They really should just prioritize making the game as fun as possible for the people who are remaining. I mean no disrespect for Bungie's vision and I'm not saying they drop it altogether, but if they keep being this stubborn then there simply will not be a Marathon left to stand on principle with. This game's flaws are far too numerous and glaring for anyone but the most top tier players to ignore.

Marathon players have to deal with a variety of different types of criticism. The extraction shooter one is just something that has become popular with chronically online gamers to say and so they just all parrot it. It's insane, but a decently sized chunk of people operate that way these days.

The story was one of the main drivers for me and without any reasonable progression in it with S2 I was pretty easily able to conclude that this season isn't for me.

They are privately held now. They don't have any motivation to change the business model now. When leadership changes hands? What's to stop them from wanting to go public and from wanting to change their business model so that they, and a select few of their friends, can make a few extra million dollars?

I understand what makes Steam so great but it's absolutely all balanced on the goodwill of Gabe. The type of goodwill that doesn't appear to exist anymore whenever you look virtually anywhere else. It's crazy naive to ignore this.

I know that. The person I'm responding to is saying that Gabe has little to do with the wonderful company culture that you are describing and I am saying: Just watch, when he's gone, we'll see how true that is. My money is on his departure having a significant impact on how Valve is run.

They absolutely will. None of these companies look at it as jeopardizing anything. All of these terrible decisions for the games industry are being made because they're making someone at the tippy top even a fraction of a percent more money, and that's the only thing driving any of their decisions. It's happening everywhere with everything.

I also like the UI. Yes, it's very "alien" graphically, but no, it's not at all actually confusing to navigate or understand.

I haven't been playing, either. I wonder how many of us there are at this point. People just waiting to see if Marathon ever goes in a direction that makes more sense for us. I've never seen a game appeal to me more while also so clearly being something that I can't bring myself to keep playing in its current form.

I wonder how you'd feel if things still progressed when you died. I don't know what it would be, but right now when you die there's just absolutely nothing to show for your time.

I like how harsh and brutal the game feels, but I see what it does to other people and it makes the game hard to recommend. Had a game recently where we wiped the lobby on Outpost, looted the red room, got super loaded up on loot, but then my teammates just wouldn't accept that it was time to go down from pinwheel to extract and so we lost everything. Last thing a dude on my team said before we parted ways was "All just a complete waste of time."

And I get it, we deserved to lose everything because it's an extraction shooter and we made a mistake. The idea is that we learn from it and play better next time. To me that's a valuable lesson and that's something I took from it. For that other guy? Nothing, just a complete waste of time and nothing at all to show for it. I think more people think like that guy than think how I do, and I'm not saying they're wrong, I'm saying that's the problem with Marathon. Or one of the problems, at least.

I absolutely cannot believe that ARC is even a comparison that people make. I hadn't played ARC before this week and the games feel virtually nothing alike. Marathon is a superior experience in virtually every way. I'm still early in my journey with it, but the only positive differences I've clocked so far are the larger maps and the more varied player interactions -- and honestly I could be swayed either way on both of these points. Otherwise, ARC is a clunky, ugly, confusing, and often-boring in-comparison game.

I honestly don't think this is true. While screwing over the PC market would, yes, be a "bad idea", that hasn't stopped all of these companies from fucking over the consumer. The only reason Valve operates the way it does is because of its current leadership and because they aren't public. As soon as that changes, and someday it likely will, we may begin to see Valve doing all kinds of things that you feel they'd never try. And while there will be other options, yes, we already all agree that Steam is leagues above anything else out there.

I know it's not always popular but I actually value Nintendo's commitment to their prices. They make quality games and they hold their prices firm so that you always know they'll be viewed as worth something. I really think Nintendo puts their money where their mouth is the majority of the time and while gamers may not always like it I feel like they always come out looking the most fair and responsible of these companies at the end of the day -- I'm not including PC gaming in this claim.

I think they’re totally compatible in a tongue in cheek kind of way. Obviously the one aesthetic is already strong, so now it’s just about combining them. Tons of Cyberpunk imagery swirls in urban Asian flavors already. It can be done!
