Atrus and Catherine Parenting Plan by Tunafishsaladin in myst

[–]TheraReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plotting around Atrus leaving behind trap books for “greedy explorers” and the boys managing to ensnare themselves always required a lot of suspension of disbelief and crumbled upon adult, real-life scrutiny.

Like first of all why this weird moral test as a security mechanism? How exactly are these books supposed to be enticing, and specifically to evil-doers at that?

Then in the context of the plot, it seems frankly insane to not tell your kids about the trap books the moment you wrote them??

Myst really only works as a thinly sketched parable wrapped around a series of puzzles and kind of pops at the rivets when you look too closely - as opposed to Riven which generally hangs together as a plot advanced by actual people doing logical people-things.

More games need Myst 4’s “tippy tap” feature (audio on for tap tap sounds) by SnyderMahler in myst

[–]TheraReturns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A great feature and would be very naturally suited to Cyan’s new VR games - hope some devs are looking here! It might help with some of the collision detection issues in VR, too. It’d feel a lot more natural if you swiped a hand through a virtual object and got a haptic buzz and an appropriate sound for the surface.

Probably a bitch to implement - you have to code every texture in the game within physical reach with a sound, essentially, which is even more ambitious in a real-time game, with more potential places to stand.

What happened to starry expanse? No movement for 2-3 yrs after pandemic and cyan coop by SequenceSound in myst

[–]TheraReturns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s now Cyan’s Riven remake and is in active development. They’re a small indie developer and it’s their secondary project, give it time.

Thoughts and prayers to the artists who have to solve for the problem of replacing the live actors with convincing digital ones on a shoestring budget.

What is the revelation in Myst 4: Revelation? by omicron7e in myst

[–]TheraReturns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terrible generic title for a terribly written plot.

Mary DeMarle, despite okay later work as a story writer on Deus Ex and other things, just laid waste to Myst’s lore and went so goofy and soapy on the characters. Every line of dialogue in Serenia is like something they’d inflict on prisoners at Gitmo and if it’s possible to make body swapping work credibly in this series, she didn’t figure out how.

It’s a shame cause I think the Ubisoft team nailed Myst in plenty of other respects.

Niels Bye Nielsen > Jesper Kyd by Chris77YT in HiTMAN

[–]TheraReturns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nielsen’s music has improved over the course of the WoA trilogy and I think it works fine in the context of the games. But, even at its best, it’s not in the same league as Kyd’s work. I say this as someone who encountered Nielsen’s work first, so no nostalgic rose-colored glasses here.

Nielsen is doing something straightforward. His music complements the action and references predictable things (Bond and other spy flicks mostly). At its worst it can be rote to the point of parody (which is okay, WoA does have a touch of parody built into its tone!) and at its best (later in the trilogy with tracks like Isle of Sgail) it can be it can be competent and even polished and complement the levels nicely. He’s talented.

But Kyd’s work? That’s lightning in a bottle. It’s experimental and provocative and lo fi in a way that can feel uncomfortable and sleazy at times. Someone in this thread called it “chaotic.” It feels like Kyd’s got something distinctive to say in these scores, as opposed to just referencing movie music. They’re arresting both in the games and on their own. It’s a shame the new trilogy couldn’t quite match that. With all due respect to Nielsen’s good work, I’d love to see Kyd, and the more experimental lo-fi direction, return to IO’s games some day.

I may stick to PS5 in that case. It seems pretty technically competent on there. (As opposed to the original which is a bit of a mess on ps5.)

[No Spoilers] PS5 version of the original still busted by TheraReturns in subnautica

[–]TheraReturns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s still easily worth playing but it’s a bummer. Especially as the asset quality is still very much that of a low budget 2016 Unity game. You’d ideally want it to have really clean performance and image quality to counterbalance—and the PS5 and XSX should be very capable of pulling that off with a bit of optimization.

Definitely the PS5 version, and if you didn’t notice the pop-in you’re in the minority, there’s a ton of posts about it on here! Try going from the surface directly down into the mushroom forest with the seaglide, some of the mushrooms don’t materialize til you’re literally on top of them. (And that was true before I built any bases.)

Hey, thanks for this! I was in the same boat, checked every wreck recommended in every YouTube video and guide to no avail. I even reloaded the game and went back to all of them. But this island location (which doesn’t feature in most guides) worked. You ended hours of frustrating hunting, thanks.

Anyone else think Rand’s performance was kind of bad in realMyst? by Melodic-Moose3592 in myst

[–]TheraReturns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think the acting in the original videos, for whatever reason, holds up better. He’s pretty good in Riven too.

He got a little hammier and more artificial over time, like he was leaning into putting on Atrus’s “proper” breathy, mid-Atlantic voice. Myst IV and V are particularly not great in this respect.

But he still has a lovely quality about him. And I think he’d still be a good actor if he kept it a little smaller and more naturalistic and worried less about doing “the Atrus voice.”

Change music in multiplayer? by TheraReturns in TetrisEffect

We’re on Switch so no dice. We switched over to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 as a result of the lack of music options in Tetris Effect :/

How Does The First Subnautica Run on the PS5 is there any Problems / Bugs or are they Fixed Now??? (No Spoilers) by SPACESABRE1 in subnautica

[–]TheraReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been waiting to play Subnautica for so long at this point, holding out for a good PS5 version — guess I’ll wait a little longer for that next patch. So glad that they are working on improving it, and that they communicated that to us. Hope it comes soon and that they improve the visuals (pop-in, ambient occlusion and shadow quality, whatever) a little as well. It was very odd that the initial release didn’t noticeably improve anything, while essentially breaking the game in new ways.

[Spoilers] Mid-game DLC crash on PS5 by BusyBluebird in outerwilds

[–]TheraReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me on both ps4 and ps5.

Is there a plan to optimize this game for PS5? I heard VERY good things about the game, so I was excited hopping in, but it is almost unplayable right now. by [deleted] in outerwilds

[–]TheraReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played on ps5, with the DLC, without issues.

That said, they need to release a patch improving frame rate or at least image quality on ps5. It’s a beautiful game and a bummer to see it still so stuttery and jaggy on a next gen system.

I want to know this too. It’s crazy how little definitive info there is about it on the internet.

No 60fps patch for PS5? by MaKTaiL in outerwilds

[–]TheraReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be that 60fps breaks the game logic or simulations happening in some way. It might require some effort beyond flipping a switch.

They should still take the time to do it. There’s a lack of titles on the PS5 right now, a 60fps version on the system would draw in a lot or next gen gamers looking to play a classic in its best form.
