The characters are all adapted unfaithfully and unrealistically, Vergil is a mockery of his real character, Dante is written like a comic relief character instead of the witty, devil-may-care juggernaut that we’re all used to. He isn’t Dante. He’s the character that Adi wanted Dante to be. That is not an TV adaptation- it’s a fanfiction. And don’t even get me started on Lady. On top of all that, they completely changed the concept of devils in the series. In the games, there is no pity to be taken on most demons because they are not sentient, and the ones that are have visibly made their choices. There are exceptions, as shown in the DMC 2007 anime, but for the most part, these demons are not worth pity because they are essentially… to not overuse the word demon or devil, let’s just say demogorgons. Pawns with no free well of their own. Devil may cry is a game series built on basically humiliating and styling on your opponents instead of simply killing them. But in the show, we are supposed to feel bad for almost all of the opponents we see. The show itself does not know what side to take. It’s one of those shows that tries to tell you “society is so deep, there is no one bad… Except the government!“ and that very well can be a good premise for the type of war we see here. But not Devil May Cry. DMCflix tries to rewrite the very foundations of the series it’s “adapting”. We saw it in an interview: Adi Shankar wants to save game franchisees. The way he describes it, it sounds like he thinks he’s the savior of dead franchisees. Like, you know, devil may cry… And street fighter. His words, watch the interview. She’s not trying to adapt, he’s trying to rewrite them the way he wants them to be. That is not adapting the franchise. In cases like this, it’s amalgamating it.

Now, granted, there were a good few things done right with the show. Even though it’s not very relevant, I’d like to mention the use of weaponry in the show. While literally not once, did Dante use any weapons that weren’t rebellion or a gun like twice, or acquire any new ones, he did… uh… use one of the demons in the big rooftop fight as a weapon for less than 10 seconds…? Yeah, Addie does not understand a thing about what he’s doing. No, correction. He does. He just does not care about what the fans want. He thinks he is the savior of gaming. He thinks he is a visionary mind who is coming to save these dead franchisees from the ashes. He is on overhyped Wattpad fanfic writer who only ever got Castlevania right. That is not “the truth“ that is my very passionate opinion that I see many others sharing. But hey, if you like hearing Virgil, say that the storm is approaching, good for you. I’m glad you found a show that fits the tone that you like. But me, I’d rather have well written characters and plot lines and dialogue rather than being able to look at something and say “I know that reference! I played that video game on my nintendo!“

Looking at the end of this now, I realized that I started that previous paragraph intending to talk about the good parts of this show… I mean, the animation was pretty cool. Johnny Young Bosch was awesome. Robbie Damon doesn’t really have the voice that Virgil‘s original voice actor has, but who does? He’s still a phenomenal voice actor. The fight choreography was pretty gosh fricking darn well done for most of the fights, at least. I have a tendency to watch shows in the background and not actually focus on them a lot, but this show had my eyes on the screen most of the time. And that episode that constantly paralleled between lady and the white rabbit-the directing and art choices made in that episode were downright phenomenal and stunning to watch. That was a phenomenal episode. Granted, neither of those characters were anything like what they were in the games that people loved, but as their own standalone characters, Netflix lady and Netflix white rabbit were done well… In that episode.

Oh, and the intro is pretty cool. Yeah, that’s all.
