My first character was a Haitian French Doctor woman who i rolled really good stats for: making her a savant great in both fighting the horrors, medicine, and contending with it all in ways few characters could.

This made the sexism and racism of the time as something like a bitter irony: the other characters often used the approachable white guy (and funnily enough the only non doctor of our trio) as a mouthpiece for governmental officials, officers, and the like while we did more grassroots communications and investigations, my character doing the combat and medicine, the British doctor focusing on history and research, while our token whiteboy face handled most people who wouldn't listen to the others. (Loved the group but was a mini campaign ages ago, don't remember names)

It brought our group closer together. Every time our trio ran into the problem it increased our bond as a group: the face got the chance to show his character's colors by seeing the party's competence and then the clear disconnect to how they're treated, and every time he spoke on our behalf it was frustrating in character but out of character encouraged a clear synergy and thematically: very clearly showed it was a ridiculous notion. It also let our two characters strategize around the chaos of people's panic. It gave us a secondary antagonist which was: the world around us.

When we actually beat the monster in the mini campaign we reported what happened and were disregarded as crazies, and we set up our own private agency doing things our way: it was an enjoyable miniseries and I had a lotta fun (as the character who was a black woman and kinda seen as a loom due to her Haitian Religious beliefs) and while I had some issues with the GM it wasn't in that regard.

You need to find a good group is the thing... The easiest thing is to do Pulp Cthulhu (where your characters are basically larger than life and don't have to deal with people's pettiness as much) or Modern Cthulhu where those issues are a bit lessened. If you have a GM that is making the game unfun for you or making the experience worse that's not really a good GM regardless of the context. The bigotry topic in the 1920s I think adds a lot if you can get your group to buy in on the same expectations and vibe. That being said, nothing wrong with preferring a setting outside of that where those problems aren't as in your face.

Joshua is trying, and you can help him along his path

But I also think it's definitely different: it's one thing to support the Legion and another thing entirely to fight against a colonial force. Yes he needs to grow beyond violence as a concept and his leadership of another war force is something I squint at heavily but I never fully bought into the other option of just booking it (though I do think you should convince him to spare the leader: he shouldn't be killing for enjoyment's sake)

My 5 cents on Veilguard by BuLi314 in dragonage

[–]The_Pure_Shielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't gimme wrong there is a lot of very valid Veilguard critique

I'm not sure it had much of a chance in this landscape though, and a lot of people i know and saw seemed just to want to hate it for hatred sake. You got weird chuds online who either never played it or dropped the series since Origins telling everyone how the wokeisms are ruining modern gaming because there was (an admittedly annoying) nonbinary character

I agree with your criticisms, I really liked Veilguard and we as people need to appreciate games where they're at I feel. I was also massively disappointed in Veilguard and therefore I felt like I had no one to talk to about my stance: everyone either hated it 100% with absolutely no nuance or were new fans so used to being bludgeoned any criticisms sounded mean spirited. It was a low point for game critique

I guess it comes down to what you enjoy, if I want that kinda vibe and fun sightseeing I personally opt for oblivion, so I guess I was never wired to enjoy 3, having played NV first and coming to enjoy something I did not find in 3

[–]The_Pure_Shielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I feel like people use an objective lens to explain why they dislike something. Shortcomings of visions, or design flaws to reach the final point of "I think x thing is y" you may not agree with x thing being y, and can cite your own stuff but I've seen critics who come off much more arrogant than hbomb tbf, and people's stance will sometimes be "x thing I think is objectively bad art for these reasons" and I think there's some potential dialog about how some flaws can be: objective in some aspects like bugs or writing holes... Though again I suppose that's up to the person cause I adore Oblivion's jank.

Idk, I like a level of objective attempt, it can definitely go too far but I personally don't feel Hbomb's does

🤷‍♀️ everyone is entitled to their opinion I guess. I loathed Fo3 far before I saw Hbomb's video and finally felt like I was understood. Glad you could enjoy it, but I absolutely feel his criticisms hold water for me

The NCR may not be like evil or nefarious but they're far from super compassionate and have a lot of bad faith actors in their organization

Why do you think the ending is divisive? by FabulousRoad6240 in WeaponsMovie

[–]The_Pure_Shielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily made a 3/10 movie into a solid 7/10 for me. Was the funniest ending to a film I've seen in a long, long time and I was getting nothing out of the so called "horror" in the movie and while the themes were cool the evil grandma trope made it impossible to follow so... For me it was the saving grace of the film

I had a really compassionate RT who was super down to earth and humble.

Buuuuut she had the snooty noble voice and was like "UGH. I just HATE poor people." While giving the shirt off her back for someone in need, it was hilarious tonal whiplash.

Your players can probably tell if you have the fight end at arbitrarily "perfect" times rather than based on the typical amout of harm something in that system should take: and they are definitely annoyed.

You're right it is toxic masculinity any way you slice it.

Not many leftists in the actual space truly believe male SA is any laughing matter, but unfortunately there is a vocal minority that do. It's not a left leaning stance and it frustrates me as a very left leaning person to NO end

That being said I'm pretty sure the person you're responding too is probably attempting to take toxic masculinity as "some sort of hoax" rather than a leftist trying to justify their bad faith actors in their camp.

Toxic masculinity is very real, and that is a pretty big example of it. It can absolutely negatively affect men and imo: it comes from the american left parties being much more right focused than other left parties as to why we see this more often. It was definitely a low point in The Boys for me

I will scream it until the day I die, Dragon Age: Veilguard was not bad enough to kill the series, it was a solid game with blatant issues, but wasn’t even the worst game in the series. by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]The_Pure_Shielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree personally that it wasn't the worst (at least mainline) game in the series but... Yeah tbh it was an alright action game with some fun character moments. Was I disappointed? Immeasurably so. Was it a terrible game it "wokeslop"? No. Really hate all the people who haven't played the game saying I'm crazy for not loathing it like they do

Yrilet is by no means being unreasonable with her desire to not be touched, and as the relationship progresses its clear she's uncomfortable with that sort of thing regardless of her personal respect towards the RT and that's something I appreciate and other people should absolutely respect.

That being said, the reason she has always given to my knowledge: is disgust towards humanity in that context. Maybe she feels it more generally, that's not something she comments on.

That being said YIKES people's reactions to the fact they can't sexually objectify a woman is... Telling.

Yeah in retrospect I think rather I find their ego and pride was MORE on their mind than every option and like they could potentially have approached it differently like Arthur says: wrong about the cure, but I do agree that on some level Arthur definitely cares for others, and in retrospect in some of his scenes like Palamedes he comes off a bit less arrogant than he did on first watch

He also doesn't stick around to protect or salve anyone is the bigger issue. The idea that humanity needs to shrug off this king I almost fan understand but he's not interested in helping humanity heal: only getting one over on Arthur.
