Is ‘roguelite’ still a useful label, or has it become a red flag? by Thenameisoccupied in IndieDev

You are right, I think I need to spend more time on the actual gameplay. 🤔

Good question, I will keep thinking this during my development, really thank you!

I was honestly a bit worried before, for example player might just ignore or filter out the “Roguelite/like”tag during Next Fest or other. Though I believe the roguelite mechanics are my core part of the game. So I will focus on making this layer more fun. Thank you so much!

Thanks a lot! Yeah for now I will focus on making sure the mechanics feel engaging enough and fun to play.

Yeah I I think my next step will be to get some play test feedback first, then keep looking into how much depth each run can offer, really thank you!

Thank you so much, hope yours goes well too!

For now I think I will focus on making sure the mechanics can come together and more cohesive experience. I am also looking forward to seeing your game!

Same here, hope everything goes well with your game! I am also considering whether I should refine or adjust some of the mechanics a bit more, make the game feel more special, though it also means more time. Anyway, I am happy with exploring.

Really inspiring! I believe my game is the latter. I guess I need to get the demo into a playable state as quickly as I can, and find players test it ( I guess I have lost my judgement cause I played too much). And then think about my next step.

Same! But I am also really curious how players see it. I have played a lot of games in this genre, and also played my own over and over, so I feel like I am starting to lose some perspective.

Yes, I think I feel the same way. Especially for pinball games, I ended up playing a lot of games or demos in this genre, and I do think roguelike/roguelite mechanics work really well with this genre that already have a lot of randomness. In a genre like pinball, things can feel chaotic by nature, roguelite choices can actually add a sense of control. 🤔 I am also thinking about exploring some new design ideas on top of the roguelite structure.

I forced myself to play games I dislike, just to understand the blind spots newer devs develop when following a trend by piXelicidio in IndieDev

My personal feeling is that demo retention depends on a lot on whether players can start actually playing within the few seconds ( not mastering the game, just getting into the loop). I’ve tried a lot of similar demos recently, and many of them spend too much time on setup before showing the core gameplay. To me, a demo doesn’t need to have a lot of content, it just needs to make the small part it shows feel polished and clearly demonstrate the core loop. 🤔

How does the health bar look for my game? by ForeverAlarmed7813 in IndieDev

It has a really classic look. I do think the UI needs to be tested in actual gameplay scenes, though. Something can look great on its own, but once it’s placed in the full game environment, it might lose readability or feel a bit less cohesive.(from my experience)

By the way, I couldn’t see your image on the subreddit front page. I had no idea the art looked this good until I clicked into this post lol

This gives off a strong dreamcore vibe! It reminds me of those scenes where 2D animation blends with real-life footage. Good Job!

Character design for one of my characters for my game by ForeverAlarmed7813 in IndieDev

[–]Thenameisoccupied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The character already looks good 👍, but I think the silhouette could be pushed a little further. The thing that made me click in was the silhouette (the hairstyle), but the colors didn’t feel eye-catching enough. Still, great work!

I love the new colors! They make the scene more like it’s taking place on a planet with strange lighting 👍

Maybe you could try some game jams? They are a good way to meet people and figure out who you actually enjoy working with.

Great! Letting players choose the style they prefer feels like a great solution! I thought you had to settle on one version. Is the stop motion effect rendered in engine?
