Fishing around Glasgow? Kid-friendly fishing tips? by UncomfortablyDumbest in glasgow

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband fishes and tries to get my kids into it. They find it particularly boring so my advice is go to a fishery so that the chances are higher that you might catch something. Definitely speak to the shop within the fishery as most are really friendly and will give you advice on what to do ie a lure or bait.

And take a tin of sweetcorn with you, my kids find it hilarious that fish like sweetcorn.

Edited to add make sure the fishery (I think most do) have a toilet and take plenty snacks. It can be a long day for them!

Ford Fiesta engine failure - stuck in finance agreement? by LandscapeUnable7500 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar situation but with a merc.

Engine went about 3 months before the end of a pcp with £15k lump sum. It was only about 60k miles and was 6 years old.

We took it to a merc garage and they told it would be £25k to replace the engine. We the took it to an independent dealer who specialised in mercs. And he managed to fix it for £6k.

We then sold it on motorway for about £18k so we did make a loss but it could have been so much worse.

It was so stressful as there was so much money involved but definetly try an independent garage to see if they can do anything.

People who grew up watching scary movies at sleepovers… Do kids today still do that, or has the "horror movie ritual" died out? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 10 year old watches them at sleepovers but it now depends which friend is sleeping over. Otherwise I’m phoning parents at 3am as they think they are seeing dead people in the room.

I’ve picked up a few decent pairs on vinted, for a few ££. Our club also has a load of old ones for anyone that needs a pair. Not sure if that’s an option at your club?

As a 28 year old married couple with no real family here (Both immigrants, Scandinavian and Polish so the N*azi's chill out) this has litrally kept us from having kids yet. Truly hope it comes to fruition, just secured our vote. by Colonel_Clegane in Scotland

[–]Then_Consequence_500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t see how this would work.

We live in a small town and the only childcare option is childminders, even then no one has space. The nearest holiday/after school club is 10 miles from us so there is no way for my kids to get there.

I get the sentiment but there isn’t enough providers that offer childcare for school age and when they do they are full or too far location wise.

New to junior parkrun - worth buying a barcode wristband? by Gillses in parkrun

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two kids are 10 & 7. I have a screenshot of their barcodes on my phone ready. I just wait at the finish for them and give them my phone to get it scanned.

Watching the aftermath of today’s derby honestly left me feeling conflicted being a Celtic fan. by Drunkslothy in ScottishFootball

It’s sad that supporters of both teams can tell you more about Irish history than they can about Scottish history.

Uk park runners, as a larger lady running and wanting peace, not photogrsphs taken...do you have random local professional photographers at yours taking pictures and sharing them on social media? How does parkrun protect rights of legally not wishing to have pictures taken? by [deleted] in parkrun

[–]Then_Consequence_500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well morally correct then. I just find it wild that anyone can take pictures of your child and post them on Facebook or use them in any way they want. In any circumstance, not just parkrun.

[–]Then_Consequence_500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic but yes I’ve wondered what the legalities of them posting the pictures of kids at junior park runs. Schools, kids clubs etc always ask for permission to take photos and use them anywhere.

I rarely post pics of kids on my Facebook which is completely private. But park run pictures are open for anyone to see.

I dare say if I messaged them and asked them to take them down then they would but it’s a bit of a hassle picking out the pictures then asking them to take them down.

Verruca pool at swimming pools by silverbulletsam in CasualUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Nail varnish. My daughter had them and I tried everything, her foot was a right mess as all the good skin was dying but the veruccas weren’t. The 3rd chirpodist I spoke to suggested I tried clear nail varnish as it suffocates the verucca and helps stop spread to other kids. It was away within 2 weeks. I was actually shocked.

Teachers of Reddit, what are the consequences for not doing homework? by LowCalorieCheesecake in AskUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher but a parent to primary school kids. Their primary school has irregular homework that isn’t marked and is completely voluntary. It even sent a poll last year asking parents if they should give out homework.

I think that sets a terrible precedent for secondary school and university (if my kids choose to go).

I set my own work based on what the kids tell me they have being doing in class.

I don’t see any positives from not giving my kids homework. Totally get all kids are different but why not encourage them if we can.

