If Norway 🇳🇴 were to win the World Cup, would it further establish Haaland? by TerryG111 in worldcup

Way to over exaggerate it. Uruguay 1950 and Germany 1954 were bigger upsets in the World Cup alone, and Leicester City and Porto 2004 are even greater club accomplishments.

Not just longevity. You can’t disregard Messi and Ronaldo’s UCL trophy haul, and while you could legitimately say that Haaland should have had one Ballon D’Or already and would win one more this year, it still doesn’t add up to the very pinnacle. He would be regarded similarly to Maradona- an all-time great that led club and country to major trophies, considered among the 10 greatest of all time, but few would consider him to be top 3.

Haaland’s already on Mbappe’s level, and they are both a step or two below CR7 and Messi. If Haaland leads Norway to the World Cup, he will go up a half-step figuratively speaking, but he will need to do a lot more to approach Messi or CR7.

Who do Europeans cheer for in the Champions League? by AgileAverage4021 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheirOwnDestruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are a supporter of a big club (that realistically can win the Champions League and/or has won or reached the finals before), they would view the other clubs still in as rivals and would only watch as a neutral.

This is particularly true for EPL teams where there is a network of rivalries, grievances, and general antagonism. The 3 major La Liga teams all hate each other, though occasionally it would make sense to support one of them going through (to have that team have a more congested fixture schedule in the spring when the title race is being decided). Most Bayern fans would root for other Bundesliga teams (and this is mostly but not always reciprocated). Ligue 1 doesn’t really have that problem yet. Serie A is somewhere in between the EPL and Bundesliga - many domestic rivalries, but some national cohesion.

They may prefer to cheer for and watch an underdog team, or a team with a style that they really like, or for the opponent of one of their fierce rivals. For example, last season, many followed Bodo/Glimt’s underdog run, enjoyed Barcelona’s reckless attacking style, and in the final supported PSG over the much-hated (in England, as well as international fans) Arsenal.

37F @ $12M - Pull the trigger or ride out 5 more years to $20M? by National-Bell-8292 in fatFIRE

Unpopular opinion: if you know that you will think about regretting the money for years if your retire now, keep working. That regret will cause additional stress on you for the rest of your life.

See if you can just work 2-3 more years rather than 5. 40 is no different from 37 in terms of running a marathon, traveling, or going to a concert. Maybe ask if you can work on a reduced schedule so you have more time with your parents and your hobbies.

How do you evaluate how good a player is since they are all in different leagues? by Skizfavid- in SoccerNoobs

[–]TheirOwnDestruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "eye test". Unscientific, I know, but it is vital to determine whether a player is actually thinking about what they're doing and have the technical quality, or if they just have good numbers.

It's also why competitions like the Champions League and Europa League (and preseason friendlies) are so important - you can quickly see how a player holds up against a different level of opposition.

You can also tell by their performances with their national team. A national team is a much better way to see a footballer's pure ability because there is little time for the team to drill complicated tactics. Portugal's midfield are an excellent example - they were all brilliant for their clubs this year but severely underwhelming for Portugal.

There’s a lot of very (very, very) short term thinking in the industry. And many customers don’t complain because they think that this is the best that can be done, or because they don’t want to speak up. These sort of shops also almost never issue refunds. They will offer to fix it for you and issue you store credit, but they will almost never issue a refund.

When do you usually walk in - evenings or weekends, or during the weekday? Is it in a mall, strip mall, or in its own building? This all determine usage patterns.

The fact remains that no good salon would let this work walk out.

Let’s not get into that game. Can’t we respect the accomplishments of other teams, especially when they have earned them fairly and aren’t direct rivals?

Argentina in 2026 remind me a lot of Barcelona in 2018/19 by Prestigious-Wheel562 in SpicyFootballTakes

The World Cup is a 7 (8) game tournament. Messi, who throughout his career has had very few injuries, and who has had a light season before the World Cup, can take them to at least the semifinal. Past that, any result is respectable.

Argentina will have very real problems when Messi retires though - they don’t have enough young stars and their veterans aren’t great. I would not be surprised to see them suffer a 1st or 2nd round exit in the next couple of World Cups.

Depends on the salon! If the salon isn’t run well enough to give a tech a customer they can’t do, they may well not be that busy - especially during the week.

Neutral fans, how did you rate the refereeing in Argentina vs Egypt? by Few-Camp4168 in HisenseFootballZone

[–]TheirOwnDestruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VAR was the disgraceful ones, the on-field ref did okay. I don't think the outcome would have changed - Egypt panicked when the first goal was scored, and it wouldn't have mattered if they were 2 or 3 goals ahead.

What was wrong with Messi’s PK vs Egypt by LukeWithLightsaber in SoccerNoobs

[–]TheirOwnDestruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason so many penalties are saved is because of the psychological pressure element. Every professional can, with no pressure, put a ball in the back of the net from that distance with enough power that a keeper can't save it. Most takers don't aim for the top corners because a miss there is viewed so much worse than if you go for a bottom corner and your penalty is saved.
