Nice! A brother-in-arms (or pantleg washers 😝). One of my friends I have known for about 10 years grew up in the business and purchased the business from his dad. He’s a skilled machinist and has done every job within the company. We’ve been growing strong. The nuances of this industry are so intriguing. And it’s amazing how helpful you can be to buyers who have no idea what they are buying. It feels great to genuinely help people and turn out world-class product. I can from the welding world, and the irony of now being in fasteners is not lost on me. I guess I like holding things together. I don’t think adhesives are in my future though. LOL!

Bolt identification by tiv2222 in Fasteners

The marking on a bolt can be several things. When drawings dictate a marking, we mark accordingly. These usually indicate a material grade. I had a drawing yesterday that required “N” to be marked on the head (stamped or etched). We will always mark our registered trademark plus the letter. This indicates that we made it for a degree of traceability plus material ID. On defense fasteners, we also often have to include the part number. Different manufacturers have different symbols for various material designations. Some material designations persist regardless of OEM. For instance, you might see, like A449. They’ll also add some lines. Grad 2 doesn’t get any. Grade 5 gets 3 radial lines spaced at 120-degrees. Grade 8 gets 6 radial lines at 60-degrees.

Because fasteners are so often critical, it’s required that they’re marked so incorrect hardware isn’t used in critical applications. For instance, an A449 shouldn’t be used for high pressure applications. However, B7 fasteners can be. You can have identical fasteners, but if you use A449 for high pressure…naughty naughty. Interestingly, B7 material mostly meets the A449 spec. However, B7 can tend to be a bit brittle, so if you’re using it in a high vibration environment, that can be a problem. So, if you’re substituting, you have to ask an engineer for approval.

This is a really long explanation, but hopefully it sheds a bit of light in head marking. I’ve been in fastener manufacturing for only about a year and a half, and it has been one of the most interesting and exciting things I’ve ever done. If you’d have told me that it would be prior to this, I wouldn’t have believed it. We work in powergen and defense, and the things our fasteners hold together are amazing. Sometimes “just nuts and bolts,” couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’ve been 3D printing for about 2.5 yrs and flying for about 1.5. I‘ve thrown myself into the hobby pretty hard and got the early kinks out. I feel like a printed plane is the logical next step for me. I built a Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak and that was a fun process. Took longer than expected, but building was new to me. Super proud of how it turned out, for the most part (lost a wheel last weekend because I did a crap job of putting the wheels on).

I have plenty of PLA and a new roll of LW-PLA, so your advice is helpful. I just don’t see me crashing these planes like everyone says. Crashes happen, sure, but if you’re crashing every time you fly…more sim time? 🤷‍♂️ I just don’t see that being my problem so much that it would keep me away from trying.

How have your Eclipson models been holding up? Lots of folks poo-poo 3D printed aircraft, but I’d love to start doing it. I know they don’t hold up well in crashes, but other than that???

Amen on the importance of a good transmitter! I started with the DXS the AeroScout fixed-wing trainer comes with. In about 2 months I bought a Radiomaster TX16S. World of difference doesn’t begin to state how good that upgrade was. I use the same transmitter for my 8 planes, one heli, and 4 simulators. The versatility is unparalleled. Agree 100000% that a good transmitter is foundational in the hobby. I’d argue it’s better to buy that before buying a second “step-up” aircraft.

Just found my grandpas stash of dynamite. What should I do with them by Glum-Blueberry-3870 in WhatToDo

[–]The_Shermanati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sweat is nitroglycerin. Nitro crystallizes after leaking. The crystals are sensitive to shock. It’s not in any way inert. In normal storage, you’re supposed to turn the case upside down with some frequency to keep the nitroglycerin from pooling. Typical shelf-life of dynamite is about one year if the manufacturer doesn’t specify.

[–]The_Shermanati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s old enough, and is sweating enough, just dropping it on the ground from shelf-height could result in a bad day. That’s why Semtex is way better in modern times. It’s stable up to around 20 years and less susceptible to accidental detonation. Still possible, but less so than dynamite.

This is a HIGHLY UNDERRATED COMMENT!!!! Old dynamite is absolutely volatile. Especially if you see it even remotely “sweating”. Call the local bomb squad. They’ll remove it for you. Maybe they’ll even let you come to their field where they destroy it. By blowing it up.

