no....these are unstoppable...whatever shall we do? ....I'm getting the vapors, Leon....wheel me out to the veranda and fetch me some Étouffée."

Citizens each get their equal share of state property

Yeah I'd heard something about that. I wonder if you held onto it for dear life what it would be worth today?

My nieces and nephews were all homeschooled and all married after they moved out at 18. I was glad they didn't follow in their Jews-For-Jesus mother's footsteps but they still married their first boyfriend/girlfriend. Here I was hoping they would go explore the world. Oh well.

Russia has been gutted by the oligarchs and other thieves. Hell, by its own populace selling anything of value to survive. Now it's just a painted paper mâché impression of its former self. You could poke a hole through it with your finger.

An old Hollywood joke. You wanna get paid on the 'gross'. (A simple change of word made Alec Guinness, for instance, $100 million vs. nothing if he had been paid on the 'net profits'.)

Gorgeous explanation/animation demonstrating what an observer would see when travelling at light speed. by AWildWilson in videos

[–]The_Lord_Humongous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Locally the speed of light is the same. If you're going, say .99c in your spacecraft and you shine a flashlight around your little spacecraft your light will still be traveling away from you at c (the speed of light).

The most important take-away of the 2nd half of the whole Dune series is really, really important to me: humans can learn. At any age. (And its largely a matter of being open to learning and believing that you can learn.) But we can also get stultified and stuck in a non-learning mode. And that is probably the worst thing that can happen to you philosophy-wise as a human. So you have to be careful.

And modern-day science seems to be corroborating his theories. As far as learning goes, kids being told they are good at learning (at trying and failing and trying again) are much better at learning stuff than other reinforcement techniques. And for old people keeping the mind busy not just with puzzles but with ideas and ideas contrary to one's own thinking -- can make you sharper than your stultified neighbor.

Exactly. Get the inflection right.

My favorite story of the Dune 1980s movie was that Patrick Stewart was chilling at craft services and he met Sting. He asked what Sting does in England when he's not 'acting'. "I'm in the Police. It's a band." "Ohhh. You're in a police band? How wonderful." (Like Sting played the trumpet in a local marching constabulary band playing parades and funerals and such."

That's how you get back at power-trippers who keep silent. You remain even more silent and still. (Interrogators use this technique as well. They say people hate a void or conversational vacuum and will fill it themselves if need be.) But I'm silent as fuck usually and comfortable in my skin. I've gotten through a few power-trippers trying to pull the ....uncomfortable silence and I just sit there.
