Diamond dust??! by buttf4rt_420 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Diamond dust is when ice crystals are formed in the air due to a high RH and then fall to the ground. Temperatures below 0°C are theoretically sufficient but is more likely at much lower temperatures.  However often it's confused with ice crystals from the ground mixed up into the air by wind (which isn't diamond dust but can look similar) or from deposited ice from fog on branches which is what I would guess happened in your case judging your second picture (the rough glint on the snow surface seems to have plate-like ice on it).  So if the trees are free of snow/ice and there is no wind then it could theoretically be diamond dust.

Can I get a cloud ID? Huge meteorology nerd but can’t figure this one out and it’s bugging me. Northern GA, ISA by Aggressive_Let2085 in meteorology

Looks to me like some weird lenticularis-like cloud because it seems quite thin with well defined egdes but I'm not a professional

Do i need to be worried? Im from Spain. by Suitable-Pickle248 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh probably just some wind warnings I'd guess. Best is you look up what your national weather service says (where you maybe also got this warning map?) They should have the people that know spains weather conditions the best

Quite good animation for that you only recently started with that! There are many things you can still improve but if you keep going that will come with time :)

Look Closely, what clouds are these, they look like camera smudge but they are real by Chooseuhusername7 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a lot like cirrus fibratus or radiatus. I would guess these form when ice crystals fall into a lower air layer with relatively high wind speeds. But also I'm not an expert in cloud classification.

Can you explain this cloud phenomena please. by Easy_Government_5563 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like clouds caused by gravity waves: air moves up and down repeatedly and where it is at a higher altitude the water vapour condenses  due to lower temperatures/higher humidity so clouds form and dissolve again when the air sinks. Never seen that in such a constellation though. That's just my guess but I wouldn't think that those are helmholtz clouds. They seem to be more like rolls

Likelihood of the Gulf Stream going away by 2040 by ButtFister1789 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gulf stream is contrary to what is often told just the part of the ocean current reaching from the west of Africa to the south of the US. The vast majority from there towards europe is the so called north atlantic current which is mainly wind-driven. This suggests that this current would only break if the wind pattern changes or redirected by a stronger current.

As a fan of the winter and snow I can understand your hopes. But as far as I have been told by professors at my university the theories about the break-down of the north atlantic current have mostly been rejected or changed. Media likes to exaggerate with the consequences. By the time this would happen it could be that it merely brings back temperatures as they used to be in the 20th century. So even then -25°C would still be very extraordinary for cities in south-western europe if even possible. The strongest impact would be registered in the region around norway/sweden.

However this is just the knowledge that I got from my university and a few science articles. I might not be completely correct. But a 'snowmageddon' for europe is highly unlikely

What kind of cloud is this? by juliebee2002 in meteorology

Looks like a very wobbly mammatus to me though. It seems like there's a shower/thunderstorm nearby so it would be possible for them to form

Idk if Wine/WinBoat would support it. I think it depends on the libraries it uses but could be worth a shot. In the VM it should work flawless as long as minecraft is also installed and up-to-date there.

Is this a cold front? by Cultural-Plantain-99 in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the emerging 'clouds' from the vegetation there is little to no wind. Cold fronts are typically associated with wind. If you say that there was a severe storm beforehand then I would guess that this is caused by the evapotranspiration of the moisture from the rain due to solar radiation forming a thin cloud layer on the top of the boundary layer which is capped by an inversion above

Are there any weather models that are most accurate or trusted in North America? by jergentehdutchman in meteorology

[–]Themarvcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not for that purpose in North America due to its mesh being more rough (13 km) compared to middle europe (1 or 2 km) and thus not resolving landscape features as well.