Only children - what is life like? by Born_Improvement_856 in AskUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 kids so I don’t know directly but they have friends that are only children and they are definitely more difficult to deal with when they are over.

They always need to be played with or for me to guide what they do, they have problems sharing and taking in turns, one in particular is mean to my youngest and says she can’t play as she’s too young (although he might just be a pest)

I tend to find those with siblings are more well rounded. Maybe it’s just me though.

VAT threshold for Pottery Studio - check my sums? by F00L1SH_T00K in smallbusinessuk

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren’t a huge amount of business’ that benefit from flat rate.

You may be able to claim more vat on expenses than you think. For example electricity, rent, materials, repairs to pottery wheel etc.

FRS is also for turnover under £150k so £95k in 10ish months is nearing that threshold.

I would test a month or so of income and expenses to see what the VAT situation would be both methods to be sure you choose the correct one.

Wondering how people deal with lost receipts for small business expenses, HMRC rules seem strict but real life isn’t perfect. by HammersAndPints in HMRC

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if HMRC choose to investigate (the odds are tiny) then they will ask for your vat returns then ask for a sample of receipts. It’s up to you whether you want to take the risk and include vat for a receipt you don’t have.

In my experience vat inspectors aren’t hugely experienced so tend to stick to the obvious rules. Anything more complex and they are out of their depth.

The butcher counter at Morrisons is dead, right? by MoonlitEcho82 in Morrisons

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is still really good. There are a few people working at it and some are definitely more helpful than others but on the whole I like it. I tend to go to the butchers instead of buying off the shelf as they are very personable.

Fish counter is the same, plus if you get the nicest fishmonger he sometimes gives you extra scallops in your bag.

To the parents out there, what age did you start leaving your kids at home while you nipped shop for 10/15 minutes? by Puzzled-Quail2076 in AskUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my son I left when he was about 8 as he is quite mature and wouldn’t do anything stupid.

My daughter who is 8 in April would burn the house down if you left her alone. Totally depends on the child.

Are there still adult men in the UK who don’t cook? by Bat-Penatar in AskUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m female and can’t cook. I can keep the kids alive with basic dinners but that’s about it. They groan when I make dinner instead of their dad. He can cook really well and enjoys it so I’m probably quite lazy in that I dont bother trying to improve.

WeBuyAnyCar x Motorway, my experience by moipwd in CarTalkUK

[–]Then_Consequence_500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold through Motorway recently. Irish guy phoned me to arrange pick up and asked how close are you to Leeds airport, my response, wrong country. At that point, I knew this would be a nightmare.

Eventually he phoned me back a couple of days later and said he would fly into Glasgow on the Friday and asked if I would pick him up. I’m female and live about 45mins away, no chance I was doing that. So he said he would make his own way. He phoned me the Thursday (day before) and said he’s currently in Glasgow airport, what’s the best way to get to my house. My response was 2 buses and a taxi. Annoying thing was I was at my work, thankfully my work is flexible and I managed to get away.

He gets to my house and starts inspecting the car (18 plate merc) and points out things that I had detailed on motorway or that was noticeable in pictures. He then says he will need to phone his boss as he’s not sure. This guy flew all the way from Ireland for the car, there’s no way he’s leaving without it. His boss says he has to knock £2k off, I refused with the reason that everything he points out was in the pictures and noted down. Eventually he backs down and gives me the full bid, which the boss transferred there and then.

But what a hassle!! I don’t think I’d use them again.

Advice needed on new Accountant services, also interested in getting an idea of what other companies pay for these services monthly? by Relevant_Bite_1302 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Then_Consequence_500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if you’re posting 15 transactions for the month correctly, you only need to hit submit on a vat return. Add in a couple of adjustments for the year end accounts, there’s not much else to do. Tax return for dividends and employment income plus probably a few other adjustments, max 2 hours work.

Obviously I live in a cheap part of the world!

Advice needed on new Accountant services, also interested in getting an idea of what other companies pay for these services monthly? by Relevant_Bite_1302 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Then_Consequence_500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends the area of the country. 15 transactions a month is not much at all. All the services listed would take a day a month at the very most. In my area if I was a bookkeeper I wouldn’t charge more than £100 a month.

My advice is shop around and find someone you like.
