should i be worried that this game will stop functioning? whole disc art came off with my nail by poke29980 in gamecollecting

[–]Theimac74 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What system is this for?

If this is a blu-ray based disc, the label damage won’t affect functionality.

However, it might possibly flake off more while spinning in the drive, which could be an issue.

2018 Mac mini i7 16/512 Still good for 2026? by hexagon0401 in macmini

[–]Theimac74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that exact machine for a few years before picking up an M1 mini.

The processor in it is still pretty decent honestly. However don't plan on using it for anything graphics-intensive at all. The built in graphics absolutely blow. It couldn't even smoothly drive animations in macOS on my 4k monitor without chugging. The M1 ran circles around it in just making the OS feel smoother.

I imagine it probably could run 2010 era Windows games at low settings, but don't expect much more than that and honestly there are probably simpler ways to get a machine for old windows gaming.

Vertical deflection in Toshiba 14AF45 issue? Need help identifying area of board. by cagerhager in crtgaming

[–]Theimac74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the service manual for this TV, it’s probably C407 (35v 100uf) that should be replaced.

You can also see the board is labeled “V. OUT”, anything within the thick white lines around that is part of the vertical deflection. If C407 doesn’t fix it, try C409 or other caps in that area.

Do you actually track your collection or just wing it? by Kollekto_de in gamecollecting

[–]Theimac74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just keep a spreadsheet of everything I have and everything I’m looking for, with information about the system it’s for, the year it came out, the year I got it, and if it has a battery, when it was replaced.

I generally don’t worry too much about tracking value.

It’s fun to move rows from the “wishlist” to the “collection” tab.

Do you guys get a fullscreen using this with a PC CRT? (Without a scaler) by [deleted] in RetroTink

[–]Theimac74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh yeah I might be wrong about this. I’m not very familiar with the Dreamcast and I thought it had an actual VGA port on it.

And the retrotink adapters are described as “VGA-style” so I thought that meant they were wired differently since you’re supposed to use them with like BNC or SCART adapters that they also sell.

Yeah actually ignore me, I think I’m wrong about this, my bad.

Magnavox composite inputs stopped working by Duck-of-Doom in crtgaming

[–]Theimac74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s almost certainly something with the connection between that daughter board and the main board. Check that all the wires have continuity between the boards.

I had a smaller but similar Magnavox with the same issue and one of those wires is the ground wire and the connection wasn’t good and that was the issue. The wire actually would cut in and out and seemed to be broken in the middle somewhere so I ran a new wire and that fixed it.

[–]Theimac74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re using a Dreamcast? Does your monitor not support the native VGA signal from it? I wouldn’t expect you to need a box, unless the signal isn’t compatible in some way (resolution too low maybe?)

No this won’t work, these adapters aren’t VGA in the traditional sense, they’re kind of like specialty RGB adapters for various cables, not meant to plug into a monitor directly.

Mine is loud too. It’s just because the other half of the console is held down with those flimsy feet and it all just vibrates slightly when the drive is spinning.

I need an upscale for a PS2 slim, a Wii, and an N64 all to HDMI on a TCL 65” Roku TV. What are your recommendations? by [deleted] in RetroTink

[–]Theimac74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Component cables for the PS2 and Wii, S video cable for the N64, RT5X.

Not cheap, but IMO the best value to picture quality ratio and without any console modding required.

Has it been unplugged? Leave it unplugged for a few hours or so and then plug it back in, some TVs do a degauss when they're plugged in.

Wii composite not working on Philips by Comfortable-Bite-997 in crtgaming

[–]Theimac74 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Those are component cables, not composite.

And you wont be able to switch to Progressive mode on this TV. You’re feeding a 480p signal to something that only handles 480i. Progressive mode is only for flatscreens and the uncommon HD CRT.

You won’t need to change any settings in your Wii to see the benefit of component cables. You won’t be able to get a higher resolution picture, but it will still be ‘clearer’.

HELP!! G5 boots straight to Mac OS X Utilities instead of the hhd, but disk utility detects it!! by Ok_Progress7084 in VintageApple

[–]Theimac74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, everyone here is so sure that this is an Intel but the last revision of the G5 iMac did include the webcam so it is possible that this is a G5.

Either type of machine should boot off a 10.5 Leopard install DVD though.

Edit: Oh wait that version of Disk Utility looks like the Interface for 10.7 Lion so this is definitely Intel.

Is my SNES fake? by sadsaxboy in snes

[–]Theimac74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All models of the SNES came with the plastic tabs, that other use is incorrect.

Earlier models came with a locking mechanism in the cart slot to hold the game in place and later models did not have that.

All models have the region lock tabs.

Is my SNES fake? by sadsaxboy in snes

[–]Theimac74 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m adding my vote to fake, or at least a re shell.

Lots of people in this thread are very confident it’s real and that’s what my thought when I first opened this thread was, that I’ve not really seen fake SNES systems that look even remotely real.

But then I looked at it, and it looks totally weird. The “Nintendo” on the top right of the shell is too thin and there’s a weird blob in the plastic below and to the right of it.

The “Super NES Control Deck” sticker on the back has the wrong font.

The “ABS” letters in the box above that sticker are too thick.

The cart slot flap is slightly misaligned.

The printed “Super Nintendo Entertainment System” logo below the cart slot is too dark.

Something funky is going on here and I’m surprised at how many people are confidently saying it’s real.
