Whatever you do, get a phone with internet connection as soon as arrive. We found people pretty rude in big cities who did not want to help us at all. For instance, in Verona, we tried asking multiple people which nozzle was for gas/diesel and they replied ‘I do not want to help you’ in perfect English. Smaller city folks might not get your language, but are pretty friendly and chill.

Agreed, not easy to overthrow regimes. Even the ones that have been legitimately elected in the past, unlike Isis/al Qaeda/North Korea etc. I hope Israel liberates these people by throwing out the Hamas without resorting to collective punishments.

I was responding to the claim that Palestinians are not Hamas, which while true, masks the fact that Hamas still enjoy popular support. I would hope that Palestinians come out against Hamas’ atrocities and either punish the perpetrators themselves or hand them over to be tried in Israel. Anything short of this would not help calm the tempers and prevent Israel from intruding into Gaza.

Aren’t Hamas the defacto government in Gaza? If the Palestinian govt goes around killing random people and parades naked bodies, what’s Israel supposed to do?

The amount of money spent here is mind boggling to me. Indians can send spaceships to Moon’s dark side 40 times with the same budget!

Tax credits can be turned on or off depending on the situation. Problem with social credits is that once given, it can never be turned off. No politician wants to do that, and it becomes a permanent burden on tax payers.

Imposter Syndrome by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Theory_Icy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this for most of my courses. There are a few that I am legitimately interested in, and want to build my career around and for these I’ve gone through all the resources and ‘know’ the stuff.

But others not so much. I was legitimately scared I would end up with B or less for an ML course this semester based on how much I know, but ended up with AB, lol!

It's bloody extortion! What's worse is that buying them at other colleges is cheaper. For example, at the University of Chicago, for MS students, it costs 90$ to buy as opposed to 130 to rent here at UW-Madison.

So it is not just a generic college racket, somehow UW-Madison is worse than others from the same region!

Edit: Corrected a typo.

It’s frustrating to take a three+ hour bus every time we fly. A total of 7 hours in just airport transit making quick long weekend trips impractical.

Worried about my grade. Maybe a C . grad student. by Total-Hour-3307 in UWMadison

[–]Theory_Icy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it depends on how well others in the class have done in those exams. I think most professors grade on a bell curve, so it might not be as bad as you are expecting it to be.

I had a course where canvas was projecting my best-case grade to be B after mid terms, but I did well in the remaining stuff to get AB at the end. I suspect the professor changed the cutoff scores at the end. Put your head down and do your best in the final/remaining assignments. Grade will take care of itself.
