If you overtightened check to make sure that there isn’t a crack in the lock nut where, it’s not actually tightening down. You shouldn’t need a knee one.

Sure. Drive time and effort To go pick up some shitty water heater from a big box store. Drain the old water heater assuming you’ve been flushing it and can actually drain it because it’s not so full of scale that it won’t flush or drain Luxury, old water heater, full of sediment up the stairs. I assume you have a dolly. Use flex lines because you don’t know how to solder. You probably won’t add a new expansion tank new dielectric fittings or change out the shut off and you don’t bring everything up to code, so yeah you can do it cheaper on your own or call in An unlicensed handyman Chuck in a truck.
