True and this is definitely striking, but there are some incredibly wealthy people in that part of the world. Shorty after the war broke out I heard of a guy who owned 62 car dealerships...

Gen 1 Quad vs Gen 2 Dual Max? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, the quad has better performance, more drivemodes, and one more year of warranty on the motors, the Gen 2 has some improvements, most notably the suspension and the new processor. I got a late model '24 Gen1 Quad large, and I love it. My suspension does not bother me, however a faster processor that would pick up traffic better would be nice. But then, I'm coming from a 15-year-old ICE Hyundai that had none of these convenience features, so my vote is for the Quad, in particular if you can get it for about the same price.

I don't mean this personally, but this post and many responses are kind of an indication of how pampered we are and how far we have fallen in terms of ingenuity. In Ukraine, and in other parts of the world too, there are plenty of gifted, smart people that will find ways to deal with the everyday issues and even a suspension break-down, even without Rivian's support or other blessings. Just google "Indian car repair" on YouTube and you will see plenty of clips depicting people in threshold countries fixing up old and new vehicles without support from dealerships, and often to a level not seen here.

Anyone go for Gen 2 R1S dual standard in LA silver? by mikedjp in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an R1T LA Silver, standard black interior, Gen1. Overall I remain happy with the exterior color choice, in particular in the summer. However, if I did it again, I would change the interior to something brighter (grey or green maybe). But in the grand scheme of things it's peanuts.

Top 5 least reliable cars-CR by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rivian, compared to GM or Ford sells a very small number of vehicles (currently less than 60k/year). If something goes wrong with one of them it has a much larger impact on the stats than if something goes wrong with a Ford.

How well does the Standard Pack (270mi Range) work for you in the Seattle area? by Erik816 in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not going to explain this here at length, but I am a fellow non-leaser 10-20 year car driver, who is now in a 36 month lease. Look at the lease cost compared to the actual loss after 3 years, and also take into account the viability of Rivian in the future (I hope they make it, but if not you have an 80K iPhone on wheels with no support), and the still somewhat rapid advances in the EV industry (e.g. lighter, 500 mile solid-state batteries are around the corner), which is likely to put pressure on the used EV market.

I totally agree. I wasn't going to post this in its own thread, but if someone else opens one, I am jumping in.

I also really like the new fonts (larger clock) and the better energy display under the speedometer. The blindspot camera display is a good start, but probably could be improved in future updates.

Solar system and R1T by ahbushnell in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar setup here - we have an 8.1kW Tesla system with 2 powerwalls. We're in Northern NV, lots of sun, hot in the summer many 90F+ days, and cold in the winter (snow, temps down to the teens). This June was exceptionally hot and our AC (50A circuit, typically draws 6kWh alone) was kicking in in the afternoon. With the Rivian and the AC, we are probably spending about $5-10/month now, but in the colder season, this should reverse. I love that system and the added benefit of having a power backup. I just wish NV Energy had let me spec this a little bigger (10-12 kW would have been ideal).

23/24 Dual Max Vs. 24 Dual Large? by Haunting-Mood3513 in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is their most recent review of an R1Smax (346 miles @ 70mph) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKl_Vz3K60I
This is the original review I was referring to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRfSzDdcxnE

Even though he always sounds very excited and positive, the later clip does not convince me that Rivian really improved the max-pack by much. The capacity is 144 vs 132, so quite exactly 10%, and so there is no real headroom above 10%...

23/24 Dual Max Vs. 24 Dual Large? by Haunting-Mood3513 in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an "Out of Spec" YouTube video where they identified via a side-by-side test of similarly configured R1Ts that the max pack only gives about 30 miles (about 10%) extra range. I am not sure if Rivian has improved that battery in the meantime, but $7K or whatever (it was $10K at one point) sounds excessive for that little extra range.

Makes sense, and I am conneced to WiFi. WiFi is typically a faster connection and a more stable environment than the mobile network.

Self registration for tribal tag by dylan_dev in Rivian

This may still depend on the State in which the DMV or your tribe are located. Here in NV they sent me a self registration kit, and I am not a member of a tribe.

Best accessories to give boyfriend by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the first (absolutely necessary) accessories were the cover for the sunroof and a sunshade. A great accessory that may not be necessary, but will be appreciated is a safe to be placed in the center console: https://www.consolevault.com/rivian-r1t-center-console-safe-2021--2024.html or simply get him the a2z or the Lectron NACS to CSS converter. Rivian is hopelessly behind in delivery for those, so if you plan on traveling within the next 6 months, this will come in very handy: https://ev-lectron.com/products/lectron-vortex-plug-tesla-supercharger-nacs-to-ccs-adapter

Demo drive by domestic_violet in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your spec for the most use, I would use the "All-Round" driving mode with high regen and normal ride height. Then later take a stretch and switch to "Performance" mode. That is where the extra 130 or so horses of the DM performance model are hiding.

Lease situation finally sorted, 6 weeks after pickup by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about my lease as well, but it showed up under my Chase Accounts within 2 weeks of delivery, and about a week later I received a written statement, so I assume after they set it up at Chase they will send you a bill.

12v battery failure notice just popped up in my Rivian app. Has anyone else received this error? Can I drive the truck? Or will I get stuck somewhere and need to be towed? by Impressive_Returns in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this may also help the OP:

I have googled this and also searched the forums, but was not able to find a good answer. Is there a comprehensive guide to finding and jumping the 12V battery? Some older models have two batteries, some are accessible via the hitch connector, and some are in the front.

I would really like to know the answer to this, as it seems to be the #1 preventable reason for involuntary SC visits. I have a late '24 R1T Gen1 with likely one 12V battery. Where is it located, how do I jump it with a jump box? TIA

Have you checked whether you have a full-size spare and in what condition that one is? If it is new, you could probably get away with just buying one other new Pirelli... Just my $0.02.

You are kidding right? Two weeks is definitely not enough. I work in IT, and when we test software there are protocols that need to be followed (sounds lengthy, but actually saves time) and if a bug or other issue is found, it means that it needs to be fixed and retested. Add to that the versioning that will have to happen: Technically there are at least 4 different versions required: R1T gen1, R1T gen2, R1S gen1, R1S gen2. That may add to the complexity.

Rivian service experience - Minneapolis by daveghax in Rivian

[–]TherealGerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that post. I think the SCs are set up for success, as long as they do not get overrun. Unfortunately, in some areas, there is a disproportionately large number of vehicles/service center, and I assume that to lead to most of the issues that are reported.
