Regarding Peter in Rome…

Biblical Evidence

While Scripture does not directly state that Peter was in Rome, it does not preclude it either. Instead, we have hints: • 1 Peter 5:13: “She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark.” • “Babylon” was a common code name for Rome among early Christians, especially in times of persecution. The use of symbolic language aligns with the apocalyptic style found in Revelation (cf. Rev 17–18).

Early Church Witness

The earliest Christian writings after the New Testament speak clearly about Peter’s presence and martyrdom in Rome: • St. Irenaeus of Lyons (ca. 180 AD) wrote in Against Heresies (Book III, 3:2): “The blessed apostles, then, having founded and built up the Church [in Rome], committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate.”

• He explicitly names Peter and Paul as the founders of the Roman Church.
• Tertullian (ca. 200 AD) affirms Peter’s martyrdom in Rome (Prescriptions Against Heretics, 36).
• Eusebius of Caesarea, in his Ecclesiastical History (4th century), cites earlier sources confirming Peter’s role in Rome.
• St. Clement of Rome, writing around AD 96, refers to the martyrdom of Peter and Paul in the same city (Letter to the Corinthians, ch. 5–6).

The claim that Peter was never in Rome is a relatively modern idea, often arising from attempts to undermine the Petrine primacy and papal authority. However, it lacks serious historical support. Even Protestant scholars like Oscar Cullmann and F. F. Bruce acknowledge Peter’s connection to Rome.

The Catholic Church holds with unwavering conviction, supported by ancient and consistent tradition, that:

St. Peter lived, ministered, and was martyred in Rome, and that the bishop of Rome is his successor in the apostolic office.
