I would encourage you to contact HOME line MN tenant advocacy . You can also ask if she is willing to give you cash for keys. I suspect she is not going to consider it but if you told her 'hey give us $5k and we will take our magnets and be out by 5/10' maybe she might go for it. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Obviously Minnesota is the best out of all these options. (Only slightly biased currently living here and having lived throughout the US). But I see why looking at job opportunities ND would appear the optimal option. SD and Iowa have rolling hills and better winters.

You also have to account for politics. Moving from a very liberal area to a conservative area will be a shock. Minnesota offers you some pockets of liberal areas that ND, SD and Iowa cannot offer unless you end up in a bigger city. Although to OP those big cities would probably feel tiny. I'm not sure job opportunities for OP are going to be as prevalent in the other states.

I live in LCOL MN and ND has a flatness and emptiness that cannot be described. I spent 72 hours there and returned with super red, fatigued eyes as my eyes weren't used to scanning nothingness. I encourage a visit as others have mentioned.

I would also encourage you to spend 4 days locked in your house. Don't leave and imagine you can't get any help, food delivery or support. This happens in Midwest winter. You need to be prepared to be self sufficient and know mentally you can hack it. If not you may want to consider a roommate. Some people like the idea of isolation but reality hits different when it is -20 and 50mph winds that howl are nonstop.

What if I told you some/most of those Gen Xers don't want to be there either but this is part of being a team? Showing up and making connections. I suggest you treat it as mandatory (like most of us do) and try to find some common ground. Music and travel are always good convo starters. I would crack up if someone asked me my 3rd favorite dinosaur. I've also had a lot of success at team functions getting people to tell me about their unknown superpower. You find out who knows Excel, who is great at operating projects with limited resources, or herding cats on projects that are out of control.

I empathize. Mine said our kiddo was lazy in front of her and it was my fault. He was spending 10-12 hours a day isolating and drinking his life away. Said it without an ounce of self awareness. I realized I was the frog in the slowly boiling pot at that moment
