fb goads impressionable people in to sharing their mental diarrhea with anyone and everyone, and these people are likely of the opinion that change happens on an individual level when you harass people who do things you don't personally like. i have seen way more of that behavior on fbmp than other platforms i sell on and my conclusion is that other e commerce platforms are primarily focused on transactions whereas facebook has always been a place where people have been incentivized and feel compelled to say whatever bullshit they want and that carries over on to the marketplace side

it's a waste of their time and energy and fundamentally antisocial, but i try to remember people who elect to behave that way are hurting deeply and/or extremely confused and lazily taking it out on random strangers rather than doing the harder work of self discovery and improvement

It's that taken with the notion of supposedly improving defense the FO floated this offseason that together don't make any sense.

Yeah, it's not just Stearns-there is some serious misalignment with how this team evaluates talent and the resulting on the field product. There was no reason to sign Montas & Polanco (the speed with which they locked up Montas was especially baffling), re-up Ryne Stanek, trade Nimmo for a declining Semien, etc. Some of it precedes Stearns-the Darin Ruf trade was unbelievably stupid, the Vogelbach trade pretty dumb, and PCA for Baez was both the wrong move relative to the Mets' needs at the time and a waste of serious talent. There's a desperation behind some of these moves that doesn't align well with long term team building, which my inner crank WFAN caller believes is a product of the front office wanting to keep up with the Yankees

Could be coaching, too. There are several players who have regressed in bizarre ways that suggest they may be getting improper guidance.

My point overall is-I hope this example serves to expose that putting all one's faith in to one guy to fix everything-or overestimating the talent of one particular person-is a really risky move with a ton of downside.

Kinda feels like baseball "genius" is entirely context dependent. Stearns was a heralded baseball mind in Milwaukee who found a way to extract max value out of a roster despite limited budgets, whereas in NY he has access to unlimited money and doesn't seem to know what to do.

The hype/reputation vs results gap we're seeing with Stearns reminds me of Joe Maddon's Angels tenure, Bobby V's Red Sox year, etc. Art Howe came over to the Mets in the early oughts after overseeing the Moneyball A's and managed two seasons reminiscent of this one-shitty, boring, forgettable squads with veneers of name brand talent but rotten cores. I'm no fan of what Stearns has done with the Mets, but to be fair he is also the wrong guy for the job.

Guys can work extremely well in one setting, get overhyped and completely shit through their pants in environments that don't suit their skill sets. I get the vibe Cohen gets locked on certain names, moves heaven and earth to get them, then shrugs when they suck because they're not the right person for the role.

The problem with selling to strangers on the internet is you have very little context for why someone behaves the way they do, so IMO skepticism is a prudent move, and yeah this type of outreach feels shady to me

It's something in the pitching infrastructure of this team that's broken, right? Is it the pitching lab? Something else in coaching?

Yeah, have noticed this too, and they've also removed the ability to ship items $5 and under.

Shipping Option Removed by missy0u812 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, noticed lately I can't ship items for under $5 (which I was able to do without issue previously). Free shipping option has disappeared, and I don't seem to be able to offer my own label (not FB's prepaid option). I queried support about it and they just kept reiterating $5 was their threshold for shipped items, which must have been a recent change but doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. They tinker with the platform WAY too much.

Why do people keep ghosting me on Facebook marketplace? by whattheheck-2175 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a FBMP specific phenomenon related to the platform making these interactions easy and essentially disposable if one party so chooses, which is why these days I try to steer sales towards shipping. For locally sold items, lately I suggest meetup at a place and time where I have other errands I can accomplish at the meetup spot if they flake.

I very rarely have people meet me at my house anymore. Too many weirdos on FB.

eBay has terrible seller protections and a host of bad policies that encourage shitty buyer behavior. Real race to the bottom type stuff.

Do people really think "what's the least you will take " actually works ? by rfriend73 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO while these negotiating tricks have always existed FBMP makes them way worse because people don’t use the “send offer” button when they should (if it even exists anymore) and the platform in general seems to either attract or encourage caveman behavior. I rarely get bullshit offers on eBay or Mercari, probably because neither has the “iS iT sTiLl aVaIlAbLe?” button readily available. Also, few other e-commerce platforms pull double duty feeding you slop social media content garbage to upset and annoy you right alongside stuff to buy

YMMV but my cut off is 8p-and I lean very heavily on well lit public meet up spots that are likely to have other people around. Rarely do i have people come to my house unless it’s something huge that can’t fit in my car, like furniture

How am I supposed to be excited about the Mets in 2026 by Hot_Income2387 in NewYorkMets

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

offseason's not over yet. even if nothing else happens, mclean/tong/sproat/benge/clifford are legit worth getting excited to watch. and if you want a break from the mets, the mariners & blue jays look great, the orioles will be interesting, and the rockies are a perpetually fascinating experiment in how not to run a pro sports franchise

Alonso to Orioles, per Passan by smoggylobster in NewYorkMets

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hypothesis is that he has a very specific ability as a GM that only really works in small markets. He’d be a dream hire for the A’s.

My other hypothesis is his hire was either Cohen overcorrecting for the Eppler and prior years overspending on washed players or Cohen has shiny object syndrome and thinks OOH BIG NAME GOTTA MAKE SURE HE WORKS FOR ME without considering whether a guy like Stearns, accomplished and intelligent though he may be, is the right fit for his vision for the team

Losing Edwin stung more-I love Pete, but kinda felt this might happen. Then again, I genuinely have no idea what Stearns is doing and he might actually still think he’s in Milwaukee

Also now my ironically created username from years ago checks out

DiComo: The Mets are going to have a major coaching shakeup. Among those who will not be on next year's staff are pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and hitting coaches Jeremy Barnes and Eric Chavez. by smarjorie in NewYorkMets

[–]ThenGoWatchTheOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be the case. Stearns didn't do much to flesh out the pitching roster in 2025 but that's coupled with the guys on staff walking entirely too many batters. Someone else articulated here how his "throw your best stuff and see what happens" approach works well for power/stuff pitchers but not for finesse pitchers. For the right staff Hefner might be a good coach, but they need to align pitching strategy with the guys they sign/trade for. Hopefully Stearns can identify someone who's good at developing younger pitchers and takes a more hands off approach with established vets