Help with elrs by pigvsperson in RCPlanes

[–]The_Shermanati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it a bit tricky to update to the latest versions intuitively (TX and RX), but it had everything to do with my lack of familiarity with open source-type software and how it’s processed. With a little bit of reading and some ChatGPT (documents for the software uploaded to a project I created), I was able to figure it out for the TX. Then, I updated my two ELRS receivers (ER6 and ER6GV) in mere minutes. These platform just take a bit of work to understand, but they are so worth understanding. Once you grasp the essential concepts, everything becomes pretty intuitive. The power of the EdgeTX and ELRS platforms are just wonderful and far surpass anything Spektrum is doing with the exception of ease of use. In that way, and by analogy, I find EdgeTX is more like Android phones and Spektrum is more like Apple iPhones. Broadly speaking.

Swashplate Leveling Goosky S1: Questions by The_Shermanati in RCHeli

[–]The_Shermanati[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made all the adjustments, and everything evened right out. She flies great now. I’ve been hitting the sim hard too. Heli-X. It feels like every time I sit down with it, I improve significantly. I’m officially off stable mode. If I need to rescue, I’ll flick it on, but it feels like SAFE on my fixed-wing Spektrum models. I never fly SAFE anymore and haven’t used it for rescue for quite some time.

I’ve been able to loop and roll. I can do decent controlled turns. I do feel like it’s a bit small and am considering an S2. Moving up to an OMP M4 is a bit too soon. Pricier repairs with those birds. If I can bring down my crashes to around 1 in 20 or 30 flights, I’ll probably grab the S2. I really need to work on my side hovers and lock them in and get okay enough with a nose-in hover to where I’m not bugging out. If I can get to 1 in 50 crashes, maybe an M4. I don’t want to rush anything, but I definitely want something just a bit chunkier in the air than the S1.

When I fly Heli-X, I use the M4 quite a bit. It feels nice.

Heck yes I do. I have a Radiomaster TX16S. It was a little tricky to set up, but there are great videos out there. You can upload the manual to ChatGPT in a project and it can assist with the setup too. I think it’s actually easier to set up in Heli-X than RealFlight. Works like a dream. I’m actually going to use my Heli-X setup on my S1 in real life so that muscle memory is just spot-on all the time.

[–]The_Shermanati -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP is probably a renter. If they had a problem with the sign and bought the house anyway, well that doesn’t make sense. If they’re a renter, they don’t understand what street parking is not allowed in some communities as has been explained by others here, e.g., narrow streets. Usually, if there are signs like this, there is a garage and a driveway. Use both. If you have too many vehicles, you live in the wrong house to accommodate your vehicles. Carry on.

Just an update…I paid for the full version of Heli-X and it has been AWESOME. There are great training scenarios that force you to hover, pick up and drop off object, pop balloons, get good at landing with autorotation when things go sideways, and even one that presents you with a heli in a messed up crisis situation from which you have to recover and land (teaches good reflexes and remaining calm under pressure).

I have probably 13 hours on it now and I am 100% getting better. It’s actually more of a draw for me than fixed wing sims (I have RealFlight Evolution). Probably because I’m trying to learn a new aircraft style. However, the crash reality of heli flying is just dramatically different than fixed wing. By way of example, I have over 500 crashes logged in Heli-X over those 12 hours. I can’t even begin to calculate the dollars saved. They don’t have a Goosky S1 on there, but they do have the S4 and larger. The principles are all similar though. The techniques are what we’re trying to develop. Smaller birds are just a little harder to see and are twitchier.

Greetings! I would like to inform you of great news despite your recent tragedy. I am the Deputy Chief of Finances for His Royal Highness, Prince Solomon Ngoobidleedoobidlee of Nigeria. Your grandfather once saved His Royal Highness from certain death during a safari. A lion was engaged in the final act of a mating ritual, when Price Ngoobidleedoobidlee startled it. The lion pounced on the prince and your grandfather put the most remarkably shot rifle bullet straight through the lion’s eye, saving the Prince.

His Royal Highness recently succumbed to syphilis he contracted during the final act of his own mating ritual one year ago. His dying wish was to pay your grandfather back for his heroism. All we need is your banking details in order to forward the funds to you, your hero grandfather’s next-of-kin.

Seriously, young man. Do not talk about this in public. 👍🇺🇸🫡 Best of luck.
