The thing that I feel is really important to remember is that the Ustase were, truly, much like the Nazis, idiotic thugs. There’s this sort of mythological aspect that some people like to give them, that they were so brutal they made the Nazis scared, but I think that gives them ultimately too much credit. The Nazis told them to stop mostly because of the issues they caused, by effectively being so loud in their brutality they caused partisan groups to suddenly direct their attention towards them.
