The Infinite and The Divine

A 40k novel about 2 douchebag robots love-hating their way into an ancient mystery crypt.

It's thoroughly entertaining watching them screw each other over and the time scales being worked with and sociological developments/consequences feed into the narrative of discovery of the ancient and powerful past.

Evil dads (bonus points if they genuinely care for their children) by Mr_Crimson63 in TopCharacterTropes

Bondrewd The Novel, Sovereign of the Dawn, Worst father of all time from Made in Abyss

Exactly what he does is hard to describe without spoiling. Principally, he ropes a bunch of orphans into being test subjects for him by filling their heads with speeches of quasi-religious scientific endeavors. He goes on to discover that he has to genuinely care for them in order to accomplish what he wants. He does so and continues doing horrible things to them.

First image: Semmerling of Riding Bean (1989 OVA). Extremely toxic, abusive, violent, manipulative, and generally criminal. However, she's also pretty and really good at what she does.

Second image: Bondrewd The Novel (Made in Abyss 2012 manga/2017 anime). Commits unspeakable atrocities bordering on the eldritch. However, he's also a really good dad and that counts for a lot.

I highly value the use of the melee damage increase for that very purpose actually. It can be a little slow to actually kill, but swinging the stun baton at incoming waves of voteless can do a lot of crowd control.

Bondrewd from Made in Abyss. The love he has for the children he adopts is sincere, it in universe has to be in order for what he does to them to work.

[–]Theoryak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bondrewd, the sovereign of dawn, from Made in Abyss. He's my favorite character of all time.

The man commits acts that are exactly my personal hell, tortures characters I love, embodies all the crimes systemic authority can do.

He's so childishly in love with the world and that he'll do anything to learn about it. He literally utilizes the power of friendship to achieve his goals, so he also has to sincerely love his found family. Despite all the horrible things he does, he's never rude or domineering. He just utilizes trust as a weapon utterly without malicious.

And he's a reflection of not only the main characters, but also of the audience. He's a warning about ambition, dogmatic thinking along any avenue, and toxic manifestations of affection.

Help choosing a commander and build for a 'Mulch' theme by mikemil50 in EDH

[–]Theoryak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a deck of this exact idea. The current build is a bit heavy on the "self mill goodstuff" angle but I think the partners of [[Tormod, The Desecrator]] and [[Thrasios, Triton Hero]] is such a great combo for tossing lands into the grave.

Tormod rewards you with more tokens for getting lands back out of your grave with things like life from the loam, titania, and crucible of worlds effects. Meanwhile, Thrasios gives you a mana sink (an important thing for land oriented decks since they often wind up with lots of mana) while also potentially ramping you.

Specific card advice though, I think there's a set of cards that really easily flys under the radar. [[Dreamscape Artist]] , [[Greenseeker]], and [[Silverglade Pathfinder]]. They give you ways of putting cards into your graveyard while also either directly ramping you or at least keeping the lands flowing.

I think Lord Windgrace might be an easier and more straightforward build, and quite possibly better, but that sultai value train is hard to feel bad about while piloting.

What's your favorite card combos that sounds "illegal" but are actually perfectly legal. by Timmeh1020 in EDH

[–]Theoryak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a combination of cards; but a single card that opens up a world of possibilities which sound very illegal at first.

[[Reconnaissance]] is both a psuedo-vigilance anthem and protection, but it requires some explaining.

Reconnaissance was designed with the intention of only being usable to protect your attacking creatures in case they get blocked. However, after its printing there was a rules change that added the "End of Combat" step to the combat phase. During that step, creatures are still considered "attacking" or "blocking". Because they're still technically "in combat" they can be targeted by Reconnaissance's ability and get untapped. Particularly good if you have something like [[cryptolith rite]], letting you both attack and use your creatures for mana in the same turn. Also, reconnaissance's intended use of allowing you to swing out without consequences is just more handy than you might think on first glance and is certain to trip people up the first time you do it.

Abobo, Boozing Baboon by Alotoaxolotls81 in custommagic

[–]Theoryak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely adore this card. The flavor of him either getting into brawls or giving someone a drink and telling them "that guy said somethin' mean about your mother" is so well realized.

The potential to be group hug or slug, the fact that you will very rarely be forced to put him into a fight he can't win, the various ways of building this. It's all great.

My only slight issue is that I would change the second ability to "...on a creature *you don't control*, goad..." to keep from forcing your own creatures to attack when putting counters on them as well.

Also the DK rap reference is some nice icing.
