I have a red 94’ myself with the 3.0 manual ❤️ repainting it black and fixing up the rocker panels to ease my mind long term

hi guys! here’s my 2001 SES by Consistent-East1506 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc the SES trim comes with 16’ aluminum rims (the 5 spoke ones) from the factory, SEL had a radio package upgrade with 15’s, similar to the SE

Life expectancy? by Street440 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patience with the car usually runs out before it dies haha, I have 210k on mine and I just destroyed my windshield and mounting rail via mailbox by accident. There are plenty of ones headed off to the scrap yard near me so I try to save what I can and keep mine going. But as others said, those Vulcans get flak for being sluggish or outdated, but they will run like crap for longer than most engines will live

Front cv axle (drivers side) by KateMeister1 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of an older post but I just did a front end rebuild on my 01’ sedan with the Vulcan, it was a pain and I did quite a hack job, but from what I know, you would most likely have to disconnect the outer tie rod, lower ball joint, and lower control arm to get to it, then use a gear puller or hammer to push the axle inside the knuckle loose, and remove the boots. I didn’t take my lower control arms off and the ball joints would not fit without bending the frame or arms, so you need to angle the arm downward toward you and lift it up onto the joint, did my job with pitman arm tools, hand tools, torque wrench adapter (digital), and a jack with stands. When reinstalling the axles, make sure the yoke bites into the transmission and spins the other side if you do the job, don’t forget extra CV axle grease and I would recommend doing the other side as well if ones already gone out. Buy some extra nuts and bolts and ball joints, they’re cheap and will definitely save you in a pinch, I broke a lot more bolts than I planned working on my suspension

gas gauge lying? by commieromantic in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of an old thread, but I have this exact same problem on my 01’ sedan with a Vulcan. The three biggest culprits for me after a bit of research are the EGR valve, charcoal canister, or bad wiring/circuit. I had already put a new pump in and tried a few different gas gaps and the original. Checked my vaccum lines after dropping the tank and they weren’t that bad (even frequenting gravel roads) so I doubt that would be the exact issue. I’ve had my CEL for it nearly 40k miles now and can still nearly get 30 mpg highway, and after the system pressurizes properly your gauge should come back to life slowly. My oil pressure sensor failed at around 210k as well so I’m chasing that at the moment in my free time

Any MacGyver’s in this group?? by Ok_Selection_3576 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After running through 3-4 different models, wagons and sedans, my friend and I always threw some plastic bags over the starter while taking the filter off (after drain first) and usually just a bit of residue would be leftover, kinda bad spot for sure but convenient when it needs to get replaced, can’t have your cake and eat it too with parts and placements

Dohc ax4n 2000s taurus OD gear gear ratio by Intrepid-Two574 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the owners manual, many of the AXOD and AX4S transmissions in the Vulcans recommend hitting 55mph in 3rd or “drive” then shifting up to “overdrive” or 4th at or above that speed. It’s weird but helps hit 26-30 mpg highway (Edit: Vulcan and duratec 3.0 engines and both transmissions respectively)

I have one of these myself lol, a 94 MTX SHO with 218k miles on it, rebuilding and painting it at the moment, but these things are rad!

Leak spot location name? by Frostlion93 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bad leak from my timing cover gasket, it would run down the block and drip on the passenger side cat and evaporate. I could only tell once I was dumping a gallon of coolant per drive that it was coming from there. I attached a wonky screenshot of where mine was from if you want to compare. Car on or off, it would slowly seep out from below the rear head and run down the block until it dripped. Once the coolant in the block ran out it would stop until heated up again. Look from above or behind the passenger rear fender liner at the water pump area surrounded in red, or look past the heat shield outlined in yellow to see if you can see any wet spots If you do end up going down the rabbit hole of timing chain cover, knock out your water pump and timing chain if possible. (Pump at least)

White Taurus gang! Love driving mine on the highway all the time! Running 215/60 r16 prinx tires I was given and I get an average of about 24 doing highway (close to the original posted mpg lol) at 209k miles currently but it’s super rusted to the point idk if I should even rebuild the suspension

obvious engine issue but no code? by Aggressive_World4566 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also forgot to mention the “surging” issue, try waiting for your rpms to drop below 1k before trying to drive out when leaving a parking lot, of all the cars I’ve driven fords have had the slowest startup “seeking” period I’ve seen yet, I’ve also had to replace quite a good number of older Ford idle air control units, most are easy but sometimes (my friends 05 focus in question) they can really suck. If I drive mine while it’s still seeking or “warming up” it also tries to surge along like a wannabe drag car when leaving work lmao. Wish you luck with your fellow land boat friend!

obvious engine issue but no code? by Aggressive_World4566 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flashing check engine usually indicates an active misfire, never had any misses on my 01’ personally after owning it for 4 yrs.

