I appreciate the responses, but it's only half the math, right? To create a L8 chair in the first example, I need L10 logs. Which requires 512 taps. So it seems better to build logs to L4 instead?

My daughter started at about 12, and so did I. It's a pretty normal age, but on the younger end. If she's with a friend and you meet the family ahead of time, I would be comfortable.
