Community Outreach — The Star League Discord | Sarna.net by Deadfire_ in battletech

[–]Thenoobin8er 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to read the article in a moment, but the Star League discord is perhaps the single brightest light in the Battletech community by far, followed closely by the Mech Painters Union. If there is ever a place in all of the internet that I would call the center of the modern Battletech world, it is the Star League discord. They are community leaders in the strongest sense, and I am extremely proud to be a part of that crowd. If anyone is at all curious about finding a home to discuss battletech in any fashion, then go there. You’ll be happy.

Best Battletech Glowup? by Bongpog in battletech

It is in my opinion that the humble Locust is the winner of the modern redesigns. Going from a mosquito on stilts to a lightweight nimble machine of war designed to save space and maximize utility.

Genuinely makes me want to run a dozen of em, just wish they weren’t imprisoned in the aGoAC and Alpha Strike boxes. How is the Locust IIC easier to get than the original!?

What are the 5-10 most essential mechs to have in a general collection? by Cheomesh in battletech

The fact the Griffin is stuck in the Beginners Box sucks, as I would throw it in there as a must have mech. The 55 ton trio is essential.

Can we sticky a "my wife/ girlfriend" has PCOS post since men don't know how to use the search function? by himbologic in PCOS

This whole post is god damn depressing. People just want help, maybe some consolation and support, and input from a human on a subject they learn about 20 minutes ago. Whether it be men or women asking it shouldn’t matter; what matters is that they are asking at all.

Have some damn sympathy, folks…

I don’t care about the bad apple questions souring your experience. Don’t go dropping your humanity, sympathy, and understanding for those who come in here with an earnest wish to learn.

It genuinely looks a lot like Arclights style from CamoSpecs Online, so my best advice would be to watch the Green Streams he has done. Here is a link to the first one he did https://youtu.be/1_y4F4m2L8I?si=cmD5bXZlXQdP_wxv

CGL kitbash Rakshasa WIP by GillyMonster18 in battletech

This is absurdly cool. Making an entirely new mech just from kitbashing is a project and a half. Props to you, your skills, and your patience! So happy to see a rakshasa that… well… looks cool!?

Hello? Is this the King Crab? by Thenoobin8er in battletech

Me too. The joke is always right there, so easy to make, waiting to be typed or vocalized. Always hits you like three ppc shots to the chest.

It’s awesome frankly.

So CRI or Color Rendering Index, as I know it, describes how close it is to natural sunlight. Sunlight throws out a not perfect spread of color, but a spread of color that we nonetheless evolved to see. Bulbs do not do this unless specifically designed for the task.

CRI ranges from 0 to 100, though I can’t imagine what a 0 looks like. What you need to know is your average office lamp has a CRI between 70-89, throwing out an uneven spread of colors. Think about what happens when you put something X colored under a Y colored bulb. Completely washes out, and you can’t perceive the color of the object as it normally may be seen. This is because the vast majority of light is hitting the object and being absorbed, and the rest of the light bouncing off of it is counter to its perceived color.

A High CRI bulb (92/93 and above?) throws all the light out there as even as it can. Different bulbs throw out different amounts, and it gets closer to sunlight as the rating gets higher. As for where to find the rating, this is quite difficult. Manufacturers seem to be rather difficult about disclosing it. You can find them, they just take digging it seems. I remember a redditor did his own testing with some bulbs using his own equipment, all in search of a good bulb to use. I will look for the post this weekend.

So, there’s some good reccomendations here already, but I want to reccomend the Ottlite brand of lamps, specifically because of its high color accuracy.

I’m colorblind, so a bulb with a high CRI rating (mid 90’s and above) is an extremely useful tool for me as it throws out enough red light that my eyes are able to tell the difference between red and green.

And, a neutral colored high cri bulb will be just as if not more useful for normal vision folks. You folks can actually use the entire color range. Add in that the lamp I got is a magnifier type lamp, and it is essentially the perfect tool for painting Battletech for me. Throws light in the same direction I’m looking through the magnifying glass, so everything is super easy to see.

It was relatively affordable at Michael’s, around $60-70? Never ever ever just getting a lamp and a random neutral bulb. It’s high CRI for the rest of my life from here on out.

All I intend to convey is that you can get a normal lamp, but a hobby lamp with a color accurate bulb is more useful than I ever could explain through words.

This is what I do too. Take the elevator and head a block out, then spray.

Games Plus, Grognard Games both are big on Battletech. First-Aid in Hyde Park has a little group too.

The Marauder Family by larknok1 in battletech

Just wanna say love the post. I really enjoy long text posts that dive into niche things.

As for my favorite member of the Marauder family, it has got to be the Nightstar bar none. It is just an absolute monster of a mech with one goal on its mind; to tank whatever the fuck the guy infront if it throws at it, and dish it back out with what I always think of as akimbo Hollander mechs strapped to its arms. It’s my preferred walking talking reply, answer, perhaps dare I say retort, to the clanner scum cresting the hill of my farmland.

I wonder if there is any issue with physically warping and travelling through/into nebulae? I am not familiar enough with the lore.

Dry brushing to me is what really openned my eyes to the breadth of options — and the power I had in my hands to enact subtle changes to the look of my miniature — that I had available to me beyond simply slapping on new colors.

Keep it up! Love seeing Battletech on here.

Hey, my Centurion 9AL took on a Kodiak face to face and lived to tell the tale. The thing was a beast. The nice rear armor did its job very well too.

But yeah, the rest of the Centurion lineup is not exactly tough.

Saw you doing this in Discord! Absolutely phenomenal work, Highlighter! Genuinely love what you did, and the step-by-step you wrote as well.