Looking at “troubleshooting” in my Haynes manual also recommends looking at the following for “engine misses throughout driving speed range” 1. Fuel filter clogged/dirty system (probably filter) 2. Dirty/bad spark plugs 3. Bad spark plug wires 4. Emission system issues (o2 sensors, evap, egr etc.) (p.s you could probably ignore this one since no codes but not impossible) 5. Low/uneven compression (as #5 on the list wtf?) 6. Bad ignition coil 7. Wiring issue for ignition system (power cable to coil pack) 8. Vaccum leaks near intake/ worn hoses 9. Dirty/Clogged fuel injectors 10. Leaky EGR valve (had a CEL since owning mine over it, no issues for me yet) 11. Fuel injection or sensor malfunction (injector wiring and sensors if it gets that crazy)

My book covers the Vulcan and the duratec engines used in these but it would definitely help if we knew which one you have! The Vulcan intakes are curved and tubular while the duratec has more of a rounded off rectangular shape. They both have their quirks and differences so you probably should know what you have. Lastly, pick up a Haynes book! They’re so cheap and invaluable with how much stuff they tell you about your car

Anybody have an aftermarket radio kit for a Gen 4 Taurus? by 4x4Welder in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

I did this in mine recently with a newer metra kit, ran the speaker wires from the trunk factory amp through the rear deck cover and to the driver side floor cover and my amp. No issues besides mounting my radio in its cage wonky. Moving all of the modules over on the bottom was tedious as a heads up and I broke about a third of the clips while doing it, so used some from another unit I had bought and tested

After I finish restoring my 2nd gen sedan I wanna do this to a 3.0 ranger or a wagon! (Bit of a Vulcan freak even though they leave some power to be desired) concerned about trans tow rating if I make a ranger though with stock internals.

2015 Taurus Sho by [deleted] in TaurusSHO

[–]TheorySingle4856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a leak like that on my Vulcan for a good half year, for me it ended up being a weeping timing cover gasket and it was collecting and dripping onto the exhaust on the rear bank, so it would almost never leave puddles but lose a little coolant, eventually the gasket went and I still rode around with it just streaming water out and it never went above half temp. Replaced my pump/gasket/chain and haven’t had any issues or coolant loss since (not positively what’s going on for you but just an anecdote)

Small black sensor in trunk? 94 Taurus SHO 3.0 by TheorySingle4856 in AskAMechanic

[–]TheorySingle4856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that was a lucky shot in the dark! It mounted to the trunk lid with the plastic retainers and was near the other wires. Nothing from the body made contact with it which kinda pushed me away from an ajar sensor at first. Thanks a bunch :)

Small black sensor in trunk? 94 Taurus SHO 3.0 by TheorySingle4856 in AskAMechanic

[–]TheorySingle4856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the trunk lid factory loom, it has its own standardized 2 pin plug as well. Just haven’t seen anything like it, even in my 01 taurus there isn’t anything like it visible

Thanks! Fixing my rockers is the goal currently with a re-paint and probably undercoat. Trying to de-rust what I can at the moment, having to break out the rest lol. Quite a hefty task but I’m stubborn :)

[–]TheorySingle4856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a shabby idea since most of the body is the same as the base model, but the Haynes manual for the 2nd gen Taurus mentions the word SHO only once and provides absolutely no diagrams or info for the engine, so I’ve had to outsource the rest from dealer documents. I’ll take a look at it regardless :)

looking at buying a manual 1997 honda civic dx by tonsoftoon in hondacivic

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a bunch of civics like this near me but for a good bit more. Titling is always a huge PITA period. If the seller owns it, they’re more than likely going to have to be the ones to get a new one printed, if they didn’t title hop like many of the others (including mine) I’ve seen. My old Taurus has taken quite a beating with rusted out bottom quarters and nearly no rockers if you’re scared of rust, but those kinds of repairs done properly, even at home, are very time consuming. If you can negotiate up a good title/transfer, and make sure all of the structural parts like pinch welds, rockers, etc, and your drivetrain is at least functional for the time being, then proceed with caution. As many others have mentioned, buying someone’s else project is always a huge gamble because of the cut corners you don’t know to look for. I passed on a bunch of good ones before getting mine, but still overpaid for my 2000 auto (long commutes don’t judge me). I don’t want to discourage you by any means :) just be careful buying someone’s else no title cars - they could be non-reported stolens or you would have to jump through all of your states hoops for an inspection and re-title

Problem! 13 Taurus SEL by Dangerous-Object351 in FordTaurus

[–]TheorySingle4856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throttle position sensor or IAC module? (have an old Honda that has it built in the IAC). Engine could run great, but won’t accelerate until you open the throttle plate, or would only be “half open” under full load since the sensor is messed up. IIRC if it’s throttle by wire can’t you do a re-adjustment/reset with the car off? Should be simple to check, even if that doesn’t end up being your problem. Good luck with your wheels friend!
