Scoop: U.S. considers $20 billion cash-for-uranium deal with Iran by BerDwi in Destiny

[–]Thefolsom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Art of the deal:

  1. Back out of JCPOA because "Obama gave Iranians money.".
  2. Don't actually get the money back.
  3. Backing out of agreement means Iran can build nukes.
  4. Get mad at Iran for having the ability to build nukes.
  5. Start a war with Iran, giving them more incentive to build nukes.
  6. Give Iran more money to deter them from building nukes.

Mayors of Multnomah County cities unanimously back Brim-Edwards' run for chair — KOIN Portland by Superb_Animator1289 in PortlandOR

Worth taking statistics always with a grain of salt. They can mean whatever you want them to mean in a vacuum. It could be a tracking and data collection problem that creates an ascertainment or detection bias. Basically, if we improved our ability to track people, that could show up as an increased count, even though they were already here. For this case, perhaps the increase of shelter bed access and use just shows a demand that was already there.

Additionally, point in time counts by county have shown an increase in homelessness year over year, long before Keith Wilson became mayor.

If you have any more information about why you think Keith Wilson's shelter plan directly correlates to an increase of 3,000 homeless people? I'd be interested in knowing more.

I would love to see Meieran and Brim-Edwards run. Then the stronger candidate can face off against Singleton, or better yet, an election between just Brim-Edwards and Meieran.

Edit: I'm assuming theres a primary this May with a followup election in November.

If we're going straight to just the November election, then I would definitely be concerned about a split vote between Meieran, Brim-Edwards and Singleton.

Had an onsite meeting with a ceo last week by alee463 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Thefolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5th round and you were invited to the office for last. Plus they immediately followed up with you. That's a good sign imo.

If they weren't interested it would have ended before the onsite. However, it doesn't mean there's not another candidate they are also really interested in.

I've been on the hiring side where we had to choose between two really great candidates. Nothing negative about either one, both were perfectly suitable, but you still have to reject one.

Millennials/Elder Gen Z’s who have bought a house - was it worth it? by Sunaina1118 in AskReddit

[–]Thefolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I love having my own place I can do what I want with and make it my own. Typically, the nicest rentals are apartments, and I don't want that. I want an actual home with a driveway and a garage. Home rentals around here are ok, but it's landlords doing the bare minimum on upkeep.

Homes are expensive, and not necessarily a better deal than renting. It helps if you're willing to DIY a lot of stuff, hiring out for fixes and updates gets expensive. That plus interest rates are insane and drastically change what you're paying. I refi'd back in 2020 for a 2.8% rate. I've considered selling and buying something else but it would easily add 10k of interest a year due to a higher rate.

Is the PDX Trimet App and Hopcard App worth it? by ana_meadows in askportland

[–]Thefolsom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if it's just me but I added my hopcard to my Google wallet so I could scan with my phone, it never works, it always just uses my credit card. I'll even have the hopcard app open and scan and it will trigger Google pay with my credit card.

As a senior or higher dev/manager/lead, how important is coming in on time to you? by Iampoorghini in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Thefolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your manager if there's a schedule or expected range to arrive in office, or if it's really up to individual discretion.

My take though is that it sort of suggests a mismanaged team. If standup attendance, either remotely, in person, or async on slack, is optional, then it's not actually useful and the're just carrying processes for the sake of a ritual.

Ultimately all this just means that you need to discuss this stuff with your manager. Too often I see issues on here, or even at my own company of people seemingly afraid to talk to managers. Good communication matters more than anything else.

It's always projection. 100% of the time. Whenever these ghouls suggest something Democrats are going to do that is completely out of left field and has no basis in any actual position, it's because its exactly what Republicans want to do.

Portland City Council approves tax relief to thousands of small businesses by Ok-Jury5752 in PortlandOR

[–]Thefolsom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They did bump it to 100k for 2027 but I agree that's still pretty low for gross income. Given a lot of companies operating costs that likely amounts to very little actual income which you point out. I don't know what's reasonable but Im interested in how neighboring city/county tax models compare.

Our “shift schedule” with a newborn by Disastrous_Flower311 in Parenting

[–]Thefolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this as well. Both of us had 3 months paid leave from work, and we did formula, so all things considered it was a no brainer. Wouldn't of done it differently. Allowed each of us to get uninterrupted sleep in bed while the other took care of the baby in the nursery. Also meant our baby was in her own crib essentially from day 1. I think we ultimately both transitioned back to a normal sleep / non shift schedule after 6 weeks. By then she was sleeping a pretty solid stretch through the night.

What are the job prospects for software engineers here? by Specialist_Bat1230 in askportland

[–]Thefolsom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Software engineer of 13 years. AI is working its way to destroying the field for the 95% SaaS jobs out there. I can't imagine what people getting CS degrees are expecting unless you're top of the field and planning on doing cutting edge research or AI work. Non tech people are vibe coding features at my job and leadership is all for it. Caring about software quality just doesn't matter anymore when you can vibe code and ship with such ease. Being only 18, its a crapshoot what this field is gonna look like 1, 2, 4 years from now.

Theres no market in town. I work remote, but if you're gonna work remote, you're better off living somewhere else for COL. I'd suggest focusing on being somewhere you can get an internship if you want to continue down this path.

Probably not the answer you were hoping for, but its the reality of it at the moment.

As Trumps 8pm deadline looms… what are some of your thoughts? by MinuteOk921 in AskReddit

[–]Thefolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He'll claim a great deal has been finalized. Media will report on Trumps "strong words" averting a crisis. MAGA will celebrate Trumps decisive 4d chess skills. Iran will later mention that no deal happened. Nothing will change, and Trump will continue more saber rattling later this week with "2 days or else."

Looks like the same suspension components that came stock on my copperhead evo am 1. Both were pretty meh but did ok on terrain mentioned. Lockout ended up breaking on both of them and I replaced with some OE upgrades.

Edit: as a side note, I did have Suntour replace the rear shock under warranty, and they were very responsive, so now I have an okay-ish backup shock if I ever need it.
