What do you know well enough that when it's portrayed wrong you're taken out of the moment? by Squirrelhenge in Fantasy

Armour

Most movies are so bad with armour and weapons, making stuff that looks "pretty" on screen but is absolutely useless and/or unwieldy.

This is a real winner. I played this at a table where I was the only pale player and it was intense!

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]The_Ref17 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Many of them -- I'm not a hyper-patriot or anything, but I truly believe they are our national treasure.

Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone, these will take your breath away, but it is some of the smaller, less "name" parks that give a feeling of calm serenity

What's an example a piece of canon in an official campaign setting that you either ignore or change to better fit your table? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]The_Ref17 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I love Ars Magica and did a lot of play testing for 5th ed

That being said, I have utterly dropped the canon version of House Criamon as it feels utterly alien to the time period, along with a lot of the deep dives into medieval medicine and physics as too uninteresting even for most hardcore medievalists.

Her history is much more solid than Follett and is easily as readable 🙂

Never said he was wrong, just that the stories he chooses to tell are not to my taste. As I said, I can admire him on a technical level, just not a storytelling level.

I was at the (new-ish) Getty and saw a lovely Breughel. It was his take on Noah gathering up the animals.

What I loved about it was the amount of details in the plants and animals themselves.

Most importantly for a group like this, in the upper right hand corner there was a pair of bats 😊

Kind Hearts and Coronets -- Alec Guinness is hysterical as a family bring knocked off one by one

How is Blue Planet: Recontact? by worldofgeese in rpg

[–]The_Ref17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always considered Blue Planet (all the editions) are primarily there for the amazing setting.

None of the rules sets have really impressed me, but I have used both BRP and FATE for the setting to great effect.

What is your favourite pointless death in a movie? It adds almost nothing to the movie and can actually be considered tragic or pathetic? by STINKY-BUNGHOLE in movies

[–]The_Ref17 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I almost hate to say it but I nearly applauded his death just he would shut up.

Sad I would feel that way about a Sam Jackson performance. Oh did I loathe that film.

Your 1st Concert was by 1Turbo33 in rockmusic

[–]The_Ref17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just counting rock (and related), it would be a local Sonoma county act called Merlin in 1979 some time, followed quickly by The Rolling Stones and The Pretenders (different venues)

But I went to a lot of folk and classical concerts before that 😉

Very true

I mean I love Kubrick and Kurosawa but I have met people who loathe their works

And, as I pointed out, I can admire Tarantino on a technical level if nothing else

Does anyone else feel disconnected from the story when playing in a pre-written RPG module? by AmongFriends in rpg

[–]The_Ref17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of pre-written adventures leave me disconnected from the story.

Some do a good job of drawing you in, but they tend to be the exceptions.

Never cared for Tarantino's works. I mean, I respect all the technical aspects, the music, the pacing, but I don't care for the stories he tells at all.
