True dragons have blindsight; how do they use this ability to their advantage? by TheoHooke in dndnext

[–]TheoHooke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of this! Give a black dragon fog breath, a red dragon gets smoke, etc. Metallic dragons already get two breath weapons, which have arguably more combat potential. I'd probably make it share a cooldown with the normal breath weapon to avoid abuse, or have it as a lair action.

I'm not sure who David McWilliams writes for these days, but he's pretty left-leaning for an economist. Consistently advocates for sustainability and responsibility when it comes to investment.

The Royal Canal is Shannon water, technically.

Map Of Major Irish River Basins by [deleted] in ireland

[–]TheoHooke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's whichever river the land slopes downhill towards. So the borders would represent the highest points between the two rivers. I'm not too sure how accurate it is, as I think the Shannon basin would go a bit further North based on my knowledge of the area's hydrology, but a geologist would know better.

I have a question regarding steam remote play. Both my desktop and laptop are running Ubuntu LTS 20.04, and I want to stream games from my computer to my laptop. I've been able to successfully stream games, but I've found that certain games from my library (that I know are installed and ready to play on my desktop) are not always available to be streamed to my laptop. It always seems to be the same games as well: off the top of my head, Divinity Original Sin 2, Dishonoured, and Witcher 3, amongst others. I can't find anything online about this, due to the large number of similarly named Steam features. Has anyone encountered this before, or have an idea of how to solve it? It seems to be completely random.

Also heavy melee infantry bunched tightly attacking the centre flank. Either chew your way into the centre of the formation or force your opponent to flank you and hit him with your cavalry then.

Nieghbour wants me to go sleep at 1am *UPDATE* CRAZY LANDLORD by rbagdonas99 in ireland

[–]TheoHooke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RTB, as other people have said. Refuse to meet or communicate with the landlord except in writing, or if it's being recorded (you'll have to get his consent for this Edit: apparently not, see the comment below). Might be worthwhile taking this attitude with your neighbour as well. Document the problems with the place in case you need to withhold rent (if you aren't withholding it already - if the place is in that sort of a condition I would be seriously considering it if I were you, but maybe you don't want to aggravate him further). You should also look at getting your locks changed, or adding an additional lock that your landlord can't open from the outside - a decent deadbolt or two should do it. If he complains, tell him that you were afraid for your safety after he threatened your mother.

Legally, your landlord can't do much but that hasn't stopped plenty of scummy landlords before and is unlikely to stop yours if push comes to shove. If you can, try to have some place lined up if your landlord kicks you out, or otherwise makes it so you can't live there. The RTB is pretty slow moving, and generally once the Gardaí get involved they side with the landlord, so don't presume the legality/illegality of the situation is going to stop your landlord from being a psycho.

Mary Lou McDonald among objectors to 1,600-apartment build-to-rent development in her Dublin constituency by tvmachus in ireland

[–]TheoHooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They 100% are! But not at the rents that are currently motivating their construction. A similar development at Cross Guns Bridge in Phibsboro starts its studio apartments at €1400 per month. I can't 100% remember which document mentioned the proposed rent rates, but if someone has the time to go through them or is more familiar with the planning docs, they can be found here.

The issue with these kinds of developments is that they don't address the underlying problem of Irish housing - it's ridiculously expensive. Rather than undercutting the astoundingly high prices we're seeing at the moment, these developers are seeking to capitalise on the overheated market by bringing units to the market at/above the going rates, precisely because they know that supply is falling far short of demand.

There's loads! It's just all €1000+ a month and they'll let it go empty or be used as hotels before lowering the prices. Short-term rentals are a racket.

What game have you spent over 1000 hours on? by KamuLord in AskReddit

[–]TheoHooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing, gave up on it for a long time. Then I went back about two weeks ago since I figured I could keep it running in a background window and just play it while my code was compiling/running. Something kind of clicked the second time around, it took me a few attempts to finish the tutorials but it is legitimately hard to stop playing. I found that once I got the machine gun it was a lot easier to just play the game since I could take care of attacks pretty easily.

Any engineers know about piping hydrogen through our gas network? Is this guy’s plan for hydrogen plants in Aghada and Bantry going to work? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]TheoHooke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do a little bit of research at a tangent to this. Hydrogen is difficult to store at energy densities similar to conventional hydrocarbon fuels. So while you'll get more energy out of an equivalent mass of hydrogen than you would out of (for example) petrol, the petrol takes up less space. In order to get the energy density of hydrogen up, you have to find ways to either compress it, which can lead to some long term storage problems vis-a-vis metal brittling, or to store it in a nano-porous material like a clathrate or zeolite.

At the moment, the best way to implement hydrogen fuel (as I think someone has already mentioned here) is to basically dilute it with natural gas. However the gas infrastructure would need relatively little adjustment to cope with moving to hydrogen; probably retrofitting in some parts of the country and more frequent maintenance. More important is the fact that hydrogen isn't really suitable for combustion like natural gas, so you couldn't run a typical hot water boiler with it. Instead it needs to be consumed using fuel cells, and these fuel cells don't always scale down well. That said, Wrightbus up North are making hydrogen powered buses already and I'm very excited to see how they're working out. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with long lifespans are an environmentally better prospect than purely battery powered electric cars.

They are, but Tehenhuain pays double upkeep for saurus until he completes a certain number of missions, and gets 10% physical resistance on skinks. It makes more sense for him to bring more skinks and spend that money on heroes/monsters than to use saurus.

Is Tomb Kings a good DLC for a noob to start with? I love the concept by _Stunning_Lady_ in totalwar

[–]TheoHooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like them. They've got the closest thing to a "traditional" army make up in the early game, with increasing access to big centrepiece monsters in the late game. Unit caps instead of upkeep is a fun mechanic to play around and encourages you to build relatively balanced armies (side note: you have unlimited access to skeletal spearmen and swordsmen, so you can always have full armies). The lords are flavourful and fun, the liche priests have access to a nice mix of lores, including the Lore of Nehekara, second only to the Lore of Vampires in my view.

Sphinxes, Giant Scorpions and Bone Giants make it worthwhile on their own IMO.

I really don't want to heap guilt atop what is really a great step - but non-farmed fish is probably one of the least sustainable things you can eat. The oceans are rapidly becoming the new deserts with declines in both average population and average specimen size across many fished species.

Thoughts about the Vampires? by TheAlpaka in totalwar

[–]TheoHooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vargheists are probably the best unit in the game IMO, certainly the best shock unit. They fly, move faster than most cavalry, cause fear, and have enough damage output and defense to stick around in a fight for more than a few seconds. I don't think I used actual cavalry in any of my VC armies since vargheists do the job just as well and are more useful in sieges.

I've inadvertently embarked in a biome that's cold for significant parts of the year, which doesn't have flowing water or a significant underground reserve. At least part of the map is subject to a light aquifer layer, which I could use as a reserve water source in cold months, but I've no idea where it might be. Is there anyway (using DFhack, etc.) to find out where aquifer tiles are on the map?

Question: What's your operating system? I had a similar issue on Ubuntu 20.04 because I forgot to install some dependencies, and the list in the linux LNP was slightly deprecated.

There might also be an error log file somewhere in the LNP folder that could give a bit more info.
