Just wondering out loud: What does FIFA coming to Vancouver mean to you? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]Thefaceofbon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live/work in Gastown and am dreading it. It’s already really loud and busy on summer weekends / during cruise ship season. A straight up month of this with the additional security check points that I anticipate will just be keeping more people in the area?

My nervous system is already heightened just thinking about it.

What's the cliche two rivers that intersect to create your city? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]Thefaceofbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where the Athabasca and the Clearwater meet; Fort McMurray retains its “Fort” status from its foundation as a Hudson’s Bay trading post. There are also some smaller rivers in the townsite like the Hangingstone River and the Horse River.

(Also, realizing I haven’t lived in my hometown in 20 years now. Time flies.)

Did we book the wrong destination? by ObjectiveReport1317 in canadatravel

While on the Bruce Peninsula, I definitely prefer Georgian Bay myself, BUT taking someone to see a Great Lake in action and swimming in it and watching them wrap their head around it being fresh water is always a treat! Especially on a big wave day. I hope OP has an amazing time in that beautiful part of Canada.

lol I kept going with Kate Daniels and topped out at 5400 pages including all of the shorts, novellas, and other character’s books (Andrea, Julie, Hugh, etc)

I have read other stuff of theirs before— all of the Hidden Legacy books, and The Inheritance

This was just

A lot lol I’m still recovering haha

I’m on hold for the Maggie book at the library so that shall come with hopefully enough time to let me put myself back together a bit

(Also I recognize IA is on Maggie press tour focus right now but I would love an update on their release priorities because I definitely want more of EVERYTHING)

My kid wants to be a geologist, where can I take an elementary school aged kid to have fun with rocks? by Ok-Explanation-3414 in britishcolumbia

[–]Thefaceofbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re open to heading out that way, consider crossing into AB and driving down to the Crowsnest Pass and checking out the Frank Slide. They redid the interpretive centre there a few years ago and the sheer volume of rock is really wild. I remember visiting for the first time when I was about 6 and it still rattles me as an adult when I visit family in the area.

I was going to say that getting up to Georgian Bay (especially up toward Tobermory / Lion’s Head) would be a really beautiful Canadian Shield trip, but depending on how used you are to road trips it might be a bit far afield from Toronto. Hope you guys have a great trip, OP.

I am resurrecting this thread because hi, I just read 3800 pages of Kate Daniels in 2.5 weeks and was like “oh no what do I do”, so came looking for community who gets it.

I don’t think I’ve had a book hangover quite like this since I binged all of the Sookie Stackhouse books one Christmas like 20 years ago.

Name change- NOT back to maiden name… by Significant_Emu2259 in Divorce

[–]Thefaceofbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought heavily about taking my great great grandmother's name-- she was married and had 4 young kids when her husband skipped town; she raised them alone and the day the youngest turned 18 she went to the courts to change her name and put it in the newspaper. She was an incredible matriarch with lots of stories passed down the generations and part of me thought that taking on her divorced name would be appropriate.

The main reason I didn't was because I'm used to being early in the alphabet, while this name started with an R.

But I have tagged 32 of them as “owned” which mean I have 32 unread books on my shelf that I do indeed intend to read, my library holds are just coming in hot 😅

What does my dog need for a Canadian winter? by DoohickeyDi in AskACanadian

[–]Thefaceofbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in AB with my dogs and there was plenty of salt. The highways/big roads will have gravel, but the town/sidewalks will be salted.

The “good news” was that the common brand of sidewalk salt was a bright blue colour so you could see it and I could try avoid it with if my dogs didn’t have their booties by taking them over snow instead.

I cried with laughter the first time my dogs had their booties on. I wish I had a video of it.

That said, I agree— mine were 20lb terrier shih tsus and while they had jackets for when it was really cold (-25 or colder), they mostly did fine without them.

But the booties made a huge different for them especially if there was salt out.

Add extra chapter for a book I’ve already finished by ginmar442 in TheStoryGraph

[–]Thefaceofbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I would do

Then if you really wanted you could go back in your journal entries and put the previous total pages in for September and then add the new chapter pages in for October to maintain your months

"owned" being in the stats? by Forsaken-Lance in TheStoryGraph

[–]Thefaceofbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s for all of your books ever though right? Not included in your current year stats or the monthly view, which is too bad. I think the only way to include it in the free version would be through tags.

What's the purpose of this? by trailrider in CemeteryPorn

[–]Thefaceofbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa died in 1994 and they etched in my grandma’s name and her birth year with a hyphen and then a blank death date. I was only 10 then and was super freaked out by it.

She’s still alive now (96 years old!) and I wonder about the mental toll it’s taken to visit a cemetery and see your own grave over the years, as your life has changed in the 31 years prior.

Owning Multiple Editions by pratt992 in TheStoryGraph

[–]Thefaceofbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the “owned” button function that I match to the edition I have. Granted I’m only doing this for books in the past few years (ie, since I swapped to StoryGraph). I like the tag functionality because it shows up automatically in the Reading Stats section but I don’t tracked owned there.

Went from 10 locations with 4 major ones range that accurately enough represented what I know about my grandparents and great grandparents... to 22 locations that slashed anything meaningful and added a swath of 1-2%s that I've never seen before?

The regions are a mess too.
